Historical Skins – T-80U ROK

Commanders!

We’ve already unveiled two Korean camouflages that will be introduced into the game as a part of an upcoming South Korean asset pack – the Desert camouflage and the Standard (Alternative) camouflage. However, today, we would like to unveil something many of you have been asking for, for years. We are, of course, talking about the South Korean skin for the T-80U MBT.

The Soviet T-80U Main Battle Tank in Korean service is one of the most popular and best known cases of a pro-west country using Soviet equipment.

The way this happened was relatively simple and straightforward. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Russian Federation inherited not only its vast armories, but also its debts to other countries and South Korea was one of the creditors. The Soviet Union was importing, amongst other things, South Korean consumer products in the late 1980s and, despite typically paying in natural resources such as timber and oil, accrued a debt of roughly 1.5 billion USD due to its poor economic situation.

The thing was, Russia was struggling economically in the 1990s and South Korea was keenly aware of the fact. That is why, after some lengthy negotiations, a deal was struck in 1995, allowing Russia to repay a half of its debt in military technologies. As a result of this deal called “Red Bear-1” (or Bul-Gom-1), South Korea received 300 million USD worth of modern Soviet weapons between 1996 and 1998, including:
 • 33 T-80U tanks
 • 30 BMP-3 IFVs
 • 8 Ka-32 helicopters
 • Dozens of ATGM and MANPADS weapon systems (Metis-M, Igla)

This only paid for a portion of the debt, but it was what Russia could afford at the time. When its economic situation improved in the early 2000s, another deal (“Red Bear-2”) was made in 2002 regarding further arms exports worth roughly 267 million USD. These arms were exported to South Korea between 2005 and 2006 and included:
 • 23 Il-103 training aircraft
 • 37 more BMP-3 IFVs (bringing the total to 67)
 • 10 more T-80U MBTs (bringing the total to 43)
 • 7 more Ka-32 helicopters (bringing the total to 15)
 • 3 Tsapliya-class landing craft
 • 2000 Metis-M guided missiles

The political implications of the first deal were rather interesting. South Korea (already an industrial powerhouse) did want to obtain access to (at the time) cutting edge military technologies, but didn’t want to cross the United States and the U.S. military complex wasn’t exactly keen on providing them with access to the newest toys. However, since the USA managed to obtain 5 T-80Us via Britain in 1992, there was no real danger of political backlash and the whole thing went through.

The T-80Us have been in Korean service since 1996 and, even after more than two decades they are still actively used by the military, even though they are by now technologically inferior to the indigenous South Korean tanks such as the K1 series and the K2 series. The reason for that is that while the K1 series had been continuously updated over the years, the T-80U tanks remain in “stock” condition.

The South Korean military likes the tanks more or less, even though they have a reputation of not being exactly reliable and the crews complain about their cramped interiors. Of the two, the maintenance is actually a serious problem for the Koreans because while some parts are actually domestically produced, the more sensitive components have to be imported from Russia. This also goes for the ammunition (setting up a production line for such a limited number of tanks would not make any sense). The prices of spare parts do ever keep increasing.

The tanks have several advantages over the K1A1 MBTs. For one, they are lighter, allowing them to better operate in South Korea’s mountains. They also have excellent mobility in general thanks to their powerful turbine engines. On the downside, aside from the abovementioned reliability issues, they are relatively fuel-hungry and generally obsolete. They are also nowhere near as comfortable as the indigenous Korean MBTs.

With that being said, their time is almost done. The T-80U MBTs are being gradually phased out from service. Of the original 43 vehicles, only roughly 30 to 35 are still operational and that share continues to decrease. In 2016, Russia actually offered to buy those tanks back and, presumably, selling them to other potential customers (Cyprus seems the most likely option here) since the T-80U isn’t one of the main service types. The Russian units typically use the T-80B model or, more specifically, the upgraded T-80BVM version.

The skin is fitted with typical Korean markings as well as parts of a wading kit and the crew’s belongings in various stowage bins. The lower frontal plate is also covered with a “skirt”, although it does not act like armor.

And last but definitely not least, we also have a piece of good news for those of you not entirely interested in this skin, or concerned about model quality. We are working on a full T-80U model overhaul, although we currently do not have any deadline to share for that.

We hope that you will enjoy this skin and, as always:

See you on the battlefield!

Between August 5 and 12, 2021, the following items will be available:
Type 90
The Type 90 is the current service main battle tank of the Japanese Self-Defense Force. On the outside, it vaguely resembled the German Leopard 2, but inside, the vehicle’s completely different. It was adequately armed and armored for the time it was developed in, but what made it really stand out were its cutting-edge Japanese electronics and its hydraulic suspension, allowing the tank to tilt itself forward or backward, enhancing its gun elevation and depression beyond what the turret would normally allow. This trait was considered to be an important for Japan, as much of its landmass is covered by mountainous areas. You can read more about it in our dedicated article.

In Armored Warfare, the Type 90 is a Tier 7 Premium Main Battle Tank. Gameplay-wise, it resembles the Leopard 2 and Abrams version of the same Tier. The difference between the Leopard and the Type 90 MBT lie in the presence of an automatic loading mechanism – otherwise, the firepower and protection levels is roughly the same with the Japanese tank having a little less armor, compensated by more module hitpoints. Overall, it is not the best-protected MBT on the battlefield, requiring careful long-range gameplay. However, the advanced electronics installed in this tank as well as its hydraulic suspension allow it to aim faster than all its class and Tier counterparts.

The Type 90 Main Battle Tank is now available in two bundles with two epic skins based on real-life design. These skins represent special camouflages used by the Japanese Self-Defense Forces during various winter exercises. Additionally, both bundles include a Japanese winter camouflage. You can read more about the skins and the camouflage in our dedicated article.

As for the specific bundles – the Winter Warrior bundle contains:
 • Type 90 Tier 7 Premium MBT
 • Winter Warrior skin for Type 90
 • Japanese Winter camouflage

The Snowstorm bundle contains:
 • Type 90 Tier 7 Premium MBT
 • Winter Warrior skin for Type 90
 • Japanese Winter camouflage

While the skins can only be applied to the Type 90, the camouflage can be used on any vehicle that allows visual customization.
Type 10
The Type 10 MBT is the most modern Japanese Main Battle Tank in service and one of the most advanced war machines in the world. Using sophisticated electronics and crystalline steel armor, this tank is more than a match for any enemy that would threaten the islands of Japan. You can learn more about it in our dedicated article.

In Armored Warfare, the Type 10 is a Tier 10 Premium Main Battle Tank. What puts it apart from the other MBTs of its Tier is its special NERA armor. This highly-mobile MBT starts every battle well-armored, but the protection levels decrease with every shot taken. Additionally, this MBT features a special system that tells you the exact chance to penetrate your target. Overall, it’s one of the most powerful MBTs of its Tier and certainly a good choice for players, who prefer rapid action to slow advances.

The Type 10 Tier 10 Premium MBT is available in our Web Shop via Loot Crates. Collect 100 blueprint pieces from these crates to obtain the vehicle.
Elite Commanders
• Alexander Cortez
 • Alisa Korhonen
 • Erin O’Connell
 • Austin Harper
 • Ophelia Kitescu

As for the commanders themselves, this guide will provide you with useful tips on how to configure their skills.
ZTQ-15
The ZTQ-15 is the current most modern domestic Chinese Light Tank and is reserved for the Chinese military only with its export counterpart, VT-5, offered for export. The ZTQ-15 Light Tank is intended to be used in mountainous regions of China where standard MBTs are all but impossible to operate. You can learn more about it in our dedicated article.

In Armored Warfare, the ZTQ-15 is a Tier 9 Premium Light Tank. It combines excellent mobility with plenty of firepower as well as adequate protection for its Tier and vehicle class. It also features several neat elements that increase its value on the battlefield, such as its active suspension and the ability to launch guided missiles from its gun or its advanced ERA. For players who prefer fast-paced, high-risk and high-reward combat style, it’s one of the best options out there.
VT-5
The VT-5 is a modern Chinese Light Tank that was developed specifically with export in mind. There are many reasons why a country without its own tank development should opt to purchase a Light Tank instead of a full-scale Main Battle Tank. It’s equally as fast if not faster with equal firepower but, what is most important, it is affordable. The VT-5 excels in all these categories. While its armor cannot match that of an MBT, it can protect its crew against most infantry threats thanks to its ERA and cage armor sets. It also has a powerful 105mm gun capable of firing guided missiles, it is packed with advanced electronics and is supremely agile thanks to its 1000hp diesel engine. Simply put, wraps cutting edge technologies up into an affordable bundle. You can learn more about it in a dedicated article.

In Armored Warfare, the VT-5 is a very powerful Tier 9 Premium Light Tank. Fast and agile, it features solid levels of protection (the configuration in the game is the one featuring the ERA kit as well as the turret cage armor) and a good rate of fire. Additionally, its gun is capable of firing guided missiles. It’s an ideal machine for players who value speed and agility, as it offers plenty of both. The VT-5 is capable of dancing around its opponents on the battlefield, outperforming even some AFVs in mobility.
Type 96B
The Type 96B MBT, as its name suggests, is an evolution of the Type 96A, featuring such elements as an upgraded fire control system and a much more powerful engine, resulting in considerably better mobility and speed. Unlike the Type 96A, however, the Type 96B is a prototype, designed for the Chinese military team to use during the annual Tank Biathlon event in Russia. In 2017, the Chinese team won the second place, being defeated only by Russia. You can learn more about its history in our dedicated article!

In Armored Warfare, the Type 96B is a Tier 8 Premium Main Battle Tank. Gameplay-wise, it’s very agile and fast for its class and uses advanced ammunition, making it highly suitable for players who prefer mobility over armor protection, even though it can take a lot of punishment as well.
Type 89
The Type 89 Infantry Fighting Vehicle is the current Japanese service IFV. It was built in very small numbers between 1989 and 2004. The low-production meant that, with the development costs sunk into it, each unit was incredibly expensive. In fact, to date, the Type 89 is the most expensive IFV in the world. Otherwise it’s generally unremarkable – last generation steel armor, a 35mm autocannon and massive guided missiles (that were also meant for landing ship destruction instead of just anti-tank combat) are generally being all phased out by now. The Type 89 is, however, still waiting for its replacement. You can read more about it in our dedicated article.

In Armored Warfare, the Type 89 is a Tier 7 Premium Armored Fighting Vehicle that is capable of not only deploying Mechanized Infantry, but also to destroy its targets at long distances using its powerful guided missiles. It is also fast and maneuverable, but does not feature thick armor.

Historical Camouflages – Korean (Alternative)

Commanders!

Apart from the desert camouflage, we’re preparing one more Korean paintjob for you – an alternative take on the Korean camouflage.

The camouflage in question can be seen on the photo above, featuring a K1 Main Battle Tank during an exercise.

Now, of course, the standard Korean camouflage (which we already have in the game) is well-known, almost iconic, and it is applied to a pretty much all types of Korean armored vehicles. The camouflage itself is quite old and is clearly based on the American MERDC pattern from the 1970s, although it’s not exactly its.

The camouflage consists of four colors, roughly similar to the official American colors called Forest Green, Black, Sand and Field Drab. The shades are different though, with the brown color being brighter and more towards red and the sand color is lighter as well, more towards grey.

These colors are typically applied via a spray, although in this “alternative” case, we have the lines clearly defined as a part of a professional paint job.

We hope that you’ll enjoy this camouflage and, as always:

See you on the battlefield!

Server Maintenance

On the 5th of August 2021, starting from 8:00 CEST, the server will not be available for two hours due to a planned server maintenance.
