Historical Camouflages - USA and France

Commanders!

Today, we’d like to tell you more about two camouflages that will become available for free in July.

The first one is a brand-new American camouflage called TALON.

A little bit of history first. As you already know, the U.S. Army used a pattern series called MERDC up until the mid-1980s. By 1984, the MERDC set was replaced by a unified NATO camouflage, which was used by the Germans, the French and other members of the NATO. This camo pattern is also referred to as CARC (Chemical Agent Resistant Coating) and consists of brown, green and black stripes. We have it in the game as well by the way, in two variants – French and German (the French used somewhat lighter brown on some occasions).

This is, for all intents and purposes, the NATO camouflage that is used to this day. It was also adopted by newer NATO members such as Poland and the Czech Republic and is easily convertible into a winter pattern by painting wide white stripes over it using a washable paint. Naturally, since the early 2000s (and especially the Iraq war), the need to camouflage vehicles for European conditions was overshadowed by multiple desert environment conflicts, so the American vehicles we typically see these days use a single CARC color called Desert Tan (this is an older color that was used during the Desert Storm operation) a later CARC color called Middle Stone (or Sand), which was in wide use during the Iraq War.

However, with the end of the War on Terror and the American re-focus towards more conventional battlefields (including the European theater of war), the colors green and brown came, once again, into fashion.

Enter the TALON. This new camouflage is essentially similar to the NATO pattern, but, in its forest configuration, has one extra color (lighter green). The pattern itself isn’t really revolutionary though. The real trick behind the TALON coating is that:
 • It’s 75 percent cheaper per gallon than its predecessor
 • Does not contain potentially harmful substances
 • It can therefore be applied even in ad hoc conditions

The TALON camouflage is a part of the Ground Vehicle Coating System program from 2018 to develop a new generation of military coatings (not just for armor) and was first reported on around March 2019 with the initial testing taking place in Florida. Some sources also claim it helps mask the IR signature of a ground vehicle. It was shown on various Abrams tanks (including the M1A2C model, presented to Donald Trump in the Abrams Lima factory) and on the Bradley Fighting Vehicle. The plans are to start converting existing vehicles (especially the Abrams tanks and Strykers) to the TALON pattern and have the first fully converted units available by 2021.

The second camouflage is also relatively-new. It doesn’t have an official name, but we call it Scorpion.

It started appearing on various vehicles of the French Scorpion program, most notably the Leclerc Rénové MBT (also known as Leclerc XLR). The camouflage was actually named Scorpion by a journalist writing about the Leclerc T4 prototype, so the designation is likely not official.

This pattern consists of sharp-edged dark green and light green shapes on light brown background. There were several iterations with an early one appearing in 2015 or so on the leaked Leclerc T4 photos.

With that being said, the history of the pattern is unclear as it seems to be still somewhat experimental. The early pattern was rather simple with the later images showing the distinctive shapes that we tried to emulate, but more variants appeared on multiple vehicles shown to public.

In October 2019, a plan was unveiled to start using this type of camouflage to re-paint over 10 thousand French combat vehicles, following the 33-year use of the standard NATO camouflage. According to some French army officials, this camouflage creates a 3D illusion that makes even a tank very hard to spot at 1000 meters or longer and the AI shape recognition time (an ever more important element of modern fire control systems) increased from roughly 8 seconds to more than a minute. Desert variants were allegedly developed as well, although these have not been unveiled to this day.

It’s worth noting that due to the technical limitations of the Armored Warfare camouflage system, we weren’t able to replicate this pattern perfectly and it looks a bit different from the more recent versions. Simply take “our” Scorpion pattern as one of its iterations.

These camouflages will be usable on all vehicles and for all environments. We do hope you’ll enjoy them and, as always:

See you on the battlefield

Historical Skins – Leclerc Glorieux

Commanders!

For the upcoming French Bastille Day holiday, we’re working on another special historical skin called Glorieux.

Unlike the Warhammer, this skin, made for the Leclerc Tier 9 MBT, does refer to one particular vehicle.

The Glorieux (Glorious) was a Tranche 5 Leclerc of the first Series (vehicle number 6974-0036), produced in 1996 and assigned to the 2nd Escadron (Squadron) of the 501e-503e Régiment de chars de combat (501st-503rd Combat Tank Regiment), where it used as a command vehicle under Lieutenant Frédéric Fabre. The tank was deployed to Kosovo during Operation Trident in 1999, where it served with the Kosovo Peacekeeping Force (KFOR). The French were withdrawn from Kosovo in 2002 and the 501st-503rd Combat Tank Regiment, established in 1994, was disbanded in 2009 even though the 501st CTR (to which the Glorieux belonged) still exists.

What makes this tank really interesting is its fairly unique camouflage. French vehicles are rarely individualized, but this tank’s original NATO pattern camouflage (also available in Armored Warfare) was, for the winter of 1999, covered with commercial-grade white paint to better blend in during snowy winters.

Other than that, the tank bears the following markings:
 • KFOR indentification
 • Squad leader chevron
 • French flag
 • The name Glorieux written on the side of its turret, as is common for the French
 • Vehicle weight limit on the lower front plate
 • Vehicle number and unit designation on the lower front plate and in the back

Even though the original French Glorieux wasn’t an AZUR Leclerc, this skin will be available for all Leclerc’s configurations, including the AZUR armor upgrade.

We hope that you will enjoy this skin as much as we enjoyed creating it for you and, as always:

See you on the battlefield!

Preview: Update 0.33

Commanders!

With the Enigma’s Legacy Battle Path in full swing, it’s time to look to the next, final part of the Spirithaven season, which is coming in the form of Update 0.33.

This update will arrive in early September and will bring a large number of rebalances and changes to the core game. Much like Update 0.32, only a portion of its features will be initially available with more content added in smaller batches during the course of the months following its initial launch.

On the bright side, there’s a lot to look forward to. Here’s a taste what’s coming in Update 0.33:
Tier 7-10 Rebalance
The biggest feature of this update is a major rebalance program of pretty much all the Tier 7 to Tier 10 vehicles, their characteristics and armor in order to make high-Tier gameplay as smooth and fun as possible. We are aware of many of the issues that are plaguing high Tiers right now, as well as of the power creep problem that, well, crept itself into the game. This set of changes is meant to address all these concerns and should make the affected battles much more fun.

There’s a lot to it – too much to cover here; armor and penetration adjustments, shell changes, damage per minute changes, camouflage values changes, reload mechanics improvements and so on. We’ll be telling you more about this feature in an upcoming In Development article.
Mobility Overhaul
We’ll be improving the core mechanics of movement controls and their interaction with the ground. Vehicles will drive much better and more natural, wheeled vehicles will feel more responsive. This is another absolutely huge feature that deserves its own In Development article, even though many of these changes involve backend mechanics and equations and as such are quite hard to describe. You’ll have to try it for yourselves during the PTS phase of this update!
Visual Model Fixing
As you can see, Update 0.33 is all about major fixes and addressing the issues that you’ve submitted your feedback about. One of the issues is the (un)realistic appearance of several models. We’ll be fixing those, starting with the Abrams line of tanks and the long-awaited new T-72B model that’s also coming.

Note the added CITV optics to this M1A2 model:

The full list of changes will be unveiled later on.
New PvP Map Al Dabbah
After the launch of the initial update, we’ll be adding a new, large desert map to the game, called Al Dabbah. It’s map based on a Nile area in southern Sudan with rolling dunes of sand surrounding a lone massive solar power plant.

This map will be fairly open, even though the central area with the massive power plant poised to provide plenty of cover. However, players will also be able to snipe each other at longer distances.
Other Changes
The features above are, of course, only a small part of what's in store for you. We'll also have:
 • New Contract Mission reward vehicle, the Belarusian 2T Stalker Premium Tier 9 AFV
 • Two new Premium vehicles, the BVP M-80A and one more we’ll announce a bit later
 • User Interface improvements
 • Lots of shader and other optimizations that should significantly improve the game’s performance

2T Stalker Gallery

Another Raid event awaits you after the conclusion of the Enigma’s Legacy Battle Path, this time with incredibly cool skins we know you’ll love along with plenty of other rewards.

There’s, of course, even more and we’re looking forward to your feedback during the public testing phase, which is coming in late August. For now, enjoy the Engima’s Legacy Battle Path and the rest of Update 0.32 content as well as the events we are preparing for July.

See you on the battlefield!
