Dead Cells teases latest DLC The Queen And The Sea in short but spooky trailer

If you weren’t satisfied with only three DLC packs to play with in the hybrid metroidvania roguelike Dead Cells, don’t worry. The teams over at Motion Twin and Evil Empire have got your back. The latest DLC, The Queen And The Sea, has been teased with a tiny new trailer.

The Queen And The Sea is currently planned for a release early next year. It's described as the largest update to Dead Cells yet, and is designed as an ending to the route started by the two previous DLCs (The Bad Seed and Fatal Falls). I think it’s going for more of a The Lighthouse vibe, and not so much The Little Mermaid. You can take a look at the new teaser trailer below.

Explore a forlorn coastline in Dead Cells' upcoming DLC

Even if you're not a fan of the roguelite Metroidvania slashy platformer Dead Cells, it's hard not to admire the studio's approach to, well, everything. Since coming out of Early Access in 2018, the game has grown immeasurably with huge free updates and cheerfully cheap paid DLC. Oh, and developer Motion Twin has an equal pay system, describing itself as an "anarcho-syndicalist workers' cooperative"—a rarity in an often overly hierarchical industry...

Roguelike Metroidvania Dead Cells is getting "at least another year" of free updates

Dead Cells has been among the best efforts to combine the exploration of Metroidvanias with the replayability of roguelike games, and the developers have continued supporting it with a combination of free updates and paid DLC for years since its exit from Early Access. The devs aren't finished, either, as they've just detailed a new DLC pack and confirmed that another year of updates is coming.

The Queen and the Sea is the next DLC pack for Dead Cells, and is scheduled to launch in the first quarter of 2022 at the usual price of $4.99 / £4.49 / €4.99. It'll bring a new ending to the game, concluding "the path started with The Bad Seed and Fatal Falls", and it'll feature two new biomes with the Infested Shipwreck and the Lighthouse, which will be in parallel to High Peak Castle and the Throne Room.

The devs at Motion Twin say that the DLC will help fund their next project and continued Dead Cells updates. After the DLC launches, they'll be "releasing more free stuff! And we'll continue to do that for at least another year. There's already a good chunk of content planned and being worked on right now with some fresh ideas in play, so you shouldn't be getting bored with us anytime soon."

TLDR
  • New DLC coming Q1 2022 - wishlist it here and we'll love you forever!
  • Teaser trailer out now on YouTube, check it out below
  • DLC will be $4.99 to fund continued Dead Cells development & Motion Twin project
  • It finishes the path started with The Bad Seed and Fatal Falls, giving a new ending to the game
  • Free updates will continue until the end of time, well for another year at the very least

Hey everyone,

We’re pumped to announce that our latest DLC “The Queen & the Sea” will be coming Q1 2022!

The route that we started so long ago with The Bad Seed and Fatal Falls will be neatly tied off with a slightly unconventional bow. The usual two new biomes will be there, but one of them is definitely not the standard-issue Dead Cells level that you know and love...

Of course there’s also a deadly boss waiting for you at the end of the road – no prizes for guessing who that is! Oh, and if you beat them you'll be getting a whole new ending.

The two new biomes are called the Infested Shipwreck and the Lighthouse - these will be a parallel to the High Peak Castle and Throne Room levels. Yep, the Hand of the King won’t be the only final challenger anymore. Before you jump on me I know the spoiler boss exists as well!

There's a couple of screenshots below to give you a taste of what's coming, and if you could wishlist the DLC for us we would be eternally grateful :)

Yes, the Beheaded is wielding a shark. No questions please.

These guys are as deadly as they look, so prepare your thumbs!

The final arena...

There’ll be new weapons & enemies to play with of course, and a new not-so-cuddly pet - we'll be putting out more details on all that as we get closer to release day.

The DLC will be $4.99 or equivalent, just like the other two. Charging this helps to support Motion Twin during the development of their next project, as well as continuing free updates of Dead Cells.

After the DLC that is exactly what we'll be doing - releasing more free stuff! And we'll continue to do that for at least another year. There's already a good chunk of content planned and being worked on right now with some fresh ideas in play, so you shouldn't be getting bored with us anytime soon :D

Cheers,
Matt, EE & MT
