Hello everyone,
The 2025 Steam Awards have begun! Nominations are open, and we’re hoping you’ll support Empires of the Undergrowth by nominating it in the
Labor of Love category.
If you’ve been keeping up with our development updates, you know that we’ve released four updates in the last year, including two major updates and two smaller updates.
At the very end of last year, we brought out the
Remix update - an entirely new way to play Empires of the Undergrowth by mixing and matching almost any colony creature in the game, in almost any level in the game.
The possibilities are practically endless, and the community had a lot of fun doing things like trapjaw ants alongside big-headed ant supersoldiers and termite majors, in one biology-bending colony.

Earlier this year came our
1.1 Update, which remastered a whole bunch of graphical assets and brought them kicking and screaming in to 2025. The rainforest biome got a complete makeover, as did all the leafcutter ants, several creatures, and animations. We’re not done with that either; plenty more of those are on the way.

Alongside 1.1 was the
Exploding Ants DLC, which added not only exploding ants (
Colobopsis explodens) but exploding termites (
Neocapritermes taracua) as well. These species added extra heat to the formicarium and Remix modes, and each one came with its own twist on a rainforest level (The Harvest: Firebreak for the ants, and Front Line: No Ant’s Land for the termites).

(Side note: those species weren’t invented for the game - they really exist! Granted, the explosions may be exaggerated compared to real life, but still - they’re real critters!)
