Turns out you have Helldivers 2 to thank for Arc Raiders moving away from a free-to-play model

A few years ago, it would have been pretty easy to imagine Helldivers 2 releasing as a free-to-play game. It is a live service game after all, most of those are free-to-play because studios want to reduce the barrier to entry. Instead, it launched as a paid-for, $40 game, a far cry from free, but not the $80-$100 releases we're seeing more and more of. And it's because Arrowhead made the decision to do so that Arc Raiders developer Embark did the exact same thing for their own shooter.

Helldivers 2's Killzone crossover gear is returning via warbond, a year on from causing pricing controversy

Around this time last year, Helldivers 2 was being filled with squishy squids. These squishy squids have since come close to squishing Super Earth.

Also being squished in late 2024 were some players' positive perceptions of Arrowhead's gear pricing, as a Killzone crossover arrived and was so throughly panned for being expensive that the studio ended up giving the last bit of it away for free as a make-good.

Nothing angers me more than an illogical, out-of-place videogame crossover - as a long-suffering Call of Duty fan, I've got my fair share of scars from this already. However, a genuinely great crossover, where the tone and aesthetics match up to great effect, always fills me with joy. The Helldivers 2 Killzone crossover last year was meant to be just that - weapons and armor sets that celebrate Guerrilla Game's shooter series while fitting into the galactic battles of Arrowhead's excellent co-op game. However, the limited-time Killzone set ended up being shrouded in controversy before disappearing into the ether. Now, 12 months on, it's returning, and it'll be sticking around for good.
