Historical Camouflages – Korean War

Commanders!

Today’s camouflage stands out a bit as it’s not strictly accurate – instead, it’s basically a partial recreation of a paintjob used on American tanks during the Korean War.

Every war has its iconic imagery. The Great War has the endless trenches. The Second World War has many such themes – the endless waves of T-34 tanks and Panzers slugging it out at Prokhorovka, the flag of Iwo Jima or the Victory Banner flying over the Reichstag. The Vietnam War has its helicopters and Operation Desert Storm its burning oil fields. The Korean War, on the other hand, is a bit harder to define image-wise.

There is, however, one image associated with it that many people are familiar with – a Sherman tank with a giant tiger mouth and eyes (and sometimes claws) painted on its front hull. The idea behind this was some rudimentary psychological warfare. The lunar year 1950-1951 (the lunar calendar doesn’t correspond to the one we use) was a year of the Tiger according to the traditional zodiac.

It was therefore assumed that painting tiger faces on tanks would terrify the Chinese forces intervening in Korea from the late 1950. After all, an average Chinese soldier was at the time thought to be superstitious and poorly educated, which is why such a tactic was deemed worth trying. An unknown but relatively high amount of tanks was painted that way in 1950. Various types were used – the early M46s, the Shermans, even some Chaffee tanks.

Whether it had any real effects is a mystery to this day. The American tankers enjoyed adorning their steel steeds this way but that’s probably about it. There was little standardization to the paintjobs but they were all bright and well-visible.

The most famous operation these painted tanks participated in was Operation Ripper from the March of 1951 – the liberation of Seoul. Ironically it took place after the Year of the Tiger had ended. As a result, the paintjobs were removed shortly afterwards.

The Armored Warfare version of the paintjob is based on a specific tank belonging to the 5th Regimental Combat Team, 4th Platoon. The photo was taken near the Han River in the January of 1951.

As we noted above, the camouflage isn’t exactly historical as the tiger paintjob is missing. We hope you will at least find it interesting. It’s currently available as a part of the Korean mission to celebrate the Korean Independence Day.

See you on the battlefield!

Offer: Korean Independence

Commanders!

To celebrate the August 15 Independence Day of South Korea, aside from the mission, we’ve prepared a special set of Korean-themed bundles for you, including:
 • T-80U ROK skin for the T-80U Tier 7 MBT
 • Korean camouflage bundle with real-life camouflages and base paints
 • K1A1 Military bundle with a real-life camouflage and base paints
Between August 15 and August 18, 2022, the following items will be available:
T-80U ROK Skin
The T-80U Main Battle Tank was the best mass-produced variant of the T-80 series. Back in the 1980s, it was specifically designed to establish Soviet superiority on Cold War battlefields. Featuring new Kontakt-5 set of Explosive Reactive Armor, it was possibly the most dangerous Soviet Main Battle Tank of the time. To read more about its history, please visit our dedicated article.

The T-80U ROK skin turns your progression MBT into the model used by South Korea. This Asian country acquired more over a score of these tanks in the 1990s as a partial payment for an old Soviet-era debt and has been using them ever since. You can read more about this skin in our dedicated article.

This skin is available in the T-80U ROK bundle, which contains:
 • T-80U ROK skin for T-80U MBT
 • 7 days of Premium Time
 • 500 Gold

Please note that in order to use the skin, you need to own the T-80U Tier 7 progression MBT.
Korean Camouflages
In this offer, we have two camouflages and two base paints for you in one bundle.

The Korean (Alternative) camouflage is a take on the standard Korean camouflage that we already have in the game, with slightly different colors and less blurry, brush-painted lines for those of you, who prefer a crisp, clean look. It’s still in use on various Korean MBTs. You can read more about it in our dedicated article.

The Korean Desert camouflage, on the other hand, was used by the South Korean units sent to Iraq. A small contingent of mostly doctors and engineers was deployed there after the conflict, using, amongst other things, modified Kia trucks. You can read more about it in our dedicated article.

And, last but not least, the base paints are also based on real-life appearances. The Korean Export base paint (a shade of a sand color) was used during the unveiling of the AS21 Redback prototype for the Australian military. The Korean Khaki base paint was also used during an expo – this time by Kia on its KLTV light truck prototype (this platform is the basis of the K-153C Raybolt we have in the game).

All four camouflages and base paints can be used on any vehicle that allows visual customization and in any environment.
K1A1 Military Bundle
The K1A1 is an upgraded version of the older South-Korean K1 MBT. It’s a very distant relative of the Abrams MBT with the main difference being the presence of a hydro-pneumatic suspension, allowing the vehicle to tilt itself forward, backward and to the sides.

In Armored Warfare, the K1A1 is a Tier 7 Premium MBT. The combination of a 120mm gun, good mobility and solid armor (all of them roughly the same as the M1A1 has) as well as the ability to mark enemy targets for increased damage make it powerful opponent even in its basic form with additional upgrades readily available.

The K1A1 is now available in the Military bundle, which contains:
 • K1A1 Tier 7 Premium MBT
 • Korean (Alternative) camouflage
 • Korean Khaki base paint
 • Korean Export base paint

You can learn more about the Korean (Alternative) camouflage in our dedicated article.

We hope that you will enjoy the offer and, as always:

See you on the battlefield!
