Kaptain Brawe: A Brawe New World News

Fixes and Improvements

A new version of the game is now available, with various smaller fixes and improvements:

Improvements:
Subtitle sync fixed
Some users experienced subtitles not syncing to voiceovers properly. This should now be fixed for good. The game now uses the actual playback position from the sound card instead of an arbitrary timer.
If you experienced desync in the previous version, please give the new version a try and let us know in the comments if it's working ok now on your PC.
PS: Only English subtitles have been fixed at the moment, another update will be made in a few days with German subtitle sync fixed.
Support for full text in subtitles
Several players pointed out that if you're playing the game on a language other than English or German, then some subtitles often pass way too quickly to read them. With this new option you can now see the entire subtitle at once instead of split into 2-3 smaller segments.

Additionally, you can now opt to manually click to advance subtitles, a feature that existed when voiceovers were turned off, but now works in combitation with voiceovers (but only if full text mode is selected). The text will stay on until you click on it, so you can read it at your leasure.
Support for hiding subtitles
Due to popular demand, you can now opt to play the game without subtitles.
However, this will work only if you have chosen English voices and are playing the English version of the game (Or German voiceovers + german version).

Fixes:
Improved Russian translation
Thanks to steam user uka7777, The russian translation has been improved! Over the years we addded more features and thus - more texts, which we had to translate using Google translate. Which is, well, less than ideal translation-wise.
If anyone else is willing to help out with inspecting and/or fixing other translations, contact us at [email protected] :)
Fixed game lock in Schminkell 7
Thanks to steam user Kuulintu, we managed to find and fix a problem in Schminkell 7 where you could hard-lock the game up if you played in a certain order.

That's it for now :) If you run into any trouble or annoyance with this game, even if it's something small such as a typo in the text - please let us know.
We regularily update our games and will do so for a long time to come.

Happy Birthday, Kaptain Brawe!

A long time ago, in a modest office not so far away - Cateia Games began work on Kaptain Brawe...
It was 2009, most of us were still in College, and we were living the dream - We were finally developing games full time!
Sure, the games we worked on weren't blockbusters, but we poured our heart and soul into them, making best of what we could do and afford at the time.

Kaptain Brawe was our 3rd point and click adventure game and the first one that looked really, really good! Needless to say, we were all very excited to work on the game and enjoyed every minute of it.
To this day, dozens of games later, Kaptain Brawe still remains at the very top of the games we're most proud of.

And now, 15 years later, after a lot of work, we're excited to present a very special birthday gift to our beloved Kaptain, and to all of you - Kaptain Brawe is getting English voiceovers!

We worked hard on this, iterating countless times to get everything as close to perfect as possible! We hope you'll like the result :)

P.S. We have even more updates planned for Kaptain Brawe down the line, next on our agenda is getting full gamepad support implemented, so stay tuned!

A few minor improvements

After replaying Kaptain Brawe (yet again :)), I realized a few things that can be improved. And if that makes the game even a fraction of a percent better, why not :)

There were many instances where different playable characters would comment the same location or inventory item - in the exact same way! Which, in hindsight, is not good. Every character should have its own mind and a slightly different take. It's not only natural, it makes reading/listening to these comments more interesting.

So I've re-written several hundred lines of texts to address this. Sometimes the changes were slight, other times I was a bit more creative :)
These changes were only done for the English version, FYI.

Aside from that, I found that several lines of text were removed from the game at the last minute before release, for reasons now long forgotten. And best of all - they have German voiceovers for them! So I hunted all of them down and restored them. There were about 5 such instances if I recall correctly.
Now Kaptain Brawe has a new line at the beginning of the game when interacting with the translation machine, and several new lines at the ending, one of which you can see in the image on this post. Brawe now says "TO WICTORY, of course!".

There were some other minor issues and typos we've corrected over the last few months that were reported by users on iOS and Android, these are all included in the new version.

This version also make some improvements in the way the game works on Steam Deck, so it's the first step in getting that "steam deck verified" badge.

A blast from the past!

Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to point out that most of our games still run on old machines! It's not by accident, we make sure to use older development tools that allow this.
While not many players use Windows XP these days, we think it's a shame to deprecate old computers, especially if older versions of our games used to run on them.

Aside from XP, some of our games actually work on old Macintosh computers, and we're talking PowerPC-old OSX machines, before apple switched to using Intel CPU's.

PS: Unfortunately Steam no longer works on these OS's and thus our games won't start, but we can provide a build of Kaptain Brawe without steam integration if anyone wants to try it out!

Here are some photos to illustrate this. These aren't old photos, they were taken a few days ago :)
The HP laptop below has a special place in our CTO's heart, it was bought by the very first money earned from sales of our games and is the computer on which most of Kaptain Brawe's game code was written. Still alive and kicking in 2023/2024!

Kaptain Brawe remastered in glorious 4K!

As the 15th anniversary of the first release of Kaptain Brawe approaches, we've decided to take some time to give the game a fresh new look!
We had to comb through a lot of backup CD's and DVD's to find the original artwork sources which we then upscaled with various tools and scripts (and a lot of manual labour!). Additionally, we needed to adjust and optimize the game's code to properly support these changes.

Thankfully it was all worth it and the results are pretty great! Originally designed for 800x600 resolution, the game now supports both Full-HD and 4K graphics, which is quite a glow up if we can say so ourselves.

The new update is now live and you can download it on Steam. Give it a try and let us know what you think in the Discussion forum!
If you want to compare modes, you can switch between them either in the settings menu or by pressing F12 as you play.

PS: We have several more surprises lined up for Kaptain Brawe in the coming months. After all, it's a game we're most proud of in our long career and its age is not going to stop us from making a few improvements here and there. :)
