Dead Cells dev says its controversial sunsetting was "a good thing"

October 27, 2025: We've changed the headline of this story to better reflect developer MotionTwin's quote.

Dead Cells is a phenomenal game, a mighty feat of mechanical precision and environmental storytelling that captured the hearts of players across the world. Surpassing its reputation as one of the best roguelikes ever, it's regarded as one of the best PC games full stop. It's welcomed millions of players, boasts 97% positive feedback on Steam, and has been garnished with DLC for years after its release. However, further development was stopped last year, so we sat down with two developers from Motion Twin to find out why the studio left it behind.

Dead Cells studio opted to make a new game despite 'super strong' pressure for a sequel because 'we are driven by what we want to make'

Dead Cells, released in 2018, is one of the best roguelikes ever—"a stellar action platformer with gorgeous presentation and excellent combat," we said in our 90% review, a reputation that only grew over seven years of further development, 35 updates, and a whole spin-off studio. You might think that Dead Cells 2 would inevitably follow, but no: Developer Motion Twin instead opted to go for an entirely new game called Windblown...

Dead Cells 2 doesn't exist because its devs would rather make what they want than listen to external pressures

Sequels! More often than not, they're completely unnecessary, but until we're at a point where we don't have to bow to the whims of the free market, studios of all sizes will likely continue to push them out. Right now people like familiarity, there's a risk in paying for something new. What if the thing you're buying is a waste of what little money you have?
