Test Build 2.7.4 - New Combat Controller Support

Tonight's build includes updated controller support for the new combat system.

Updated Xbox Controller Functions
  • Left Stick Up - move forward
  • Left Stick Down - move backwards
  • Right Stick left or right - turn left or right
  • Left Stick Right/Left - strafe right or left (if you have a target this will circle strafe the target same as pressing D or A)
  • Left and Right Bumpers - roll left or right
  • Right Trigger - attack
  • Left Trigger - block
  • Right Stick up - cycle target
  • Back - cancel target (if no target, opens Options UI, same as ESC key)
  • B button - power attack or dash attack
  • Y button - Kick or Shield Bash (if no target, jump)
  • X - open build menu (if in town)
  • A - interact with NPC, open treasure chest, etc. (if nothing to interact with, opens inventory)
  • D-pad left or right - cycle active hotbar slot
  • D-pad down - use potion in active hotbar slot

Note that if you attack and don't have a target and there is a monster in close proximity, the system will automatically pick a target for you. This works the same as it does for mouse and keyboard.

Also in case it was missed in the comments for build 2.7.2, I released a hotfix build yesterday to resolve some movement bugs that were associated with the new combat system changes.

With this addition, the new combat system is pretty much done. I'm going to be tweaking a few things here and there for a few days. If you have some time, I would greatly appreciate any feedback you may have before I release this to the wild!

Beta 2.7.2 - Weapon Imbuing and Combat Updates

Test Build 2.7.2 includes some improvements to the new combat system as well as new effects for imbued weapons!

New Combat System Improvements
  • Added better power attack particle effects. The gif above is the effect for axes and swords. The hammer has a smashing ground effect.
  • Added better information and image for blocking tutorial UI.
  • Fixed a bug that caused monsters to stop chasing you.
  • Updated the spellcaster tutorial UI to make it clear they are not affected by status effect attacks.
  • Better shields now have a slower block drain, making them more effective for a bit longer.
Imbued weapons are back!
  • Fire weapons have a chance of doing extra damage.
  • Frost weapons have a chance to slow an enemy, making them attack a bit less often and less likely to dodge your attacks.
  • Acid weapons cause damage for a short period of time. Enemies affected by this have their health bars turn green.
  • Vampiric weapons have a chance to heal you a bit when doing damage to a monster.
Vampiric and Fire Effects

Acid and Frost Effects

As before, weapons can be imbued by using crystals at the Tinker. Crystals are a rare drop from monsters.

Beta 2.7.1 - New Combat Test Build Updates

Today's update is for the test build for the new combat system. Includes a bunch of fixes and improvements. I'm feeling really good about how it plays and I think it should be out in the wild later this week!

For now, if you would like to check out the new combat system, you can get it by doing the following:

1. In the Steam Client Library where it lists all of your games, right click on HammerHelm
2. Click Preferences
3. In the window that opens, select the "Betas" Tab
4. Enter the password to download this build - NewCombatTest - and click Check Code
5. You should get a message that the code is correct
6. Click the drop-down box and select BigUpdateTest

Steam should immediately start a new download with the test client. The new game should be called "HammerHelm [bigupdatetest]". Once the download is complete you can launch the game!

Today's build includes:

  • Improved the transition animation between ending one string of attack combos and starting another. If you continued to hold down left mouse button, the previous version of the animation ended and then went into the idle animation before starting the next attack combo. That's why you see the hitch in the above gif on the left. The right side is the new transition.
  • Fixed a bunch of bugs related to fighting the skeletons and the Orc Boss in the Orc Quest.
  • Fixed a bug that caused the kick attack to fail if you pressed a WASD key.
  • Fixed a bug that let you do a Dash Attack before equipping a helmet.
  • Updated all of the weapon descriptions to state what their power attack is.
  • Turned off status effects for Spellcasters as they are way too easy to kill if you can knock them down or stun them. Consider this spellcasters ability to cast a protection spell on themselves. I need to add this to the tutorial UI.
  • A bunch of other fixes and tweaks to improve the look of combat.

To get back to the live build:

1. In the Steam Client Library where it lists all of your games, right click on HammerHelm
2. Click Preferences
3. In the window that opens, select the "Betas" Tab
4. Choose “None” from the drop down
5. Steam should then revert back to the Alpha client

Beta 2.7 - New Combat Test Build

Exciting news! I've created a test build of the new combat system integrated into the main game.

I'm still testing the system myself and need to run it through the Orc Quest to make sure it works against the Skeletons and the Orc Boss as those are special case monsters.

If you would like to check out the new combat system, you can get it by doing the following:

Rather than write a lengthy post about what's in the system (I will do that once it's live in the main build!) I'd recommend using a new character so you can see all of the tutorial related windows in the new combat system!

One important update since the final test map update I will point out however is each weapon now has it's own power attack.
  • The Hammer power attack does some damage and has a chance to stun nearby monsters.
  • The Axe power attack deals a large amount of damage to all nearby monsters.
  • The Sword power attack deals a massive amount of damage to your targeted monster.

The gif at the top is the Sword Power Attack. These are unlocked after you equip a copper weapon. Likewise, the Dash Attack is now unlocked after you equip your first helmet, and the Shield Bash is unlocked after you equip your first copper shield.

You'll also notice that the weapon trail's color is light blue, to match my diamond sword. The weapon trail matches the weapon's ore type color.

I think the Hammer might be a bit too powerful compared to the other two weapons. Curious to see what you all think!

To get back to the live build:

1. In the Steam Client Library where it lists all of your games, right click on HammerHelm
2. Click Preferences
3. In the window that opens, select the "Betas" Tab
4. Choose “None” from the drop down
5. Steam should then revert back to the Alpha client

Beta 2.6.6 - Walls and Combat Update

Tonight's build includes an update to the Main Entrance and a new, smaller wall. The smaller wall is 6x4, giving you more options to make the walls in your town symmetrical.

In this screenshot, the top is a stone entrance with two small walls on each side, the middle is made from two towers, a large wall, and two small walls, and the bottom is 5 small walls.

In addition, I've updated the Stone Entrance to fix the issue with parts of the wall intersecting into the stairs, making them difficult to ascend. I moved the stairs to the other side of each tower and adjusted the middle wall so it no longer extends into the towers.

In this shot, the left is the old entrance and the right is the new one.

This update also includes some minor tweaks to the new combat system. Att this point, I'm happy with it (and I hope you are too!) so I'm going to start the process of integrating it into the actual game. I have a few other things I want to add to it, but I can add those while I do the integration.

After that, I'm going to tackle controller support and a few other things and then we should be super close to being ready to leave early access!!!

Thank you again for all of the feedback and support. I know I say that a lot, but I mean it every time. I'm truly lucky to have such an awesome community!
