PUBG dev is trying to build NPCs "barely distinguishable" from real people

Developer Krafton is still hard at work creating new PUBG Battlegrounds content, especially now that the battle royale has gone free-to-play at last, and now it's also trying to create "virtual humans" - animated NPCs who are "barely distinguishable" from real human actors, using artificial intelligence and the Unreal engine.

Krafton has announced that it is working on building the technology to create CGI actors that are as close as possible to real people, which it dubs "virtual humans". The developer states that these CGI actors will be "able to convey deeply-expressive and nuanced emotions" with the aim of using "hyper-realism technology to create a digital character barely distinguishable from the real world".

This technology would be used for "a variety of projects", which includes PUBG Battlegrounds and presumably will also involve Krafton's other titles, including the upcoming horror game The Callisto Protocol. The developer specifically notes that it is looking to create "game characters, esports, and virtual influencers/entertainers", and is even aiming for players to be able to directly speak with these NPCs in the future.

PUBG had more EU PS4 and PS5 downloads than Fortnite last month

2022 is shaping up to be a fantastic year for PlayStation fans with several major releases coming in the next few weeks. However, gaming on PlayStation is already great thanks to a fantastic selection of free-to-play titles on both the PS4 and PS5. Shockingly, PUBG: Battlegrounds has shot to the top of PlayStation's top free-to-play games list for January 2022 despite only going free-to-play on January 12.

It has managed to beat Epic Games' hugely popular Fortnite in the EU region and sits in a close second in the US-Canada region. With Fortnite regarded as one of the most popular free-to-play games out there, seeing PUBG topple Fortnite is proof that going free-to-play was the right move for the battle royale.

This isn't the only new game to shoot up to the top end of the list, though. Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel was released on January 18 and sits comfortably third in both regions. This could be a sign that PlayStation players are looking for more variety when it comes to free-to-play games on the platform.

PUBG studio to use NFTs in 'UGC-driven open metaverse,' whatever that means

pparently unphased by the backlash to recent NFT project announcements, Playerunknown's Battlegrounds studio Krafton has announced that it is getting into the NFT game. The company has signed a deal with Naver Z, the operator of the metaverse platform Zepeto, "to develop a new Web 3.0 and non-fungible token (NFT) project aimed at building an NFT metaverse platform."..

PUBG is getting another anti-cheat update

Krafton is working on more anti-cheat updates for PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds - technically now called PUBG: Battlegrounds, but, y'know, old habits die hard. The latest tweaks are being trialled on the test server for the battle royale game's 16.1 update, so they could be out soon enough.

The anti-cheat update targets a "commonly reported cheat software" called ESP that allows users to see other players' locations. "To prevent possible issues such as enemy movements appearing awkward from afar to severely shaking character animations to spectating from underwater from occurring, the death cam and replay features in this update's test server will be disabled," the devs explain. "Once this solution is concluded to be stable and safe to use, we will discuss implementing them to the live server."

PUBG is also getting some decent changes to weapon balancing. The devs have noticed that the Beryl M762 and the SLR have become popular, though they don't want to "stress" players out more by "nerfing well-used weapons", so they're going to buff less-used ones instead. The M416's stats are coming back up, and the Mk12 is being buffed, too.
