Perihelion Update #14

Commanders!

Today, we’d like to update the Perihelion event status:

Introducing Commander Samuel Thorpe

Commanders!

Samuel Thorpe is the newest commander in Armored Warfare and the first addition to the pool in a few years. His history is closely tied to Perihelion.

Samuel Thorpe was born during the first years of the Collapse, although it wasn’t known as such back then. His parents perished during a violent civil revolt, murdered by a vicious mob. In an out of foster homes for most of his youth, life offered Samuel few options but to join the U.S. Army. Later, he became a small-time mercenary as many opportunities arose for the men of his profession.

His lucky break came in the summer of 2028 when he was hired by David Murdoch, a legendary investor from Chicago putting together a small but well-armed security force. He was supposed to help train the troops in Arizona but the operation ended with an unexpected outcome. A mysterious enemy attacked and decimated a nearby military base. Woken in the night by the sound of gunfire, Thorpe and his troops rushed to aid the beleaguered U.S. Army troops and managed to fend of the attack. Samuel is still relatively inexperienced and eager to claw his way up the food chain to reach the top.

Gameplay-wise, Samuel Thorpe currently shares the skill field with Maximilian Koenig with his main ability being an Experience income boost, which makes him highly suitable for new players and reflecting the fact that he came to Perihelion to provide training.

But here’s the interesting part for those of you who already familiar with the game – his skills may and will change. Over the course of his stint in the desert, Thorpe became familiar with his assigned vehicle, a customized BMPT by the name of Black Mamba. His skills will therefore reflect this choice in the future, but this may not be the end. Lore-wise, Thorpe may switch vehicles in the future and his skills could reflect that. But who decides that?

You, of course. The way to make such choices will be indicated in future Perihelion missions. Participate in the Perihelion event in an indicated manner to directly decide this commander’s fate. It will be in your hands.

We hope that you will enjoy this challenge and, as always:

See you on the battlefield!

In Development: Type 99B

Commanders!

Today, we’d like to tell you more about the Type 99B Main Battle Tank that’s coming to Armored Warfare.

As its name suggests, the Type 99B is a variant of the Type 99A Main Battle Tank you all know and love. With one caveat, that is – it isn’t real. No such thing as Type 99B exists in real life, this is an alternative history vehicle built around the idea of making an urban fighting variant of the Type 99A MBT. The idea is based on a render that appeared on the Chinese Weibo social network around 2016. In the render author’s mind, the biggest changes compared to the Type 99A included:
 • Improved ERA with cage armor covering the rear
 • Hard-kill APS (possibly of the GL-5 type)
 • Improved sensors and FCS with advanced optics
 • 360 degrees vision system for the crew
 • Roof-mounted RCWS

The rest of the vehicle remained roughly the same.

Now, there are a lot of problems with the concept. For one, it suffers from the same issues some Russian tanks are suffering in real life – it has a carousel-style automatic loading mechanism and, from what we can see, no extra roof armor to speak of – only what looks like some composite plating. Why is there a man-operated machine gun in front of the RCWS like that? And a few other issues. And that just wouldn’t do – the way it was, the concept would fix no issues that exist with our Tier 10 Type 99A2, which is why, in the end, we decided to heavily deviate from the original vision. Here’s what we came up with.

As we wrote above, the Type 99B will be a Tier 10 Premium Main Battle Tank.

As you can see, it looks a lot like Type 99A2 at first glance (with the obvious difference being the dozer blade), but not to worry – the tank has a couple of tricks up its sleeve.

Let’s start with the model. The original Type 99A2 has a couple of issues that we’ll also be addressing and that are already fixed in Type 99B. For starters, it tends to explode rather enthusiastically when hit from the front. That’s caused by the fact that the ammo carousel is located on the bottom of the hull and it’s possible to penetrate it either via the lower frontal armor weakness or via the thinly armored sides of its hull.

There are three main changes we made to the Type 99B that address that. First and foremost, the turret was extended and the ammunition rack module was moved to the back of the back of the back of the turret. Welcome to the 21st century where urban combat can and does happen.

Secondly, the lower frontal plate and frontal side weakspots are covered by the dozer blade – and yes, it also increases its ramming damage. And, last but not least, the hull sides are now covered with ERA elements. These go further to the back than on the original Type 99B, but we dropped the cage armor (which doesn’t do much in the game anyway). In other words, this tank is designed around Armored Warfare gameplay to make it interesting. The tank will be protected by a hard-kill APS system (similar to the one used on the ZTQ-15) as well as 360 degree smoke cover.

Next, the firepower. The tank’s armed with two weapons. The first one is the main 125mm cannon (the longer version like on the Type 99A2) with identical performance to the Type 99A2 (we’ll probably tweak the reload time in order not to make it imbalanced). The gun fires APFSDS rounds as well as your favorite BTJ-III HEAT shells.

The second system is a roof-mounted Red Arrow ATGM launcher with two tubes firing thermobaric missiles similar to the Ataka-F model of the Ramka/Terminator. As the launcher is roof-mounted, these will serve as mid-long range weapons to dislodge static enemy vehicles from their positions. The original idea for this vehicle was to have a shorter gun and a classic ATGM launcher combo (with tandem warheads) with the gameplay resembling that of the popular Seongun-915 MBT (switching between missiles and shells to maximize your damage per minute value). We decided to do things this way to make them enjoyable but feel free to tell us what you think!

And finally, the mobility. In short, despite the additional weight, it’ll be roughly the same as the Type 99A2 one.

In summation, what you have here is a fast and agile mid-range support MBT that won’t be able to reliable break through enemy lines, but will be an excellent fire support platform. To address the huge elephant in the room – yes, this all does sound like a better version of the Type 99A2. That is because, simply put, it is. We’d like to implement some of the fixes we are planning for the progression Tier 10 MBT, which, as we are aware, performs notoriously poorly, the previous rebalance didn’t help in this regard. But, rest assured, we will take a look at the performance of the Type 99A2 in the near future. We won’t leave it hanging, that much we can promise.

We hope that you’ll enjoy the Type 99B and, as always:

See you on the battlefield!
Type 10
The Type 10 MBT is the most modern Japanese Main Battle Tank in service and one of the most advanced war machines in the world. Using sophisticated electronics and crystalline steel armor, this tank is more than a match for any enemy that would threaten the islands of Japan. You can learn more about it in our dedicated article.

In Armored Warfare, the Type 10 is a Tier 10 Premium Main Battle Tank. What puts it apart from the other MBTs of its Tier is its special NERA armor. This highly-mobile MBT starts every battle well-armored, but the protection levels decrease with every shot taken. Additionally, this MBT features a special system that tells you the exact chance to penetrate your target. Overall, it’s one of the most powerful MBTs of its Tier and certainly a good choice for players, who prefer rapid action to slow advances.

The Type 10 Tier 10 Premium MBT is available in our Web Shop via Loot Crates. Collect 100 blueprint pieces from these crates to obtain the vehicle.
ZTQ-15
The ZTQ-15 is the current most modern domestic Chinese Light Tank and is reserved for the Chinese military only with its export counterpart, VT-5, offered for export. The ZTQ-15 Light Tank is intended to be used in mountainous regions of China where standard MBTs are all but impossible to operate. You can learn more about it in our dedicated article.

In Armored Warfare, the ZTQ-15 is a Tier 9 Premium Light Tank. It combines excellent mobility with plenty of firepower as well as adequate protection for its Tier and vehicle class. It also features several neat elements that increase its value on the battlefield, such as its active suspension and the ability to launch guided missiles from its gun or its advanced ERA. For players who prefer fast-paced, high-risk and high-reward combat style, it’s one of the best options out there.
QN-506
The QN-506 fire support vehicle is a Chinese attempt to design a cheap, export-oriented alternative to the Russian BMPT series. Instead of converting a second or third generation MBT, the engineers at Wuhan Guide Infrared Co., Ltd., likely to keep the vehicle as affordable as possible, opted to base their project on the Type 59 MBT, which is, in its basic form anyway, a copy of the old Soviet T-55 medium tank from the late 1950s. They jam-packed it with cutting edge electronics and a number of weapon systems, including ATGMs, an automatic cannon or smaller caliber rockets. However, despite the use of an unmanned turret, the protection levels of this vehicle are still quite low and, so far, there haven’t been any signs of interest in the QN-506. You can learn more about this vehicle in our dedicated article.

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

In Armored Warfare, the QN-506 is a Premium Tier 9 Tank Destroyer that gameplay-wise resembles the popular BMPT series. However, unlike the Russian Terminators, it has a number of interesting features including tree different weapon systems (30mm cannon, 70mm unguided rockets and 151mm ATGMs) and loitering recon ammunition flying towards the end of a map and spotting everything in its path. The last ability is unique to the QN-506 and makes it one of the most potent support vehicles on the battlefield.
VT-5
The VT-5 is a modern Chinese Light Tank that was developed specifically with export in mind. There are many reasons why a country without its own tank development should opt to purchase a Light Tank instead of a full-scale Main Battle Tank. It’s equally as fast if not faster with equal firepower but, what is most important, it is affordable. The VT-5 excels in all these categories. While its armor cannot match that of an MBT, it can protect its crew against most infantry threats thanks to its ERA and cage armor sets. It also has a powerful 105mm gun capable of firing guided missiles, it is packed with advanced electronics and is supremely agile thanks to its 1000hp diesel engine. Simply put, wraps cutting edge technologies up into an affordable bundle. You can learn more about it in a dedicated article.

In Armored Warfare, the VT-5 is a very powerful Tier 9 Premium Light Tank. Fast and agile, it features solid levels of protection (the configuration in the game is the one featuring the ERA kit as well as the turret cage armor) and a good rate of fire. Additionally, its gun is capable of firing guided missiles. It’s an ideal machine for players who value speed and agility, as it offers plenty of both. The VT-5 is capable of dancing around its opponents on the battlefield, outperforming even some AFVs in mobility.
Pindad SBS
The SBS platform is one of the first domestic armored vehicles developed by Pindad (the largest Indonesian armor producer) for Indonesia and is officially listed as a “light tank”. It was developed sometimes in the early 2010s with some prototypes in different configuration appearing in public in 2014 or so. The variant in the game is a long-range MLRS fire support vehicle with a 122mm multi-barreled rocket launcher. You can learn more about it in our dedicated article.

In Armored Warfare, the Pindad SBS is a Tier 8 Premium Armored Fighting Vehicle. This AFV is fairly unique, since its main weapon is a multi-barreled rocket launcher capable of firing over obstacles. This makes the Pindad incredibly powerful in both offense and defense. Static enemy targets stand no chance! This vehicle is best used with Commander Ophelia Kitescu and in a platoon – the firepower of such a formation is truly without equal.
K1A1
The K1A1 is an upgraded version of the older South-Korean K1 MBT. It’s a very distant relative of the Abrams MBT with the main difference being the presence of a hydro-pneumatic suspension, allowing the vehicle to tilt itself forward, backward and to the sides.

In Armored Warfare, the K1A1 is a Tier 7 Premium MBT. The combination of a 120mm gun, good mobility and solid armor (all of them roughly the same as the M1A1 has) as well as the ability to mark enemy targets for increased damage make it powerful opponent even in its basic form with additional upgrades readily available.

The K1A1 is also available in the South Korean bundle, which contains:
 • K1A1 Tier 7 Premium MBT
 • Korean camouflage
 • Korean "Squad Leader" decal

You can learn more about the Korean camouflage in our dedicated article.
Type 90
The Type 90 is the current service main battle tank of the Japanese Self-Defense Force. On the outside, it vaguely resembled the German Leopard 2, but inside, the vehicle’s completely different. It was adequately armed and armored for the time it was developed in, but what made it really stand out were its cutting-edge Japanese electronics and its hydraulic suspension, allowing the tank to tilt itself forward or backward, enhancing its gun elevation and depression beyond what the turret would normally allow. This trait was considered to be an important for Japan, as much of its landmass is covered by mountainous areas. You can read more about it in our dedicated article.

In Armored Warfare, the Type 90 is a Tier 7 Premium Main Battle Tank. Gameplay-wise, it resembles the Leopard 2 and Abrams version of the same Tier. The difference between the Leopard and the Type 90 MBT lie in the presence of an automatic loading mechanism – otherwise, the firepower and protection levels is roughly the same with the Japanese tank having a little less armor, compensated by more module hitpoints. Overall, it is not the best-protected MBT on the battlefield, requiring careful long-range gameplay. However, the advanced electronics installed in this tank as well as its hydraulic suspension allow it to aim faster than all its class and Tier counterparts.

The Type 90 is also available in the Japanese bundle, which contains:
 • Type 90 Tier 7 Premium MBT
 • Japanese camouflage
 • Two Japanese decals
 • Japanese red flag

You can learn more about the Japanese camouflage in our dedicated article.
Camouflage Loot Crate
Today, we’re launching another Camouflage Loot Crate on MY.GAMES Market.

As its name suggests, this new Loot Crate contains various camouflages and skins. This iteration contains the following new ones:
 • Skin: Kraken (K2)
 • Skin: Archangel (XM1A3)
 • Skin: Revenant (Wilk XC-8)
 • Skin: Hellbeast (Leclerc T4)

We’re implementing a new mechanic to the MY.GAMES Market Loot Crates (no worries – the in-game crates will remain the same). The mechanic is simple – instead of purchasing the Loot Crates, you purchase keys to them, which you then use to unlock them.

However, please note:
 • Discounts do not apply to Loot Crates, but rather to Keys
 • It is possible to buy multiple keys for a single chest type
 • Keys belong to individual Loot Crates (that is, a key to a Commander Loot Crate purchased now is not guaranteed to work on a Commander Loot Crate a month down the line)
 • Keys can be found in a separate Market section
Treasure Trove
Today, we have a special offer for you. A veritable treasure trove of 10.000 Gold awaits you at a discounted price.

Please note that this item can only be purchased once per user. You can find out more about Gold and its uses in our dedicated article.
