Behind the Banner: Why Not

Behind the Banner is a series that shines a light on Albion's many diverse guilds, from fierce PvP warbands to tight-knit social communities. Each episode delves into the identity, playstyle, and goals of a different guild, offering a glimpse into what life is really like behind the banner.

  • Guild Name: Why Not
  • Alliance: Girth
  • Guild Leader: Mendo
  • Date Founded: July 19, 2024
  • Size: 200 members
  • Primary Language: English
  • Server: Albion Europe
  • Discord: discord.gg/RVZgEkvn4x
Tell us about your guild.

We started as a small group within a larger, non-English-speaking World Boss guild. When that guild disbanded, we stuck together and founded Why Not. We always fought with a goal in mind: becoming a guild that offers a wide range of content, without forgetting that we started as an honest World Boss guild, which is who we still are today.

Why did you choose this name? Is there a story or meaning behind it?

The name was chosen with someone who was supposed to be our second Guild Master, but who left before we started. There wasn’t any special meaning behind it; we just needed a name quickly to place a hideout for a World Boss war and went with the first one we agreed on. When the guild became a serious project, we decided the name wasn’t so bad after all.

What sort of activities do you focus on?

We began as a World Boss guild aiming to provide the best Fame farm in the game. But given the stereotypes around World Boss guilds, I decided that if we survived our first major war, we’d diversify. We now offer roaming PvP, ganking, and more. We’ve even tried ZvZs, though with mixed results so far.

What sort of members are you looking for?

We care more about quality than quantity. We’re looking for players who enjoy playing together and want to improve in both small-scale PvP and ZvZ.

Where is your guild primarily located?

We’re based around Thetford, which is where we originally started playing. We’ve stayed there ever since, regardless of how politics have shifted.

Do you have any rivalries or ongoing quarrels with other guilds?

Our entire history is full of rivalries, wars, and conflicts. The guild itself was born in the middle of a major World Boss dispute. Since then, we’ve been drawn into many others, too many to list here. Join the guild and I’ll give you the full two-hour lecture myself! (I’m a professional chatter and meeting disbander.)

What are some of your most memorable battles or activities?

One of the most unforgettable moments was getting scammed out of an estimated 2 billion Silver by a member we trusted too much. It could have broken us, as it hurt our regears and overall economy, but our members stuck around, and generous friends like Akleel and Tetta helped us recover with loans and donations. What I find memorable about this is not the fact that we got scammed, but that our members and friends stood by us and helped us get back up!

Another highlight was when my right-hand man Danyv1 joined, along with other close friends. Without his constant positivity and dedication, we wouldn’t be where we are today. (He helped write these answers, except this one, which I snuck in while he wasn’t looking!)

What does your guild do for fun?

We don’t usually organize activities outside the game, but we aim to provide a variety of ingame content. We may soon start some community events as well.

What is your guild's approach to the game? Do you have any core values or beliefs that guide how you play together?

We take a midcore approach: we want our players to improve and play well, but not at the cost of fun or sanity. Communication, contribution, and common sense are essential to how we play together.

What are your goals for the future?

We haven’t had the time to decide our end goals since there’s always something new happening. But our long-term dream is to keep building a space where people enjoy playing together, with both fun and dedication. As for next season? Who knows! We’re definitely not aiming for leaderboard rankings.

Anything else to share about your guild?

I think that the thing we are most proud of is being one of the longest-standing World Boss guilds to exist on the EU Server, as well as the beautiful community we’ve managed to create. On the technical level, I must mention the crazy well-coded script that our friend Luis spent (and still spends) time on: thanks to it, we are able to track people’s activity and contribution, handle tickets, issue rewards, and much, much more! Without his constant help, we would be spending more time on Discord than enjoying the game!

Name the Antiquarian’s Pet and Win Prizes!

If you’ve visited the Antiquarian’s Den in Albion, there’s a good chance you’ve met an adorable little creature down there. No, not the Antiquarian, but the Antiquarian’s cute companion – a friendly Baby Soulspinner. Ask what this sidekick is called, though, and you’ll just be met with a shrug. The poor thing doesn’t even have a name!

So it’s time for you, the players, to fix that. Until July 10 we’re running a contest where you get to choose this humble hatchling’s name, with the winning entry visible ingame for all to see! To enter, you need to take a screenshot of your character with the Antiquarian’s Soulspinner, and propose a name for it. For full details, and to take part, see this forum thread.

As well as the opportunity to have your creativity etched into history, there are a bunch of other prizes on offer too – here’s the full list:
  • First place: Your chosen name immortalized ingame, and an exclusive Albion Online merch pack
  • Second place: The Corrupted Preacher Vanity Bundle and 30 days Premium
  • Third place: Either the Corrupted Preacher Vanity Bundle or 30 days Premium
We’re excited to see what you come up with, so get your creative juices flowing and show us what you’ve got. Let’s give this creature the name it deserves!

A Live Q&A is Coming July 8

The Abyssal Depths update is now live, and many of you are diving into the Depths, earning the trust of the Antiquarian, and raising your cute baby Soulspinners into bloodthirsty mounts. And while all this is going on, we’re excited to announce a special, live Q&A with the developers coming soon!

On July 8 at 17:00 UTC, Game Director Moritz Bokelmann and Co-Creative Director Michael Schwahn will be live on AlbionTV (twitch.tv/albiononline) to answer your questions about what goes into designing and deploying an update, the release process, how feedback is incorporated into development, and more. So if there’s something you’ve been burning to ask, this is your opportunity to join the stream and have your question answered live!

This Q&A is part of the Albion Unlocked initiative, where we offer new ways for you to connect with the team. Tune into the livestream on July 8, and stay tuned to hear about more upcoming events!
