Phase 2 Continues - Watch Reset Day Live

The second phase of the Avalonian Invasion continues, with stronger Avalonian foes roaming the Outlands and even guarding territories. And this Saturday, December 21, all territories will be reset, giving Albion's guilds a new opportunity for territory ownership.

As always, we'll be covering all the action live on the AlbionTV Twitch channel! Starting Saturday at 17:30 UTC, hosts Lewpac and Shozen will start their broadcast, and starting at 18:00 UTC guilds will have the opportunity to claim territories and launch attacks.

We'll be following all the madness as it unfolds, broadcasting fights live with a 15-minute delay. After the first round of invasions is complete, join them again at 0:30 UTC for the North American timeslot, with invasions underway at 1:00 UTC.

Dev Talk: Crystal League

The Queen update arrives on January 20, bringing a massive redesign of the Outlands and numerous new features like the Crystal League. In our newest Dev Talk, Game and Level Designer Dominik Müller discusses what the Crystal League is, how it works, and the role it plays in Albion Online.

The Basics

5v5 fights have always been an important part of Albion Online. Thus far, though, they were only available in very limited scenarios: the Arena, Hellgates, and most famously, GvGs and Crystal Realm Battles. While the Arena is very casual, Hellgates and GvGs are very competitive, and thus difficult for newer players to participate in.

With Queen, we wanted to open up the 5v5 scene to as many players as possible while still raising its impact and skill ceiling. We wanted 5-person teams to face off at different levels throughout the season, and end with a bang: high-stakes fights with the finest 5v5 players in the game.

This is how the Crystal League came to be. It allows players to compete in daily casual 5v5 matches to qualify for participation in much more exclusive high-risk, high-reward battles.
Tokens

Participating in a Crystal League fight requires a Crystal League Token. With one level 1 token per player, you and four teammates can join a level 1 match. This token can be bought from the Energy Manipulator (who now appears in all Royal Cities) or from other players at the Marketplace.

With these tokens, players can then sign up either through the NPC or at a guild-owned territory tower with the guild's permission. Winning a level 1 match gives a level 2 token, which will allow you to fight in a level 2 match, and so on. In total, there are eight token levels and nine fight levels, so you have to be unbeaten in eight matches to get to the final round.

Tokens of level 1-3 can be sold and traded. Tokens of level 4 and above cannot be sold or traded, but can be salvaged for huge amounts of Silver.

Fight levels differ in three key aspects:

1. Item Power Cap

The Item Power cap is a straightforward 20% multiplier, meaning all IP above the displayed cap will be reduced by 80%. (E.g. for IP cap 1000, a total IP of 1100 will have a total effective IP of 1020.) The item power cap for level 1 is 700, 2 is 800, up to level 9 with a cap of 1500.

This ensures that lower-level matches aren't excessively expensive, giving beginners a chance to participate at a reasonable cost.

2. Rewards

Rewards are a combination of Silver, Fame Tomes, and Season Points. High-level winners can earn up to 30M Silver, 1M Fame, and 10,000 Season Points, plus a chance for a Tower Chariot, Colossus Beetle, or Battle Eagle!

Winning a match entered via a territory will level up the territory's tower if the match was of equal or higher level than the tower. Higher tower levels buff a cluster's territory guards, resource enchantment rate, and Siphoning Mage efficiency.

3. Time Slots

There were several things we wanted to accomplish with time slots. We wanted to give as many players as possible the option to play daily. We wanted there to be the option for multiple matches per day at various levels. And we wanted to end the season with extremely high-value fights between the best players.

Starting times (UTC):
  • Level 1-3: 2:00, 12:00 and 19:00 daily
  • Level 4: 3:00, 13:00, and 20:00 twice a week
  • Level 5: 4:00, 14:00, and 21:00 weekly
  • Level 6: 5:00, 15:00, and 22:00 once per month
  • Level 7: 6:00, 16:00, and 23:00 once per month
  • Level 8: final day of the season at 18:00
  • Level 9: final day of the season at 19:00

(Note that "season" refers to Guild Seasons - while Crystal League fights are available outside of Guild Seasons, they only offer Season Points while a Guild Season is active.)
Two possible scenarios
1. Peter
  • Peter plays with four friends. They've done Arenas and Hellgates, and have always wanted to GvG but never have.
  • Two of Peter's friends are not in his guild, but that doesn't matter for the Crystal League.
  • He and his friends each buy a level 1 token at the Energy Manipulator. They can see when the next match happens either in the Crystal League tab or on the token.
  • Everyone puts their desired gear into the battlevault by the Energy Manipulator and signs up for the match.
  • They win the fight, and each of them gets a level 2 token. They sign up for the next day's level 2 match.
  • After winning their level 2 and 3 matches, the team has earned 7.5M Silver, 3M Fame, and 150 Season Points in total.
  • The level 4 match is worth up to 950,000 Silver, 25 Season Points, and 300,000 Fame. Peter and his friends decide to do level 3 again tomorrow before the level 4 match to warm up.
2. Lily
  • Lily is a seasoned GvG player who has won hundreds of GvGs and Crystal Realm Battles.
  • Her team is very important to her guild, as they always enter Crystal League matches via their territory tower. Each win levels up the tower, which buffs the whole territory.
  • Today is the last day of the season, and her team has risen through the ranks to receive level 8 tokens.
  • Winning levels 8 and 9 will earn her guild an additional 65,000 Season Points, and could win them the season. But they'll have to face other teams that have also been unbeaten for eight matches, and do it with a very high Item Power cap.
Conclusion
  • The Crystal League provides 5v5 content matching one’s skill level
  • It offers a much lower entry level, but with much more impact at the high end
  • It lets players like Peter and Lily have the gameplay they want: either pushing their team with increasingly harder content, or winning the season for their guild

The Holidays are Here, and a Fame Boost is Coming

Christmas trees and presents fill the cities, the Yuletide Challenge is in full swing, and the mysterious Uncle Frost can be found lurking throughout Albion. Read on for more details of this festive season!

Uncle Frost Awaits

Have you met Uncle Frost? This elusive holiday entity is sometimes a beneficent spirit, other times a fearsome fiend. From now until January 8, you can encounter the latter form in rare Keeper dungeons – keep an eye out for Christmas trees at the dungeon's end, and defeat him for a chance at Snowballs, Decorated Trees, and even the rare Yule Stag mount skin!

To help you celebrate (and show there's no hard feelings about any dungeon encounters), Uncle Frost has given us fireworks and snowballs to send to all players. To claim your presents, simply log into the game between now and January 8, 2020 at 10:00 UTC. The rewards will be sent to you via in-game mail – hit the streets of Albion to launch some fireworks or start a snowball fight!

Fame Boost: Eight Days a Week

Finally, we're rounding out the year with an eight-day Fame Boost. Log in between December 25 at 10:00 UTC and January 2 at 10:00 UTC to get the automatic Mists of Albion buff, which grants an additional 25% Fame for all activities. It's the perfect time to unlock another gathering tier or max out a weapon line! (Note: Fame Boosts do not apply to Fame earned from Tomes, and do not accelerate Adventurer or Guild Challenge progress.)

Thanks from all of us to all of you, our players, who make the world of Albion what it is. Stay warm, and watch for a year-end wrapup covering all the major happenings of 2019!

Player and Item Migration with the Queen Update

The Queen update arrives on January 20, 2020. With this update, the Outlands will be completely reworked, and with very few exceptions, all territories and siege camps in the Royal Continent will be removed. We have put a number of measures in place to assist with this transition, but as there is the potential for item loss, please read the following changes carefully.
Migrating Players and Items
1. Players:
  • Players in the Outlands will be moved to the city with the portal closest to them. Even though the Caerleon portals will no longer exist, for this transfer, Caerleon is included among these cities.
  • Players in affected zones in the Royal continent (i.e. those that had territories or siege camps) will be moved to the nearest zone entrance.
2. Banks and Battlevaults:
  • All personal items in banks and battlevaults in the Outlands, or in a removed Royal Territory or Siege Camp, will be moved to the Royal City that is closest or has the closest portal.
  • Guild banks in territories will be moved to the owning guild's Guild Island Bank.
  • Territory bank tabs (and their corresponding access rights) will be copied to the Guild Island Bank.
  • If the guild doesn't own a Guild Island, the items will be destroyed.
3. Islands:
  • Personal and guild islands will be movable during the month following the Queen update. This is currently slated for January 20 10:01 UTC to February 20 10:00 UTC.
  • Only islands created prior to the launch of the Queen update are eligible to be moved.
  • Islands moved during the last island move are still eligible to be moved once more after the Queen update.
4. Items that will NOT be moved:
  • Items currently for sale or in the completed tab of Marketplaces in Guild Home Territories will not be moved. This means that any items in Marketplaces in the Outlands when Queen goes live will be lost.
  • Contents of placeable chests, as well as all placed furniture items, will not be moved and will be destroyed.
  • Farmable items left in territories will be destroyed.
  • Buildings left in territories, including farms and pastures, will be destroyed.
Amnesty for Low Reputations

With the changes to the Outlands, and particularly the destruction of the Caerleon Realmgate, movement restrictions due to reputation will be mitigated as follows:
  • Players below -15000 reputation will have their reputation adjusted to -15000 to allow movement within yellow and red zones.
  • However, as Caerleon will no longer have a Realmgate to the Outlands, if a Dreaded player enters Caerleon (after re-lowering their reputation in a neighboring red zone), their only options are to wait for their reputation to increase or fast travel to another city.

Outlands Report #2: A Growing Threat

I. New foes emerge

When last we spoke, I'd just come back from the Outlands, rattled but still (mostly) whole, with a glowing gold-hued flask to show for my labors. Since then, we've seen this strange energy become part of our lives: our tools, our food, and even our creatures have been infused with its power. And it fetches a pretty penny on the market as well – I know more than a few who've seen their coffers swell with coin from trading it.

Not one to be outdone by the average adventurer, a few of us geared up and headed back into the northern wilds, ready to harvest more of the stuff. We headed through the portal, evaded a few wandering bandits looking to get their hands on our gear, and prepared ourselves for a fight.

We stood huddled behind a rock, our weapons at the ready, and Handsome Jim sticks his ugly mug out to take a look. Quick as a bolt he crouches back down, looking like he's seen a ghost... or worse. Well, Jim, I say, out with it. What is it? He just stares at me wide-eyed, saying nothing, and shrugs. Whatever it is, I think, it's nothing we can't handle. Come on, lads, I say, and step out into the clearing.

Jim may be a big dumb lug, but to his credit, I couldn't rightly describe what I was seeing either.

It was neither human nor creature; it was simply a... sphere. It floated above the ground, powered with its own strange magic. I stood there mute as it floated, making small movements... patrolling.,

And then it saw – or rather, sensed – me, and immediately it was on the attack. It fired out some sort of concentrated energy, knocking me tail over top and sending me flying back into a thicket. Dazed, I lifted my head enough to see Jim raise his axe – and the thing charged at him, knocking him back as well. I gathered my wits, picked up my sword, and ran back into the clearing.

I can't say how long the fight went on, but we finally managed to best the thing. It flew apart into a mess of springs and gears, and then, one by one, each of the pieces dissolved into that same white light. Gives me the creeps, I tell you.
II. ...and they grow yet bolder

After that, we called for backup from our guild. Rather than let these white-clad goons shove us around, we thought we'd go on the offensive. We weren't going to let them roam around unchecked.

As a first step, we decided to claim a few territories for ourselves. With a steady supply of resources, we could get ourselves a foothold, and really start to carve out a piece of the Outlands for ourselves.

We regeared and mounted up, and as our army rode off toward the nearest territory, I felt my confidence returning. We mounted the crest of a hill, and as we looked down upon the yet-unclaimed territory, my heart sank once again.

Now they were in our territories! This was too much! Sure, we adventurers may shed blood over territories, but at least their resources end up back in our hands eventually. This has gone too far!

I lost count of how many of the great, pike-wielding giants I slew that day. As the sun set blood-red over the horizon, the last one fell, and the territory was ours. We live to fight another day, and set about putting our hard-won territory in order.

As my blood cooled from the frenzy of battle, I felt a surge of pride for our victory. But in the back of my mind, troubling thoughts lingered. The boldness of this new force knows no limit, and they keep pushing further and further into lands we once thought were untouchable.

Part of me wonders: what else might they try to claim for themselves?
