The Faroe Islands Are Already in the Game!

In autumn of 2021, you helped us choose the visual style for the new map.

This was followed by long months of preparation and meticulous work. Finally, the Faroe Islands map has been introduced into World of Warships and is ready for battle!

Tiers and Modes
The Faroe Islands map has been designed for battles involving Tier VII–X ships, as well as superships.

It can be found in two game modes: Domination with three Key Areas and Domination with four Key Areas.

Map Appearance
Battles will take place among flowing mountains covered with a thin layer of snow and islands with steep shores. Visually, the map is divided into two parts—the eastern part, covered with snow and ice, and the less snowy center and western part. When creating the map, we were inspired not only by the climate but also by the sights of the Faroe archipelago.

[expand] [/expand]
There are many small crystal-clear icebergs in the snowy part. At the base of the mountain in the southeastern part, you can see waterfalls covered in ice and a small snow-covered settlement. Drangarnir is a large gate-shaped cliff located in the eastern part of the map. Nearby, you can see a small ship in the ice-covered waters.

[expand] [/expand]
Close to that is an island with a high wedge-shaped cliff, which resembles another attraction of the Faroe Islands—Tindhólmur. Take a closer look—you will see a small weather station on top of the cliff.

Move closer to the center and pay attention to the island with numerous geothermal sources from which steam is constantly emitted. In the northwestern part of the map, at the base of another peak, you can find a small settlement with well-groomed green fields. A football field for the town's residents to spend their leisure time is also nearby. In real life, about 20 football stadiums have been built on the territory of the Faroe Islands.

[expand] [/expand]
In total, the map can have three types of weather: early morning, bright sunny day, and thick fog.

How to play

Three Key Areas
We can distinguish three main directions on the Faroe Islands map. Let's consider them on the example of Domination with three Key Areas.
Key Area A
[expand]

The first direction is an area of open water with a range of islands and protruding cape near Key Area A. This direction is a great place for duels and maneuvers for battleships and cruisers that play at long ranges because there is a fairly large area of open water nearby. However, stealthy torpedo destroyers can also successfully operate in this place. The cape serves as a shelter for destroyers and cruisers when capturing the Key Area, and the islands can cover ships from enemy fire from the opposite flank and center of the map.
[/expand]
Key Area B
[expand]

The second direction—and the most notable feature of the map—is the center with Key Area B located between the four islands. This is a kind of arena with clean lines of fire for battles at close range, primarily for destroyers and cruisers that help in capturing. Gently sloping on one side and sheer on the other, the islands at the central Key Area offer an ideal cover and firing position for cruisers with high-arcing shell trajectories.

If you stay around one of the side islands, you'll have clean lines of fire at targets in the opposite part of the Key Area. In this case, the destroyers going to capture the Key Area will be safer on the enemy half of the map. The sheer edges of the side island will protect them from enemy fire. This tactic is still dangerous because the destroyer is not protected from attacks from the side of the islands, but with proper positioning, it's possible to capture a hard and critical Key Area while being practically on the enemy half of the map.
[/expand]
Key Area C
[expand]

The third direction is snow-covered islands with small icebergs and a high wedge-shaped cliff near Key Area C. This direction suits almost all ship types. There is an area of open water for long-range artillery firefights and stealth torpedo attacks. Destroyers will be comfortable among clusters of small icebergs. Battleships are not recommended to sail there. Close-quarters ships can prove themselves near the two largest islands.
[/expand]
Four Key Areas
This variant of Domination has a couple of differences. The first one is the smaller size of the Key Areas. In this mode, the cape in the northwestern part of the map plays a smaller role in the fight for Key Area A.

The second difference is the eastern part of the map, where C and D are home areas for the teams. As a result, the pace and distance of combat in this direction changes significantly. Instead of rapidly capturing one Key Area, teams should try to systematically push through the enemy formations and push them to the flank.

Icebergs and small islands between the Key Areas provide good cover when advancing toward the enemy's home area. Two small islands within the boundaries of both Key Areas are worth a special mention. Under the cover of one of them, ships can start to capture the Key Area or block the opposing team's attempt to capture it.

There are also several small islands in the area where teams spawn on each side. They will serve as excellent cover for aircraft carriers. In general, small islands on the map make it possible to safely move to the flanks without fear of being detected by the enemy. They also allow ships with high-arcing ballistics—primarily cruisers—to effectively rain down fire on large areas of the map and support their allies.

The arena in the center is the most dangerous place on the map. However, it will be very difficult to take Key Area B back if it's captured. Therefore, fighting for this Key Area will be a difficult but important task for destroyers and supporting cruisers. Long-range ships should stick to open water on the flanks, while stealthy and maneuverable destroyers will be comfortable among the iceberg clusters in the eastern part of the map.

Updated Convoy in Update 0.11.5

Update 0.11.5 brings back the Convoy temporary battle type, which tasks you with defending or attacking transport ships as they sail to their destination point.

We've updated the format and diversified the maps, as well as increased the number of transport ships that now move along different routes. We've also revamped the interface and tactical tips in battle, as well as changed the description of the Convoy rules in the battle-type selection window.
In real life, naval battles involved more than squadron duels and air raids. A significant aspect of confrontations between navies involved defending or attacking cargo lanes used to transport strategically important cargo.
Rules
To ensure high-quality matchmaking and contribute to battles being assembled more quickly, Convoy is only available during a certain Prime Time period each day.
Format
12 vs. 12 with Tier VIII–X ships.

Convoy will be available throughout Update 0.11.5.

We've changed some conditions of Convoy to bring more variety to the tactics of both teams and diversify the gameplay in this battle type.

Aircraft carriers, destroyers, cruisers, battleships, and submarines are allowed to participate.

Two teams participate in each battle—one is tasked with escorting cargo ships, and the other is tasked with attacking them. Players are randomly distributed among the two teams. You can enter each battle either alone or as part of a Division of 2—3 players.

The defending team needs to escort convoys of cargo ships as they sail along a defined route. The defending team wins if at least one of the convoy ships reaches the destination point or the entire enemy team is sent back to Port. The mission of the attacking team is to completely destroy either the convoys or its defenders.

[expand] [/expand]
In total, there are six AI-controlled transport ships in each battle. Depending on the map, transport ships will be split into three convoys of two ships or two convoys of three ships.
  • Each convoy moves along its own route.
  • Each route has its own destination. The destination points may be the same or different.
  • The convoy's route is visible to both teams on the Minimap.
  • The numbering of routes is tied to their travel time—the higher the number, the longer the duration of the route.
All convoys are made up of Liberty-class transport ships. They have little HP and weak armor, but they can deploy smoke screens, as well as change speed and maneuver to dodge enemy torpedoes. In addition, the transport ships are armed with two main battery guns and twelve secondary battery guns capable of firing at approaching enemies.

Due to the specifics of the battle type, you can only earn these achievements in Convoy.
