HELLDIVERS™ 2 News

Helldivers 2's long-awaited Illuminate faction finally shows up on the map before quickly disappearing, or did they?

Remember the Illuminate? Those alien lads from the first Helldivers that everyone was convinced would come rushing into Helldivers 2 through that black hole the forces of Super Earth turned Meridia into a few months ago. Well, it looks like they’ve just briefly made a cameo on the game’s map.

As spotted by players on Reddit, a section of the lower portion of the Galactic map briefly turned purple yesterday, suggesting that it was under the control of force which wasn’t the Automatons or the Terminids, before returning to normal.

Naturally, folks could only come to one conclusion - the Illuminate popped in, and they’re apparently fans of hide and seek. Especially since at least one of the occupied sectors looks to have shown what looks a lot like the Illuminate’s logo when highlighted.

Helldivers 2 map briefly teases its long-awaited Illuminate faction

During both its stratospheric highs and its recent wobbles, Helldivers 2 has been dangling the carrot of a third enemy faction in front of players for a while. I definitely expected the Illuminate to be here by now, but they're currently nowhere to be found. However, in the midst of Arrowhead Game Studios' 60-day plan to get Helldivers 2 back on track, a blink-and-you'll-miss-it tease for the Illuminate appeared on the space shooter's galactic map.

As Arrowhead unleashes a "massive Terminid outbreak", Helldivers 2's napalm barrageless legions cite low morale as a factor in their latest defeat

Sit down. I've got bad news. Helldivers 2's most recent Major Order, the one about collecting plastic so you could unleash some napalm barrages, well, folks have come up short in it. As they now get started on the fresh mission Arrowhead's just put in motion, some members of the player base have been busy dicussing why they think the quest to set stuff on fire from orbit ended in defeat.

The main conclusion they've come to so far? Well, aside from the long-established pet peeve of some players refusing to deviate from battling the bugs to take on an Automaton front MO with their brethren, the big reasons being cited probably won't be a surprise if you've been keeping up with the community over the last little while.

In addition to plenty of players arguining that they'd started to see the napalm barrages as a lost cause long before it officially failed, despite the collective effort still managing to get decently close to completing it, looking through someReddit threads discussing the defeat, you'll find lots of players pointing to the ongoing unhappiness about the Escalation of Freedom update's nerfs and generally lower player numbers due to "general frustrations".
