GRIT Dev Blog #5 - Riding the Train

Howdy, partner!

We’ve been getting a lot of great feedback from our playtesters, and have just announced our next scheduled test.

Want to join the fight? “Request Access” on our Steam Store page for a chance to become a pre-Early-Access playtester!

And if you’re looking for a place to meet up with your gang, or maybe just hang out and shoot the breeze, check out our digital ranch on Discord: https://discord.gg/fightwithgrit

Last time, we talked about horses, and the joy of riding across the open range. But experienced travelers of Sunrise County seek another beast of burden, with a soul forged in iron and a fiery heart. Yep, I reckon it’s time you learn how to catch a train.

The Sunrise County Rail System

When you open your map (default: M), you will see train tracks that snake through the mountains and towns, as well as icons that represent the trains themselves:

Knowing their location is one thing, but how does one board the train? Well, you could wait at the station in town for it to show up. But for a more dramatic approach, ride your horse up alongside or behind the train. This will give your horse a massive speed boost, allowing you to keep pace until the next scheduled stop.

No matter how you reach the train, you’ll be boarding by pressing the interact button (default: F) near one of the train cars.

Rumor has it some wild daredevils tried jumping right from their horses onto a moving train. We went looking for 'em, but all we found were their hats. So when you hear the whistle blow, watch your step near the tracks, and don't say we didn't warn you.

Passengers and Conductors

Once you’ve boarded, you can move freely between the cars by heading to the next car in line, then pressing the interact key to hop across the coupler.

If you head to the back of the train, you will reach the caboose, which offers excellent protection from enemy fire. Head to the front, however, and you will reach the engine cab. From here, you can blow the train whistle, which will temporarily push the train to even faster speeds!

Riding Through the Storm

But wait, what if the train is heading into the Calamity? Fear not, for the train and the area around it are immune to the Calamity for the majority of the match!

When the safe zone becomes very small, this special aura can no longer protect you. So keep an eye on the map, and plan your route to the final showdown.

The Switch Track

Speaking of planning routes, you might notice signs like these sitting along the train tracks:

When you shoot at these signs, they will spin, and the track up ahead will change position, sending the train on a different route to head on over to different areas of the map.

Do you have enough skill to shoot that sign from a moving train, and switch to a new track before it’s too late? It ain’t easy…

All Aboard the Sunrise Express

Have an urge to get out of town fast? Ignore the Calamity in luxurious comfort? Run a science experiment involving switch tracks and dangerously high speeds?

Then it’s high time to hop a train, and travel across Sunrise County in style!

GRIT Dev Blog #4 - Gunslinging with your Gang

Howdy, partner!

Our third round of playtests opens up again this Friday and Saturday! But it certainly won’t be the last, so “Request Access” on our Steam Store page for a chance to join the pre-Early-Access playtest community!

If you are already a playtester and want to saddle up with others like you, hop on our Discord server: https://discord.gg/fightwithgrit

With so many new players fixing to join the fight, we think it’s high time you learn to improve your teamwork in GRIT.

SHARING GEAR AND PERKS

Whether you land gracefully on a saloon balcony or crash into a barn at the start of a match, your first order of business is getting armed and dangerous. But while you do, keep an eye on the lower left part of your screen.

These icons will tell you the level of armor and backpack for each team member, and whether they still got a hat. But that’s not all: as weapons with matching suits are collected, another icon will appear to keep track of Perk progress.

Collect four of the same suit and complete a weapon card flush, and a special gold icon will appear. Savvy teams work quickly to collect matching weapons and enable powerful shared Perks!

But what should you do if you find the perfect pistol to complete a partner’s Perk, or a spot a stabled stallion to share on a sunset ride?

That’s easy! Slap a mark on it!

THE MARKING SYSTEM

The marking system is highly useful to keep your team communicating and working together. Here are the types of pings available to you and your posse:

WAYPOINT / MAP MARKERS - press the [E] key while viewing the map

Marking the map to let your partners know about key landmarks, a strategic drop point in a certain town, the location of unclaimed horses, or a good rendezvous point are all great ways to stay coordinated and together as you battle enemy gunslingers and the encroaching Calamity.

POINTING OUT USEFUL ITEMS AND OBJECTS - press the [E] key while looking around

When you discover an item your teammates might need, look straight at it, then mark it by tapping E once.

Once marked, a descriptive icon will appear, and your cowpoke will holler at the rest of your gang to describe what they’ve found. This action is key to help your team collect matching weapon suits and become much more powerful in a firefight.

Weapons and gear aren’t the only things you can mark. Healing items, horses, mountains, mudholes, rustlers, hustlers — place a mark on whatever strikes your fancy!

ENEMY PINGS - double-tap the [E] key

Letting your crew know when you’ve spotted enemy gunslingers can help your side get the jump on them and often lead to success. Whether your adversaries are hiding in a certain building in town or taking shots from a position on a high ridge, enemy pings are a handy tool to warn your team of clear and present danger.

THERE'S NO "I" IN GANG

While some desperadoes like to leave their gang out in the cold, clever cowpokes know when it’s time to swallow their pride and work together.

So share that Snake Oil, watch each other’s backs, and you’ll live to see another sunrise in Sunrise County!

Next GRIT Playtests on Friday, April 30th and Saturday, May 1st!

Mark your calendars, gunslingers of Sunrise County. The next series of pre-Early Access playtests have been announced for GRIT.

We’ll be letting in more players than ever for this round of tests, and are looking forward to everyone putting on their boots and getting ready to ride or die. The playtest will include NA and EU servers, but best to join up and keep an eye on our Discord, so that you have the latest news during the playtest in real-time.
