Starbase - Progress Notes Week 41 (2020)

Hello everyone! Here are the progress notes of week 40 - hope you enjoy!

Please note that the "Progress Notes" are different from the Starbase Alpha "Patch Notes". Progress Notes are snippets from the development team and what has been worked on during the previous week, and many of the features might not be present in the current or upcoming builds of the Closed Alpha. Some features, especially in the design portion, can be subject to change as the development continues.

[h3]Design[/h3] Features
  • Building Tool UX improvements have been designed
  • New Mining Job has been tested and configured
  • Durability Tool modes can now be toggled from Blueprint tab in Universal Tool
  • Autonaming of the thruster device fields has been tested in Spaceship Designer
  • Design for a new armor system has been worked on, new system is more streamlined and simpler than before
  • Economy design regarding credit generation to the world and starter jobs has been worked on
  • New player health system is being designed (Along with features such as healing/repairing, missing limbs, their effects and attaching them)
  • Sprinting has been implemented and going under testing by QA
  • Design for how to establish your own station in the space and begin the building process is under works
Other
  • Design adjustments to the Ship Permissions UI and Ship menu UI have been made
    New five-part control table set has been added ( Devices/controls )


[h3]Code[/h3] Gameplay
  • Work on station building and Auction House continues
  • Modifications were made to projectile damage calculations to make them more simplified
  • Towing ships was allowed within safe zones
  • Frame integrity was config-tweaked to compensate for last week's calculation changes
  • A number of optimizations were implemented for the station server
  • Station visibility range was increased from 50 km to 250 km
Spaceship/Station Designer
  • A fix was made to a bug that caused the Spaceship Designer to freeze when bolting, unbolting, removing objects and undoing in a certain order.


[h3]Art[/h3] Animations and Emotes
  • Work on 1st person animation polish continues
  • 1st person rummage animations were worked on
Stations
  • All legacy assets should now be removed from station scenes.
  • A new version of the blueprint projector was created for player station building
Weapons & Armor
  • Adamant armor set texture quality was polished
  • Praetorian armor set texturing is in progress
  • The scale and the distance the Mining Laser FX travels were reduced to be more balanced
Other
  • Ice rock placement tests on large asteroids are underway
  • Testing and fixing was done on rock flickering and fading issues on asteroids
  • An asset for transponder unit was added
  • A new unique effect with a 'measurement pulse' for the Rangefinder was created so it is now more distinguishable from other similar beam effects

There’s been quite a few big updates to the Starbase Alpha during the past month. There have been changes made and new features added that change gameplay, especially when it comes to building ships and mining.

This video takes a look at these new features, including the Material Selection Tool for the Spaceship Designer, the newly redistributed asteroid field, Demolition Job, Audio Signal Device and more.

Hello everyone! Here are the progress notes of week 40 - hope you enjoy!

[h3]Design[/h3] Features
  • Ore Collectors adjustable power consumption design has been finished
  • Universal Tool usability improvements regarding ship blueprint have been designed
  • Armor system testing is underway, values have been fixed and tested based on feedback
  • Material design: density values of heaviest ores have been fixed to make them less painful for ships to carry around
  • First phase of transponder re-design has been completed and code tasks were created
Stations
  • DURATΞCH Spaceship shop has been added to Starting station
  • Crusader's "Nate" has been placed back into Okim Industries' spaceship shop 2
  • Duplicate ships "Vigo", "Port Authority Shuttle" and "Merino" have been removed from Rando spaceship shop 2 and Okim Industries' spaceship shop 2
  • New player spaceships have been added:
    • Salamander, Transferens (updated), Consultor, The Martok, Mitersaw, Walter, Chemos Badger-28, Bumble, Worker Ant, Marmot-TNK, Modulus FR, Modulus MN, Modulus, Markolf Typ1, Javelin, Immerius
Spaceships / Spaceship Designer
  • Design for thruster device field automatic naming to match Main Flight Computer in Spaceship Designer was finished
  • Virtual mass for ore crates in Spaceship Designer has been worked on; allows testing how cargo mass would affect spaceship durability and behavior
Other
  • Shipwreck for upcoming Repair Job is under work and being tested


[h3]Code[/h3] Gameplay
  • Work on station building continues
  • Work on ship-to-ship resource transfer continues
  • Work on Repair Job continues
  • A fix was made for Player velocity to not start immediately decaying after unseating (with mag boots turned off)
  • Sound manager anomalies, related to frequently changing sound sources being handled as a combination, have been reduced
  • Frame integrity now detects chains of poorly connected frame beams, further reducing for example the exploitability of replacing long beams with several short ones
  • A fix was made for angular forces being produced on other objects by thruster exhausts
  • Pushing things with exhausts has been made less stable
User Interface
  • A fix was made for item shop not having savior for preview
  • A fix was made for item sell panel not updating icon
  • A frame for test flight mode tooltip was made and tested in a few places that could be used to open or close it
  • The implementation of dialog for test flight tooltips has been started
Audio
  • Bullet impact sound system has been worked on
Spaceship/Station Designer
  • Station part count limit added to Mega Station Designer
  • Station build area limit added to Mega Station Designer
  • Rotating multiple objects in local space now chooses the local space of the latest chosen component


[h3]Art[/h3] Animations and Emotes
  • Work on remote explosive animations continues
  • Work on 1st person emotes continues
  • New rifle fire animations have been made (3rd person)
  • Rummage animation has been polished (3rd person)
Stations
  • Floating holograms have been removed around Work Hub
Weapons & Armor
  • New upcoming armor set "Praetorian"
  • Strix armorset texture quality polished and paintjobs have been updated
  • Adamant armorset texture quality polishing in progress
  • Updated Mining Saw effects by reducing them in size to make them less prominent and dominating over the action
  • Updated Pickaxe Hit VFX to be quicker and the sparks more random
  • Updated the Mounted Laser Hit VFX to be more stronger and intense at the point of impact
Other
  • Large ice asteroid tests are underway
  • A new version of the audio signal device has been made
  • All Ship Designer asset icons should now be finished and assigned

Hello everyone! Here are the progress notes of week 39 - hope you enjoy!

[h3]Design[/h3] Features
  • Player head health has been increased, players are now able to die from headshots
  • Repair Job gameplay improvements have been worked on
  • Mining Job gameplay rework has been finished, mostly to accommodate new tutorial features
  • Armor update design and related math have been finished
  • Asteroid belt design and material configurations have been started for higher progression tiers
User Interface
  • UI and walkthrough features for the Repair Job tutorial have been worked on
  • Improvements have been made to the Demolition Job tutorial experience
  • Quest Tool UI has been reworked to work better with the current tutorial quest implementation
  • New tutorial phases have been added to Mining Job and Repair Job
Stations
  • Mining job hall has been updated with new workstation layout and structural changes.
  • Player spaceship shop updated:
    • All player spaceship shops' Hangar showrooms now have one large and one very large showcase areas. Mediums have been removed.
    • Due to the Hangar showroom update, spaceships "201 Bruiser" and "Nate" have been temporarily removed.
    • The following spaceships have been relocated: "Buffalo", "Vidar", Akimbo 1", "Racer"
  • Okim's Magnus has been removed
  • Kenetor's Buffalo, which had disappeared from Rando Spaceship shop due to LOD issues, has now been fixed
  • Missing Refill & Recharge slots have been placed back into Proia station
  • Two Mass Transit stops have been removed from Starting station due to them blocking the walkways of the updated station layout
Spaceships / Spaceship Designer
  • Transparency of windows and glasses in Spaceship Designer has been changed to make them a bit more visible


[h3]Code[/h3] Gameplay
  • Work on station building continues, auto-building has been optimized
  • Work on Repair Job continues, spawning issue has been fixed and repair checks have been added
  • Ship frame integrity calculation has been reworked
  • Frame integrity display was improved in Spaceship Designer
  • Broken thruster attachments (mainly nozzles) should no longer block their thrusters
  • A short bolt may now sometimes be placed when a longer one would be invalid only due to a gap between the components it reaches
User Interface
  • Chat was updated to unhide a channel when sending message to it
Audio
  • A fix was made for flyby audio not triggering with fast projectiles
Spaceship Designer
  • Switching to edit mode while editing a YOLOL chip in test mode should no longer lock up controls
  • Editing YOLOL scripts in Spaceship Designer should no longer lock controls
  • Unsaved changes are now prompted when exiting the game from the menu or using ALT+F4
[h3]Art[/h3] Animations and Emotes
  • Work on explosive drill animations continues
  • Work on remote explosive animations continues
  • 1st person versions of select emotes are in the making
  • New ADS poses made for rifle and pistol (3rd person)
  • Unarmed rummage animation polished (3rd person)
Stations / Lot Designer
  • Marketplace's legacy asset replacement is underway
  • Holograms that indicate which shop monitors sell weapons and which ammunition were added to Ares weapon shop in Marketplace
  • The colors of Asteroid Collection buildings were changed
Weapons
  • Hit spot for Tractor, Cargo Lock and Rangefinder Beams have been fixed to be more persistent
  • Mining Laser VFX updated (both Hit and Shoot fx)
    • A lot stronger and also more in line with other laser based weapons/tool tech
    • Also resolved some bugs related to a delay on the hit fx themselves
Other
  • Large ice asteroid tests in the new belt are underway
  • Asset icons were added for the following categories: Attachments, Beams, Decorative Plates, Cargo,
  • Controls, Doors, Lamps, Navigation, Networking, YOLOL, Hardpoints, Ship Weapons
  • Inventory icons were created for Tools and Utilities

The Starbase Boltcrackers Fleet PVP tournament continues!

This video shows the battle between The Simulations and Venus Squadron. This battle includes a huge battleship with a large crew not just manning turrets and using rocket launchers, but also repairing the ship while the battle is ongoing.
