We're back with another interview with the Alchemist Adventure team!
In our last interview, we spoke with Leo Batelli, the Creative Director and co-founder of Bad Minions (the studio behind Alchemist Adventure). That was a lot of fun, so we're now jumping over to the other co-founder of Bad Minions and the 3D artist for Alchemist Adventure - Felipe Cost!
Hello Felipe Costa, thank you for taking the time to talk with us. What were you doing just before we picked you up for this interview?
Unfortunately nothing that interesting, just paying my bills online. Though, this does mean that the rest of the interview can only get more interesting!
Don’t worry, I’m sure that things will become much more interesting as we dive into who you are and what you do! So to start, can you briefly introduce yourself? Who are you and what do you do for Alchemist Adventure?
So, my name is Felipe and I am a 3D Artist and co-founder of Bad Minions. In Alchemist Adventure, I am responsible for the environment modeling and visual effects, in addition to some things that need art.
Being a 3D artist sounds exciting, to be able to make models that come to life in varying situations is a dream for me! So, why not tell us what it is like to work as a 3D artist for Alchemist Adventure, and do you have any funny stories that you’d like to share from your time working as a 3D artist?
Working on Alchemist Adventure is like a child's dream for me. Since I was a child, I dreamt of being able to work with art and animation, so being part of such an incredible team at Bad Minions is a lifetime achievement.
Memories - well there are so many good memories, But I have one really cool one to share.
We were at the BIG Festival (São Paulo) in 2016 to present the initial project for Alchemist Adventure, and it was the first time that the entire team traveled together. We took a shared room, went to sleep after a tiring day. Leo was so tired that he started to snore making a noise that resembled a kettle and that made everyone in the room laugh out loud. Soon afterward they were all imitating Leo and we kept laughing to the point that some had to lock themselves in the bathroom so as not to make noise and wake the guests in the other rooms. Hahaha! It was really good! And really, that was a fantastic way to build a team - we all shared something unique and it helped us all to bond!
That's quite a unique team-building experience, definitely memorable!
To your job, we know that working as a 3D artist can be quite challenging, but we hear that your background is very different. So, compared to your previous position, what is the biggest difference to your current position with Alchemist Adventure.
Before working with Games, I worked in a Genetics laboratory that specialized in Molecular Biology, as I am a Biologist by graduation. Though, ultimately, I made the decision to drop everything to follow my biggest dream which was to work with art. But that was not an easy journey, in this period I spent more than a year without working and even returned to a Help Desk service job to keep me going. I ended up spending a long time in that place which gave me time to improve myself and go back to studying. In the end, that was time well spent as ultimately it let me do that which I actually dreamt of doing.
So, I can say with all certainty that working at Alchemist Adventure was not only the realization of a great dream but the satisfaction of being able to participate in the creation from the beginning of this wonderful Universe about Alchemy. It was the opportunity, and it continues to be, the way to show off all the internal creative capacities that I have and be able to share this with other creative and spectacular minds.
So Alchemist Adventure was a dream come true. How did you end up discovering Alchemist Adventure?
It all comes back to my interest in subjects related to the scientific area, such as chemistry and other fields.
When we created Bad Minions, Leo and I had the main objective to create a game that we would like to play, and one that would make us think either logically or philosophically.
After some time, we wanted to create a project that could encompass everything we like most in a game. I'm a FAN of "Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood", "Zelda", among others, so this was the opportunity to create a Universe that had a little bit of each reference that we acquired over time. Over time, and with the participation of the entire team in the creative process, Alchemist Adventure was born.
So just like with Leo, this is a passion project as well as being your job, that is truly a fantastic combination. Could you then tell us what your favorite thing is about Alchemist Adventure? Is there any reason why you like this feature in particular?
Certainly - and very easy as well! It is to be able to create my skills through potions in the game, to be able to create new mixtures and to know that that formula is only mine, to feel a little like an alchemist.
Wow, I can almost see the stars in your eyes as you said that. It might be short, but I think we can all feel the passion of your words!. Talking about gaming, what is your favorite gaming genre and platform, and what are you currently playing?
I love adventure and RPG games. But I'm currently only playing Fortnite, which I also stream. I try to mix gameplay and digital art techniques in my streaming.
You’ll have to share your Twitch channel at some point, we’d love to see how you play! Moving outside of gaming, what do you like to do when you’re not working?
Staying at home with my wife and my two kittens (Ron and Hermione). Watch Netflix or Amazon Prime and play with friends. Everyone needs to have downtime, and it’s best that it is different to what you normally do during the day!
Ah, kittens are always great, though for now, we’ve come to the end of our short chat. But, let’s give you this last question! Is there anything you want to share with our readers? Maybe a favorite game no one knows about, or something else?
Play Alchemist Adventure. It was done with great care and heart. I hope you enjoy it.
