UPDATE 16: Networking & Server

Join A Friend

The 'Join Friend' button on the Main Menu shows all of your Steam friend's currently in a Co-Op World.


Just click on your friend's icon to quickly join their game.
Previously you couldn't do this in game, instead you had to click on your friend in the Steam's Friend List and chose Join Game from there.

Reset Research Preset

We've had a lot of requests for the ability to completely respec a Research Preset, so we've added a 'Sell All' button when Time Warping.


You'll need to confirm the respec so you can't accidentally refund all of your Time Cubes.

Devs & Mods

Devs & Mods will now show up with a yellow outline on the Live Leaderboard & in the Convoy Widget.


So you'll show up with a white outline, friends will be in green, and Devs & Mods will be yellow.

Networking

Over the past few weeks the server has been like a giant game of whack-a-mole.
We add logging to the server, find & fix a network bug, this increases the network traffic letting players further stress test the server, which uncovers a new bug, repeat.

However its been a successful game of whack-a-mole, we've:
- Fixed an inconsistent timer that was causing group disconnects
- Resolved an issue where an already connected player reconnects to the server
- Tested out a new server host, but returned to our previous host due to better performance
- Fixed a few network errors

Based on our logs, the remaining server disconnects all seem to be valid, meaning the player has not communicated with the server in over 60 seconds.

We'll continue to keep an eye on the server as the network traffic continues to increase.

Other Changes
  • Changed admin input field to password field
  • Admin passwords saved, no longer have to re-type each time

UPDATE 15: QoL Improvements

Camera

Camera will only switch to zoomed out view if you've been in a Zone longer than 5 seconds.

Punch Through Perk

In addition to enemies, the Punch Through Perk now punches through walls.
If using Bounce & Punch Through, Bounce takes priority, using up all the bounces and then it can punch through walls.

Carry Capacity Icon

You can now see when other players are over capacity, useful for knowing why they aren't locking to convoys.

Carry Capacity Progress Bars

When you are at 75% of your Carry Capacity a progress bar will appear letting you know how close you are to reaching your limit.

The bar will change letting you know when you're over your carry capacity.

Gold Per Hour

'Now' & 'Best This Timeline' Gold Per Hour stats added to the Gold tooltip.

Timeline Settings

Time Cube bonus modifiers are now displayed below the Timeline Settings button on the Research screen.

Overpowered Tooltips

Hovering over the Overpowered bar displays a tooltips.

Welcome Back

Offline Time has been added to the Welcome Back screen.

Server Improvements

Thanks for your patience this sprint as we worked on improving the Public World server.

Some of the improvements we made were:
- Fixed server Null Reference Errors (weren't impacting players but good to identify & fix)
- Changed server timeout from 20 to 60 seconds (reduced number of disconnects by 50%)
- When rejoining kick out existing player instead of kicking out new joining player (better for reconnects)
- Investigated & confirmed that thread locking isn't causing disconnects
- Setup new Amazon AWS server which we will test out during tonight's update

Other Changes
  • Fixed all research profiles getting set to same profile
  • Fixed maximized window to not be fullscreen
  • Potential fix for muted volume unmuted when joining game
  • Upgraded from Unity 2019.1.0f2 to 2019.1.2f1
  • Increased chat history from 50 to 100

UPDATE 14: Performance Improvements

Female Outfit

Unlock the new April outfit by completing the 'Defeat 3 Crawlers' Mission.

Updating to Unity 2019.1

The newest game engine adds Experimental Incremental Garbage Collection. This means fewer lag spikes and smoother transitions between Zones.


When updating Unity there are always a few things that break. Time Cubes rendering incorrectly & corrupted button icons were just a couple of the bugs we encountered.

Cinemachine

While updating our camera system, we decided it was a good time to improve the in-game cameras. It will now switch between a close up view of the Soldier & a zoomed out view showing all the action in the Zone.

Network Library

We found a multi-threading issue on the server that could cause disconnects, so we've updated the network library increasing server stability.

Hide Other Players Bullets

One of our most requested performance enhancements, the ability to hide other players bullets. Even though you can't see their bullets, they will still cause damage.


The 'Show Other Players Bullets' option can be found in Settings > Graphics.

Time Warp Anytime

After completing your first Time Warp, you can now Time Warp anytime whether you've collected Time Cubes or not.

Free Roam Camera Reset

Based on your feedback, the Free Roam Camera now resets when leaving Horde/Big Boss Zone instead of after completing each Zone.

Fullscreen 4K Resolution

For best performance the default maximum resolution is 1080p. The 'Fullscreen 4K Resolution' option increases display quality for players with higher resolution monitors. This option can be found in Settings > Display.

IL2CPP

We implemented an IL2CPP optimization but as described below we ended up with some unexpected results.

Mono: With the default Mono backend, as you encounter a new piece of code while playing, it gets compiled to machine code, which in theory can cause lag spikes.
IL2CPP: All code is pre-compiled to machine code. Compiling in the editor takes longer, but the produced code is supposed to be faster.

Mono Lowest FPS = 91
IL2CPP Lowest FPS = 61
So IL2CPP was actually worse when spawning enemies. This is why measuring optimizations is important.

  • Fixed losing cursor when in Free Roam Camera & getting on/off Hover Bike
  • Potential fix for invincible enemies
  • Weapon switching optimizations
  • Moderators have the ability to Mute players in Global Chat
  • Updated Hover Bike icon
  • Fixed Pick Up System Null Reference Error

UPDATE 13: Spec Ops Mission!

Missions

The Mission System has been revamped, smoothing out the early game flow and allowing multiple active missions at the same time.
We've also made sure that existing saves are compatible with the new Mission System.

Spec Ops Mission

Buy the first Spec Ops Upgrade (Soldier Level 1,000) to unlock the Soldier's Spec Ops outfit.

Mission Widget

All active Missions are displayed in the Mission Widget, automatically switching Missions as you make progress on them.

Mission Progress

Mission progress can be tracked through the Achievements screen.

Scientist Model

The Scientist has been updated to use the new high performance model style.

Auto Spawn

Click the Auto-spawn button to toggle whether or not enemies & bosses will auto-spawn.
When toggled off, enemies will no longer spawn when going into Ghost Mode.

Gold & Health

The Gold & Health have both been updated to match the new UI style.

Active Ability Recharge Time

All Active Ability recharge times have been cut in half, so now it only takes 30 seconds to charge Automatic Fire & 1 minute for Dual Wield.

Other Changes:
  • Timeline Settings are saved to Research presets
  • Fixed Active Abilities not recharging when offline
  • Fixed ability to rejoin game with 0 hearts on a permadeath run
  • Automatically switch to Rocket Launcher & Plasma Rifle when they are collected
  • Updated the Campaign image on Main Menu
  • Changed Buy Mode default to Until Upgrade (xU)
  • Updated the dirt textures in the past Tutorial Zones
  • Optimized Stats
  • Optimized Achievement listeners
  • Moved the Drone's docked position when in First Person to take up less screen space
  • Updated Drone & Turret to be Buy buttons instead of Repair
  • Extend black fade-in when joining to prevent the camera showing the sky
  • Adjusted vertical padding on tooltips to keep consistent spacing

UPDATE 12: Easter Egg Hunt

April 12 to 22nd

Zones 1-100 will be filled with colorful Easter eggs (at least 5 per zone).
Find & collect eggs to permanently unlock bunny outfits for the Soldier, Drone & Turret.

Holiday Achievements

Collect 100 eggs to permanently unlock the Soldier's bunny outfit.
Collect 500 to unlock the Drone's bunny ears and 1,000 for the Turret's ears.
Unlocks are per save profile, and outfits can only be unlocked during the Easter event.

Outfits

Change outfis by hovering over a teammate.
Hover over a teammate for the outfit selector.
Each Build Preset can have a different outfit, so you can be a speed running bunny and an idle soldier.
Want to check out your new outfit, comma (,) is the default key to toggle 3rd person.

Collecting Eggs

Active players can collect eggs by running around or using the Free Roam Camera.
Eggs respawn every minute so idle players can literally sit on an egg to collect them.

Soldier

Check out the new Soldier model.
It only has 358 total triangles compared to the 5,134 triangles in the previous model - a 14x improvement which means higher performance overall.

Tree Trunk Trail

Combat areas in Zones 51-60 have been opened up.

Convoy Widget

The Convoy widget has been redesigned, improving readability.

Camera Movement

Smoothed out 1st & 3rd person weapon spring physics.
3rd Person & Drone cameras both push back from walls, reducing how often the camera clips through the world.

Fixes
  • Time Cube Widget header missing hover icon
  • Convoy Widget UI jumping
  • Crafted Perk notification wrong color
  • Switching profiles shows/hides collected or uncollected Blue butterflies
  • Removed enemy teleporting sound effect
  • Click Weapon renamed to Solider on the Teammate UI, Cards & Modifiers screen
