UPDATE: Helldivers 2's controversial balancing changes look to have caused a rift between its community and devs

UPDATE(7 March, 3:00PM GMT): Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt has since addressed this issue via Reddit, writing: "Thank you for bringing this up, this is not the intention from the studio perspective. But since I am a heavy subscriber of a communicative studio it means that I encourage developers to engage with the community. However this also exposes us to risks of miscommunication or heated arguments and it's something that we actively discuss internally at the studio to improve on." He added: "As for the balance patch and the opinions surrounding it, we actively read as much as we possibly can and take what is said into consideration when we discuss things internally."

While Helldivers 2’s community has earned a lot of positive attention following the game’s release - mainly due to the fun folks have been having roleplaying as defenders of democracy. However, some of the balancing changes and nerfs deployed by Arrowhead yesterday seem to have brought out a side to some members of the game’s community that kinda sucks to see.

If you’re out of the loop, the arrival of yesterday’s patch - which also included the addition of new planetary hazards - came with some key changes designed to to help balance the game a little better. Arrowhead have released a new Helldivers 2 update - patch 01.000.100 - which designer Alex K describes as "the first round in a never-ending series of balance changes". The patch nerfs three of what were hitherto the best Helldivers 2 guns and gear pieces - the SG-225 Breaker shotgun, the RS-422 railgun, and the SH-32 shield generator backpack, all of which break Arrowhead's pretty straightforward golden rule that "each gun has its purpose and none is strictly better than another".

Well, by giving you spreadsheet lovers a bit of info on the studio’s current approach to balancing weapons - complete with the exact numbers for this latest round of gun tweaks.

So yeah, you can stop asking Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt why the game isn’t serving you up nine million different stats to help you decide exactly which of the two shotguns you’re trying to choose between - like Mr Burns with the ketchup in that Simpsons episode - is marginally better. Congrats, dweebs.

If you’re too much of smartpants for your own good, you’ll want to head over to the official Helldivers 2 Discord server, where designer Alex K has had a go at outlining what the studio’s current approach to weapon balancing is and what it’s designed to achieve. “Our goal is to give you a wide range of weapon choices, where each gun has its purpose and none is strictly better than another,” the dev outlined.
