Mewgenics News

41 days remain!

[p]Welcome to 2026! The year of the cat![/p][p]We have been very, very busy over the holiday break because guess what? In 9 days we are sending review copies of the game to the press![/p][p]After talking to a few people who did previews and understood the scope of the game, we have decided to give writers a solid 30-ish days to really dig in deep and explore the game fully.[/p][p]Speaking of previews, in late November we let a bunch of overseas outlets get their hands on the game for a few days... and here are some of the highlights of the previews they wrote![/p][p][/p]
“MEWGENICS HIDES ONE OF THE BEST GAMES OF NEXT YEAR, ALONGSIDE INCEST AND TAPEWORMS”
[p]- Games.cz[/p][p][/p]
"One of the funniest indie video games we have recently tried and one of the richest and most innovative exponents of the genre ever."
[p]- Multiplayer.it[/p][p][/p]
"I came away deeply excited for Mewgenics. When my preview access was taken away I was distraught. It looks to be an absolute banger."
[p]- Eurogamer[/p][p][/p]
"A masterpiece by two extremely talented game designers who break the boundaries of genres in an ingenious way."
[p]- KonsoliFIN[/p][p][/p]
"2025 isn't even over yet and I've already played my best game of 2026..."
[p]- Jeuxvideo [/p][p][/p]
"If the new game from the creator of "The Binding of Isaac" can maintain the level of the first 30 hours of gameplay, then my game of the year 2026 is already decided before the year has even begun."
[p]- Gamestar [/p][p][/p][p][/p]
"Probably one of the deepest and most addictive tactical RPGs we've played in recent years." "the wait was worth it."
[p]- Gamekult[/p][p][/p]
"In my time with Mewgenics, I haven't even scratched the surface of its features, and I've already had more awesome moments than other games offer in their entire runtime."
[p]- Gameswelt[/p][p][/p][p]And we also got another video preview! This time from GameSpot!
[/p][previewyoutube][/previewyoutube][p][/p]
“This game is incredible, February 10th can’t come soon enough.”
[p]- Gamespot[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]...shit is getting real. But I know what you came here for... the last in my let's play series!!![/p][p]This month I try and best Tyler and destroy the junkyard... or do I?[/p][p][/p][previewyoutube][/previewyoutube][p][/p][p][/p]
DEV UPDATE:
[p]So where are we now? Here is the lowdown.[/p]
 • [p]The game is done and ready for review!!![/p]
 • [p]Localization continues. Our first batch of extra languages includes French, Spanish, German, Italian, and Brazilian Portuguese. We want to have these in for launch but if they aren't ready by then, it will come shortly after. More languages will come post launch depending on demand![/p]
[p]What is left???[/p]
 • [p]Polish! The remaining 40 days will be spent fixing up cutscenes, adding any missing sounds, fixing bugs, and smoothing out any edges we may run into.[/p]
 • [p]Credits: The final "cutscene" still needs to be 100%, mostly gathering names and fluffing it up.[/p]
 • [p]Features Trailer: Flynn is finishing up yet another live action trailer we will be pushing on Feb 1st that will show off the game's features and say the word pussy like 100 times.[/p]
 • [p]Release Trailer: Marty is working on remaking the original Mewgenics intro theme song animation. We hope to launch that a day or two before release.[/p]
 • [p]Hype Train: Currently strategizing a way to make the last 14 days leading up to launch special for die hard fans... stay tuned.[/p]
[p]Anyway, I might do another blog post before Feb 1st... depending on how much time I have.
[/p][p]WISH LIST THE GAME ON STEAM! AND TELL YOUR FRIENDS! [/p][p]MEWGENICS IS COMING! [/p][p][/p][p]xoxo[/p][p]-Edmund[/p]

71 days remain!

[p]Where are we now!? Here’s a little update.[/p]
 • [p]Gamepad support is complete! (The game will be 100% Deck compatible at launch.)[/p]
 • [p]Achievements have been added (though we may add more in the late polishing stages).[/p]
 • [p]All text has been sent to localizers, and localization has started![/p]
[p]What’s left?[/p]
 • [p]Since we finished all the required cutscenes, I’ve added one more and put our lead animator on remaking the game’s intro (the original Mewgenics trailer animation). A few of the cutscenes need to be scored, and a few others need touch-up work.[/p]
 • [p]The game’s “continue save” intro is mostly done but still in pieces. It features a randomly generated ending each time you play, so that will need some love this month.[/p]
 • [p]All the pending UI work—like the pause screen, goal markers, and reorder buttons—still needs to be added.[/p]
 • [p]The game’s credits need to be 100% finished (this may need to wait till the end of dev).[/p]
[p]It’s not much, but it’s still a bit stressful to have these things looming. 71 days seems like a lot, but for a game this size we need to get review copies to the press 3–4 weeks before launch, so really it’s more like 40 days to finish all the major things and 31 days to polish the minor things.[/p][p][/p][p]But now that all that’s out of the way... IT’S TIME FOR PART 3 OF MY MEWGENICS LETS PLAY![/p][p][/p][p]Will my cats be mauled? Will I get a TPK? Will I make a fool of myself? Probably... but it all makes for a great video! Go watch![/p][p][/p][previewyoutube][/previewyoutube][p][/p][p]And if that wasn’t enough, we got yet ANOTHER let’s play—this one was live with Dan Gheesling![/p][p][/p][p][/p][previewyoutube][/previewyoutube][p][/p][p]And for those of you interested in game design talk, Tyler and I go deep with Thomas Brush in this neato podcast![/p][p][/p][previewyoutube][/previewyoutube][p]Oh, and the Wookash podcast as well![/p][p][/p][previewyoutube][/previewyoutube][p]There might be more, but I really gotta get back to work...[/p][p][/p][p]Final reminder: WISHLIST MEWGENICS ON STEAM![/p][p]We are very close to being in the top 100 most wishlisted games on Steam, and doing so will help us a ton. Help us attain this Xmas miracle![/p][p]WISHLIST TODAY![/p][p][/p][p]More updates to come![/p][p]-Edmund[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p][/p][p][/p][p][/p][p][/p][p][/p]

LIVE STREAM TIME!
99 days remain… 99 fuckin’ days!
[p]Crazy to see us under that 100-day mark.[/p]
[p]Shit is getting real. Let me break down where we’re at.[/p]
[p][/p]
[p]- All of the game’s content has been added (outside of a few cutscenes).[/p]
[p]- Localization has been prepped, all mechanical text has been re-edited (by Tyler this time), and localization has officially started![/p]
[p][/p]
[p]Seems finished, right? WRONG! Here’s what we have left to do:[/p]
[p][/p]
[p]- Achievements (these are drawn but not implemented; roughly 300).[/p]
[p]- 1.5 cutscenes need to be animated (and I’m adding one more since the team is a bit ahead of schedule).[/p]
[p]- A few cutscenes still need to be scored and have SFX added.[/p]
[p]- The game’s intro, start screen, and save menu need to be finished.[/p]
[p]- The game’s credits roll needs to be finished.[/p]
[p]- There are 3 bosses that need some extra polish/rebalancing.[/p]
[p]- Pause/options menu needs to be fully implemented.[/p]
[p]- Visual goal markers need to be added to the Pause/House screens.[/p]
[p]- Re-order buttons and other QoL updates need to be added to the House and House menus.[/p]
[p]- Gamepad support! (Tyler is working on this now.)[/p]
[p]- General polish (adding missing particles, spicing up existing animations/cutscenes, etc.).[/p]
[p][/p]
[p]So, a few big things and a lot of little things. It’s mildly stressful to think about, but everyone’s in get-shit-done mode from here on out![/p]
[p]But you’re here for my stream, right? Well, guess what?! I’m not showing you my next stream—instead we’re gonna watch an edited version of Tyler’s livestream from a few weeks ago![/p]
[p]Watch as Tyler takes the hard path all the way through the Junkyard while viewers vote on what he does. Will he be trolled to the point of failure, or will he crush?![/p]
[p]Go watch it and find out![/p]
[p][/p]
[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]
[p][/p]
[p]Since we’ve officially spoiled the Junkyard now, I think it’s time to reveal the track “Chum Bucket Kitty” in all its glory (with lyrics).[/p]
[p][/p]
[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]
[p]We’ve also been doing a ton of podcasts and interviews the last few weeks. Here are a few of my personal faves:[/p]
[p][/p]
[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]
[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]
[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]
[p]See you next week with Part 3 of my Mewgenics series![/p]

Binding of Isaac dev rejects writing "safe" things, discusses new "breeding sim"

I can't say I expected to be writing about eugenics when I woke up this morning, but the gaming news cycle always throws up a few surprises. Mewgenics is a game that designer and artist Edmund McMillen describes as a "randomly generated turn-based strategy game where there's cats." With "breeding sim" elements and plenty of The Binding of Isaac DNA, this is a systemic game that's not for the faint-hearted. But a new interview reveals that six years of development have produced a surprisingly touching response from fans.
