Head Over Keels: Unsinkable Sam

It wasn't unusual for animals to act as ships' mascots and endure the hardships of naval service together with their crews.

But very few can boast of such an impressive service record and luck as Unsinkable Sam. This black and white feline successfully survived the sinking of three ships: German battleship Bismarck, British destroyer Cossack, and aircraft carrier Ark Royal. Let's go back to that good old "Head Over Keels" episode in which we explored his story.
https://youtu.be/idKSwn5UiIs
VIII Bismarck, VIII Cossack, and VI Ark Royal got two camouflages each: one historical, demonstrating the ships' exteriors during the time when Sam "served" onboard; the other depicting the legendary feline's portrait on a ship's side.

The camouflage patterns share the same features:
  • –3% to detectability range by sea
  • +4% to dispersion of shells fired by the enemy attacking your ship
  • −10% to the cost of a ship's post-battle service
  • +50% XP earned per battle.

It’s possible to obtain these camouflages from Unsinkable Sam containers, along with ships. You can also obtain them for completing a chain of combat missions or by purchasing them together with VI Ark Royal and VIII Cossack in the Premium Shop.

Unsinkable Sam

Unsinkable Sam is such a cool cat that he’s been given the honor of ushering in the first Premium Tier VI aircraft carrier, VI Ark Royal—a ship of no less acclaim than Sam himself!

Drop into the Premium Shop for some special bundles that include VI Ark Royal and VIII Cossack. Each of the ships comes with a commemorative flag, various game items, and two new permanent camouflage patterns. One of them displays the exteriors of the ships at the times when Unsinkable Sam was onboard them, while the other proudly displays a portrait of the mascot himself. You can also obtain a large bundle that includes VI Ark Royal and VIII Cossack at a bargain price, the researchable juggernaut VIII Bismarck, two permanent camouflage patterns for each of the ships, and a lavish amount of game items.
Bundles are available for purchase until Fri. 18 Oct. 07:00 CEST (UTC+2)

Details
Ark Royal
VI Ark Royal was the first British aircraft carrier on which the hangars and flight deck were integral parts of the hull, instead of an additions or parts of the superstructure. The carrier was instrumental in the destruction of the German juggernaut, Bismarck; participated in the Norwegian campaign; and escorted British convoys bound for Malta. In World of Warships, Ark Royal has been recreated as the first Premium Tier VI aircraft carrier. The ship boasts a large air group with a fast aircraft restoration time.

Key features:
  • Larger squadrons and attack flights compared with other Tier VI carriers. She can have as many as nine bombers, attack aircraft or torpedo bombers airborne and attacking a target, with strike groups of three aircraft each
  • Fast aircraft-restoration time: 48 seconds for attack aircraft, 56 seconds for bombers, and 59 seconds for torpedo bombers
  • In terms of their individual characteristics, Ark Royal's aircraft are somewhat inferior to aircraft used by other Tier VI carriers
  • She earns more credits per battle, and has a permanent camouflage that adds a 50% XP bonus per battle and reduces the cost of your ship's post-battle service by 10%

For a detailed look at the ship's technical specifications, follow this link.

Bismarck
VIII Bismarck stands as one of the most famous warships of Germany. During her only operation, Bismarck sank the British battlecruiser, Hood, only to perish some time later as the result of several attacks mounted by overwhelming Royal Navy forces. In World of Warships, Bismarck is placed at Tier VIII. The ship comes with all modules fully researched.

Key features:
  • Good durability and armor protection—a defining feature of German battleships
  • This ship wields guns of a smaller caliber (380 mm) compared to those of other same-tier battleships, but her main battery has a faster reload time
  • Noteworthy secondary battery complement with a 7.5 km standard range
  • The Hydroacoustic Search consumable—am atypical feature for battleships—with a maximum acquisition range of 5 km for ships and 3.5 km for torpedoes

For a detailed look at the ship's technical specifications, follow this link.

Cossack
VIII Cossack is one of the famous Tribal-class destroyers—an artillery-focused ship carrying a significant number of main guns, but only armed with a single torpedo launcher. She is remarkable for being able to deliver a powerful salvo and for having a wide variety of consumables to select from. She also has quite good speed and boasts excellent maneuverability. As is typical of British ships, Cossack has short-lived smoke screens that reload pretty fast, and is equipped with the Hydroacoustic Search consumable that helps her to effectively detect enemy torpedoes. Cossack favors dynamic encounters and always being on the attacking end—she excels in mid- and short-range fights.

Key features:
  • Eight 120 mm guns: reload time—5 seconds; firing range—11.9 km
  • Smoke screens typical of the U.K. nation: the setting time is just 10 seconds and dispersion time—40 seconds. However, the enhanced version of this consumable has a reload time of just 70 seconds, allowing this destroyer to set smoke screens more often than its counterparts of other nations
  • She possesses another feature that is typical of British ships: increased speed dynamics during acceleration
  • In addition to the Smoke Generator consumable, the ship has Engine Boost and Hydroacoustic Search placed in different slots
  • The ship comes with four torpedoes in her launcher but they can be fired independently and have a reload time of only 66 seconds
  • She earns more credits per battle, and a has a permanent camouflage that brings a 50% XP bonus per battle and reduces the cost of the ship's post-battle service by 10%

Sound Changes

With update 0.8.8 we improved most of the sound environment in the game. Unfortunately, not everything went smoothly, and with the change, a few bugs crept in. In 0.8.8.1 we will fix these sound bugs so that you can enjoy the roar of the guns again.

List of fixes:
  • Fixed an error that caused the message about the destruction of a ship to be repeated if a unique commander is assigned to the player's ship;
  • Fixed a bug that caused incorrect functioning of the sound settings.
  • Fixed an error that caused the engine start sound to playback after closing the tactical map;
  • Fixed a bug that caused AA defense and secondaries sounds to incorrectly play whilst controlling a squadron;
  • Fixed a bug causing incorrect functioning of the Azur Lane audio modification.
  • Changes in the transmission of sound through space of enemy and friendly shots. The sounds of the shots will now play correctly depending on the distance of the sound source;
  • The volume of the fire alarm has been reduced;
  • The sound of the ship's horns has been adjusted;
  • Adjusted the sound for voice announcements about hits when using the artillery camera to track shells;
Sound Adjustment Tips

If you want to customize the music and sounds according to your preferences, we'd like to give you some tips on how to do it better.

The main volume sliders are located on the left side of the Audio settings window:
  • General volume level - manages all sound in the game;
  • SFX volume - manages all sounds except music and voice messages.

There are several sliders on the right side of the Audio settings window for "fine-tuning" the sound.
  • Gunfire volume - in the range from 100% to 50% adjusts the volume of your ship's shots, and in the range from 50% to 0% adjusts the volume of all shots in the game. This slider also adjusts the hit volume;
  • Engine sounds - in the range of 100% to 80% regulates the volume of "low-frequency knocking" in the engine sound. In the range of 80% to 0% adjusts the overall volume of the engines.

In order to adjust the sound perfectly, you should start with the General volume and SFX volume, and then adjust it in detail with the other sliders.

Please note: if the volume level is reduced to a minimum, it is possible that a category of sound will be muted because very quiet sounds are not a priority for the game sound system.

We also advise you to pay attention to the parameter "Wide dynamic range". This option is enabled for all players by default. Turning it off will minimize the difference in volume between the loudest and the quietest sounds in the game.

We recommend you disable this setting in the following cases:
  • If you are using a laptop or other device with built-in speakers;
  • If you don't think the sound in the game is balanced enough, even after "fine-tuning" the volume.

When disabling this option, be sure to set the sliders on the right side of the settings menu to maximum volume.

Additional Bug Fixes
  • Ohio:  Reload time of main caliber guns lowered from 30 to 27.5 s.
We will continue to monitor the sound in our game and fix possible bugs. We will also be glad to hear your feedback.

Thus, you can skip four days out of two weeks and still claim all the valuable rewards.

Visual and Audio Enhancements

Several maps and Ports have been updated to utilize the reworked lighting model. In Update 0.8.8, we've enhanced the following maps: Ocean, Big Race, North, Fault Line, Polar, and Islands, as well as the Philippines Port. The skies on these maps have been completely changed, too, in order to accommodate enhanced HDR technology that will add more contrast to the game’s graphics and create a more realistic look. Clouds drifting across the sky on the reworked maps will now cast shadows on the water’s surface, ships, and terrain. In forthcoming updates, we’re going to continue tweaking the game content to accommodate the new lighting system.

Apart from graphics, we've added enhancements to the audio system as well. In the new update, we’ve reworked the principles for sound reproduction:
  • Introduction of a system of priorities and restrictions affecting the reproduction of sounds.
  • Gunfire sounds have been "standardized," depending on the number of guns firing and their caliber.
  • Engines will now produce different sound patterns depending on their power.
  • New sounds and music have been added.
  • Ambient sounds have been enhanced.
  • Greater stability and the fixing of certain issues that affected the audio system’s performance.

This change will apply to all sounds in the game, which might make them seem unusual at first. We’ll continue to enhance the sounds and sound reproduction system in the game.

Armory

A new 25% discount coupon will be added to the Armory. This coupon can be applied to ships available for doubloons, and will work exactly like any other coupons in the game. Please note: you can use the coupon in the Armory only—it cannot be applied to any of the ships in the Tech Tree.

With the release of Update 0.8.8, Republic Tokens will be converted into credits at a rate of 1 : 12,000.

French Tokens and the Legion of Honor section of the Armory will be available until the release of Update 0.8.9. When Update 0.8.9 hits the servers, French Tokens will be converted to credits at a rate of 1 : 4,500.

New ships
British battleship X Thunderer—available for 252,000 Coal.

Essentially, X Thunderer is an alternative design of the post-war British battleship, Conqueror, equipped with 457 mm main battery guns. In World of Warships, this ship is placed at Tier X. Unlike her researchable “sister ship”, Thunderer boasts a larger caliber, greater damage and improved firing accuracy, combined with a shorter reload time, but fewer guns at her disposal. To add to that, Thunderer has a faster rudder shift time. The ship's Repair Party consumable is not as effective as that of Conqueror, but comes with one extra charge.

Key features
  • Eight 457 mm main guns with good accuracy, very high damage caused by their AP and HE shells, and a relatively fast reload time.
  • Decent speed and maneuverability compared to ships of her type and tier.
  • Her relatively weak armor protection is compensated for by lower detectability than her same-tier counterparts.

Players thoroughly enjoyed the 419 mm guns on Conqueror because of the high damage per minute that her HE shells could cause—a feature that perfectly matches the other operational capabilities of the ship. Instead of doing the same with the 457 mm guns, we've decided to mount them on Thunderer where these large-caliber guns will play a key role in shaping the ship's specific gameplay. For that reason, the 457 mm/45 Mk II guns will no longer be available on Conqueror. If you’ve already researched these guns, you’ll get 35,000 Free XP. If you’ve already purchased them, you'll get 2,500,000 credits. If you had those guns placed on the battleship, they will be replaced with the 419 mm/45 Mk II guns, even if you don't have them in your Inventory.

American battleship X Ohio—available for 62,000 Research Points.
X Ohio is a project of an American battleship, a further development of the ideas embodied in Georgia. The ship carries eight 457 mm guns and has a strong secondary battery. In World of Warships, Ohio is placed at Tier X.

Key features
  • Eight 457 mm guns that are capable of dealing significant damage with their AP shells.
  • Her powerful and accurate secondary armament makes her an effective fighter at short and medium ranges. Having applied the appropriate upgrades, Commander skills, and signal flags, the range of her secondary armament can be increased to 11.3 km.
  • The ship has decent armor, and anti-torpedo protection that reduces the damage from any torpedoes which hit the ship by 37%.
  • The Repair Party consumable has a shorter cooldown time (you can also obtain the enhanced version, which has a cooldown of just 40 seconds).

Content Additions and Changes
Camouflage patterns
VIII Bismarck, VIII Cossack, and VI Ark Royal had something in common: all of them were once the “place of duty” for Unsinkable Sam, one of the most famous seafaring mascots in history. Each of the ships gets two camouflage patterns: one historical, displaying the ships' exteriors as they were at the time when Sam “served” onboard each of them; the other depicting the legendary feline's portrait on the ships’ sides.
The camouflage patterns share the same features:
  • −3% to the ship's detectability range by sea
  • +4% to the dispersion of shells fired by the enemy at your ship
  • −10% to the cost of the ship's post-battle service
  • +50% XP per battle
All details on how to get the camouflages will appear on our website. You can access a video about the legendary cat via this link.
Ships
IX Mogador and X Kléber are now available to research.

The following Premium ships have been removed from the Tech Tree screen: VII Z-39, VII Scharnhorst, VI Warspite, VII Hood, VII Sims, VII Indianapolis, VIII Kidd, VIII Alabama, VI Mutsu, VII Ashitaka, VIII Asashio, V Okhotnik, V Oktyabrskaya Revolutsiya, VI Molotov, VII Leningrad, VI Dunkerque, VI De Grasse, and VI Huanghe. All these ships are now available for doubloons in the Armory.
The following Premium ships will appear in the Tech Tree screen: III Dreadnought, VIII Vanguard, VIII Massachusetts, VIII Lenin, and VI Aigle. These ships are also available in the Armory. By doing this, we reduce the number of ships in the Tech Tree, making it look neat and tidy in light of the user interface improvements that were introduced in Update 0.8.7.
Other Changes and Improvements
  • The context menu of the Port chat, available by right-clicking on a message, will now offer a new option: “Report violation in chat.”
  • Reworked the animation of the Service Record banner in the Port.
  • The animations of items in banners in the Port have been reworked, too.
  • Reworked the behavior of pop-up windows to prevent them from opening all at once.
  • Revised the descriptions of Commander skills, upgrades, and signals that could influence AA bursts, by removing all mentions of bursts in the medium-range AA zone.
  • The AA Defense Expert achievement can now be earned with all ship types. We’ve simplified the conditions for this achievement: to obtain it, players now just need to bring down 35 aircraft of any type.
  • The Liquidator achievement will no longer be available. But all previously earned achievements will remain on players' accounts.
  • Added towns on islands in the Crash Zone Alpha map.
  • Fixed a number of minor issues on the Estuary map. The issues related to collisions with objects and islands.
  • Fixed a number of minor issues in the Port of Dunkirk.
  • Fixed an issue which caused the engine-order telegraph to switch to the “Stop” position after setting waypoints for the autopilot for the first time in a battle.
  • Fixed an issue where X Montana, IX Saint-Louis, X Yoshino, and V New York were able to fire further than their viewing range.
  • Updated the pop-up hints for the description of Philippe Auboyneau’s talents.
  • Fixed an issue which prevented the end date for a discount for resetting Commander skills from being displayed.
  • After reaching Rank 1, players will no longer see the “Battle on!” button on the post-battle statistics screen.
  • Fixed the display of 25 mm triple AA guns when the Octopus, Rover, and Zaya camouflage patterns are applied.
  • Fixed an issue which, after navigating to the "Flags" tab, positioned the camera in such a way that it was impossible to view any flags hoisted on a ship.
  • Fixed an issue which caused a pop-up hint indicating the availability of a new ship in the Tech Tree to detach from that ship.
  • Fixed an issue which caused visual artifacts to appear on the Trap map while in Spectator mode.
  • III Vampire, VI New Mexico, and III Campbeltown: fixed an issue which caused a mismatch between the designation of armament in the Modules tab and its designation in the ships' listed performance characteristics.
  • V Furutaka: fixed an issue which caused the firing accuracy of Hull С’s guns to be inferior to the guns of Hulls A and B.
  • Fixed an issue which prevented a ship's autopilot from getting the ship back on course after a collision with an island.
  • Fixed an issue which didn't display fighter aircraft as a threat to an operating airborne squadron, or, alternatively, caused the threat to be displayed on the wrong side.
  • Added an option to view the Rating of Clans separately for each region.
  • In the WGC, a new feature—Generate a WGCheck report—is now available in the pop-up list of the game client launch options.

Armada: Friesland

Welcome aboard Friesland, Captain!

This ship became the lead ship of the second post-war series of destroyers in the Royal Netherlands Navy. She was officially classified as a submarine hunter (onderzeebootjager), but was so close to contemporary destroyers in terms of her specifications that both allies and potential opponents of the Netherlands used this designation. Friesland served in the Navy for more than 20 years and took part in a number of important diplomatic missions. Now you have the opportunity to take command of this famous ship!

History

After World War II, the Netherlands had to rebuild their Navy from scratch. In 1948, twelve Holland-class destroyers were ordered: six were to be finished by 1952 and six more—between 1953–1955. However, the country’s industry still hadn't recovered from the war and failed to complete the order. As a result, only four destroyers of this class were laid down between 1950–1951, and built by 1955. The engineers working on the ships were able to use some main power plants which had been produced for four pre-war destroyers in 1940, and which had sat unused gathering dust in storage during the German occupation. The eight ships that followed were built according to a modified project with another type of power plant. They became the Friesland-class destroyers. In the autumn of 1948, the Shipbuilding Bureau (Bureau Scheepsbouw) of the Naval Ministry developed an improved project—Submarine Hunter 1949.

Just like the preceding Holland class, the Friesland-class destroyers didn't carry any torpedoes. However, despite being similar on the outside, the new ships were faster and carried a more powerful armament. Foreign components and approaches were widely implemented—the main power plant was constructed by a U.S. license, their turbines were similar to those of the Gearing class, and all the artillery was developed by the Swedish company Bofors.

On December 17, 1951, the first ship of the new project was laid down at the NDSM shipyard in Amsterdam—HNLMS Friesland. She was commissioned on March 22, 1956. The new ship was named after the Netherlands province, Friesland. Just like same-class ships, the new destroyer became the Navy's work horse.

In July 1956, Friesland, together with cruiser HNLMS De Zeven Provinciën and destroyer HNLMS Zeeland, sailed off on an important diplomatic mission. It was the first time since 1914 that Dutch ships went on an official visit to Russia. The Netherlands delegation was to visit Leningrad.

For post-war Dutch sailors, the Soviet Union was no less mysterious than the New World for their forefathers. However, a cordial and solemn reception awaited the Netherlands ships, first in Kronstadt and then in Leningrad. The residents of Leningrad and the Dutch sailors quickly found a common language, albeit with the help of translators.

Having completed her diplomatic duty, Friesland set out to defend the interests of the Netherlands in the Caribbean, and especially in the Southeast Asia. The former Dutch colony Indonesia was contesting the ownership of the western part of New Guinea island, which was under the control of the Netherlands. Indonesia was preparing a military operation with technical support from the U.S.S.R., and because of the dispute, the Netherlands Navy was growing its presence in the region. In 1962, the situation escalated to combat engagements, and in the course of one of them, Dutch destroyers sank a torpedo boat. Friesland wasn't directly involved in any fire exchanges, but her presence disrupted an Indonesian attempt to land troops on Misool island near the western coast of New Guinea.

The remainder of Friesland’s service was uneventful. Between 1980–1982, seven of Friesland-class destroyers were decommissioned from the Dutch Navy and sold to Peru. This South American state bought seven out of eight destroyers, except for the lead ship. On June 29, 1979, Friesland was decommissioned and subsequently scrapped.

Modeling the Ship
During our work to bring Dutch destroyer Friesland to the game, we used historical photos such as blue prints. This would only have been possible with the help of The Netherlands Institute of Military History who kindly provided incredibly detailed photos of Friesland which helped us create historically accurate 3D models. We greatly appreciate all the help and assistance from our new Dutch friends, as without them we would have had great difficulty recreating Friesland to the quality and standards World of Warships is known for.

Dual-purpose battery: two twin dual-purpose mounts with 120 mm/50 Bofors guns.

Anti-aircraft armament: six 40-mm/70 Bofors SP48 anti-aircraft guns.

Friesland in Combat
IX Friesland is the lead ship of the second post-war series of destroyers in the Royal Netherlands Navy. In 1956, the ship made a formal visit to Leningrad, and in 1962, she took part in the West New Guinea dispute between the Netherlands and Indonesia. In World of Warships, this destroyer represents Europe and is placed at Tier IX. In contrast to other destroyers, Friesland doesn’t carry any torpedo armament. However, this is completely compensated for by her rapid-firing artillery, decent AA defenses, and a good choice of consumables.

Key features
  • Four main battery guns with a very high rate of fire (reload time of 1.8 seconds without upgrades mounted or Commander skills mastered), good shell ballistics, comfortable aiming angles, and a high traverse speed of the main turrets.
  • The AA defenses are additionally reinforced with the Defensive AA Fire consumable in a separate slot.
  • The Smoke Generator consumable with features that are characteristic of American destroyers: her smoke screens will last longer than 2 minutes. The Hydroacoustic Search consumable, which comes in a separate slot, will allow you to assuredly detect enemy ships at distances of up to 5 km, and enemy torpedoes—at 3.5 km.
  • The absence of torpedo armament is compensated for by a wide variety of consumables and efficient artillery.
  • Extra credits per battle, as well as 100% more XP and –20% to the cost of the ship's post-battle service are provided by her permanent camouflage.
