In the previous devlog we surprised some of you with the new mechanics such as hunting and farming. In this entry we'd like to talk a little bit about cooking and recipes, because Shelter is still first and foremost a cooking game.




In Shelter you'll need to utilize your cooking skills to earn trust from the surrounding camps in the Sector and with their help try to find your long lost family. Cooking in the post-apocalypse will be based on ~60 unique food products. That includes meat harvested from 3 types of mutants, monster eggs, mutated plants and mushrooms and various pre-war products such as sauces, spices or multiple canned products. We wanted to see the expansion's setting as an opportunity to introduce tasty and exotic-looking foods.




New products also mean completely new recipes. Surviving in the wastelands requires high levels of creativity and making the most out of available resources. Shelter's cookbook will include a total of 45 recipes with varying levels of complexity. On the post-nuclear menu you'll be able to find all kinds of dishes from soups, stews and burgers to completely new dishes based partially on Turkish cuisine. New types of recipes include shashlik, kebabs and vegetables on a stick.




Shelter will be equipped with various tools and stands you might know already from the base game. That means ovens, griddles, cookers, pots, pans, knives, blenders all reskinned to match the theme of the game. There will be some new utensils as well. First one is the pipette which should make all the drizzling a bit easier and the second one is a huge BBQ grill placed in the middle of the kitchen. The BBQ grill will be used for preparing all the new skewer-based dishes.

Shelter release is just around the corner. Below is the latest devlog dedicated to some of the new mechanics - hunting and farming!

As you might already know, Shelter due to its post-apocalyptic setting is all about being resourceful and making the most out of every opportunity and scarce resources. That's why keeping the old mechanics of instantly buying everything we might need for cooking wouldn't make that much sense in the barren wastelands.

The food products can be obtained in one of 3 ways:

• hunting mutants and harvesting their meat
  
• growing plants in an underground farm
  
• ordering additional products from the caravan travelling across the Sector
  

The main source of protein will be the meat harvested from 3 species of mutants roaming the desert: rats, armadillos and vultures. During the day we can climb to the shed above our shelter and use it as a hunting range. Shooting is definitely a mechanic you wouldn't expect from a Cooking Simulator game but we tried to make it as interesting and engaging as possible. The gun will feature 4 upgrades:

• Scope
  
• Silencer
  
• Magazine
  
• Extended barrel
  

Those can be unlocked by progressing the accessible immediately in Sandbox mode.



Some quests might require us to maintain the mutants' population at a certain level. Killing too many might result in reduced numbers and longer time required to repopulate again. Mutants can be attracted by using makeshift lures which will attract certain types of creatures.



Meat is not the only type of food available in the wastelands. As mentioned in one of the previous entries, we wanted to look at the post-apocalyptic setting as an opportunity to introduce intriguing, colorful and vibrant plant-based foods. The following products can be grown in the underground farm:

• Broccoli
  
• Leek
  
• Cactus
  
• Celery
  
• Tomato
  
• Carrot
  
• Blue mushroom
  
• Red mushroom
  
• Green mushroom
  

After planting the seeds, watering and using optional boosters there's a 1-day long growing period after which the plants are ready for harvest.



Unfortunately one of the side effects of living in an irradiated wasteland are random mutations which can turn our seeds into carnivorous plants. In such a case, the only thing left to do is grabbing our gun to clear the spot for future plants.



There are a lot of recipes to master and most of them require more products than can be obtained on our own. The initial supplies can be restocked with the help of the caravan travelling across the Sector.
