Beware fake Helldivers 2 pages on Steam promising steep discounts

It's a tale as old as time: when a great, popular game rises to the top of the Steam charts, scammers and chancers will do everything in their power to steal some of that glory for themselves. The latest victim is Helldivers 2, with scammers putting up two separate fake pages for it on Steam over the last 24 hours. Each page listed Arrowhead as the developer, and PlayStation as the publisher, along with big discounts of 50-75% off to tempt players into buying the cheap version instead of the real one.

What’s the best gun in Helldivers 2? Good news, you can stop desperately testing every hand-cannon the game has to offer, because Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt has revealed that all of your efforts are actually pretty pointless.

Yep, no matter how keen you are to maximise your firepower the next time you jump into a battle as dangerous as those fought over Malevelon Creek and Mort earlier this week, don’t start comparing numbers with your mates. I repeat, DO NOT slam open a great big spreadsheet and start inputting things like damage values in a manner your maths teacher might be proud of, soldier!

If you were awake in early this morning, you may have seen that Helldivers 2 was having a massive Steam sale. This was, in fact, an imposter. Another game in disguise, which was promptly delisted from the storefront after changing its name, key art, and developer information to mimic the popular sci-fi shooter.

According to SteamDB - a third party website in which ample information of Steam games can be viewed - the events that led up to this conclusion can be clearly seen. At 9:55PM ET, indie game Figurality had its name changed to Helldivers 2. Mere minutes before, the publisher and developer listed was changed to PlayStation PC LLC and Arrowhead Game Studios respectively.

Around the same time, the game's description was changed to mimic the official Helldivers 2 store page. The tags were changed, as were screenshots, trailers, assets and assosiations. Even an epilepsy disclaimer was added - paired with Sony and Arrowhead Legal info of course. It was here that a whopping 75% sale on the game was added.

As Automaton armies and Terminid throngs continue their wicked war against the forces of Super Earth, the use of Helldivers 2 stratagems to protect our way of life is an absolute must. This can prove more difficult on Steam Deck than other platforms due to spotty performance hampering smooth inputs, but one citizen has devised a clever trick using trackpads to make the process smoother.
