Gamescom 2025: Routine Preview—A Survival Horror Classic In The Making


After more than a decade of anticipation, Routine was finally shown in full force at gamescom 2025—and it looked very promising. Lunar Software, the small UK-based team behind the project, offered players a genuine look at what happens when patient design, uncompromising aesthetic choices, and pure suspense converge within a digital lunar wasteland. 





Months of speculation came to an end as the public was given hands-on time with a title that had eluded release since its initial unveiling in 2013—a development cycle marked by multiple engine changes and years of radio silence, broken only by determined updates and the loyalty of its audience. Despite that long and winding history, the team appears to have nailed the concept. If the demo is any indication, Routine is shaping up to be a horror experience well worth exploring.

RELEASE WINDOW TRAILER

Gorgeous Alien-style space horror Routine is finally nearing "the finish line", despite a key departure

We’ve already posted about one cursed moonbase game this week, but I am a creature of multitudes and always have room in my heart for another - particularly when it’s been in development for almost as long as I’ve been posting. Routine is still alive, baby! Development team Lunar Software have finally posted an update about their first-person 80s-themed space horror, which had Craig Pearson rhapsodising about Kubrickian smoothies back in 2012. [p]Hey, [/p][p][/p][p]It’s Aaron, Jemma and Pete here, from Lunar Software. We know it’s been a while since our last update. Working on ROUTINE has always been a huge undertaking for a team of our size and because of that, felt it was important to keep our heads down and focus entirely on finishing ROUTINE. But we are aware of the interest in our work and we are sorry for any frustration that this may have caused.[/p][p][/p][p]In short, ROUTINE is still very much in active development, and we are beginning to approach the finish line for the game. We’ve learned a lot from past experiences, one of those is not to commit to a release window before we’re absolutely sure we can hit it. However, we’re confident that we’ll be able to share more news on that front soon.[/p][p][/p][p]Until then, we would like to share a few screenshots of UNION PLAZA. It's a struggling tourist attraction on our Moon, complete with a Living Quarters, Arcade and even a Mall.[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]We are still a core development team of three, but we have been fortunate enough to gain the support and expertise of additional contributors during the game’s development. We are super thankful to have worked with a variety of awesome and skilled people over the years! One of those people we are grateful for and privileged to have worked with is Mick Gordon.
[/p][p]Mick spent many years working with us on ROUTINE. However, in July 2024 Mick made the difficult decision to leave the project because of conflicts in his schedule. During his time with us, Mick created many outstanding audio assets that will be featured in the final game and provided invaluable audio direction for ROUTINE. These contributions will now be implemented by a new audio designer and team. [/p][p][/p][p]Over the years, Mick has been an incredible friend and collaborator, supporting us through thick and thin. We are deeply grateful for his work on ROUTINE and wish him all the best in his future projects.[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]We know it’s been a good while since we last shared an update on the game, so thank you for being patient and continuing to support us as we work to finish it. It’s been a long road, we’ve poured every spare second we could into ROUTINE. Update - October 30, 2022

There have been a few inquiries about the safety and well-being of the Lunar base's Independent Computers. We recently obtained footage showing that they are still in operation and appear very functional.

FAQ

• What engine are you using?

  • For the Re-reveal trailer we were still using Unreal Engine 4, but we have now made the switch to Unreal Engine 5.
• Who is working on Routine?

  • It's the same core team of 4 people, however, thanks to our publisher Raw Fury, we have been able to get extra help on the Art and Writing side of things.
• Will the game support 4:3 resolutions so we can enjoy it on our favourite CRT?

  • As huge fans of CRT's This is something we are already looking into but can't promise anything just yet.
• Is the trailer pre-rendered?

  • Everything in the trailer was realtime and in-engine. All first person sequences were actual gameplay.
