Historical Personalities in Fight for Freedom #1: Sir Winston Churchill

It is 1940, and the world is no longer on the precipice of disaster, but barrelling towards it at full speed. The European countries are falling before the “Greater Germanic Reich” one by one, and soon, the United Kingdom stands alone, with its biggest “victory” to date being merely a successful rescue of its expeditionary forces from total annihilation.

It is 1940, and one can only wonder what is going through the head of the new Prime Minister as he is sitting at the broadcasting station after more than a few shots of liquid courage, reading out his promise: ”We shall prove ourselves once again able to defend our Island home, to ride out the storm of war, and to outlive the menace of tyranny. If necessary, for years. If necessary, alone.”

Before the Allies, before the massive Soviet manpower and the endless stream of American materiel all but sealing the Third Reich’s fate, it took faith to stand up to the tyranny - faith that few except Sir Winston Churchill had.

Winston Churchill was arguably the man that created the Grand Alliance, and rallied the free nations of the world in their darkest hour.

Descended from wealthy aristocracy, Winston Churchill joined the British Army in 1895. Serving as a war correspondent in the more exotic corners of the Empire, such as the British India and South Africa, he made a name for himself through his complex and colorful writing. His speeches throughout the whole Second World War, insightful and endlessly quotable, helped keep the beleaguered nation’s morale high: the image of a resolute leader with dry wit and a stiff upper lip was as important as the weapons and tanks.

Energetic and daring, contemporaries claim Chruchill believed himself to be “a man of destiny”, fated to do great things. It was this conviction, perhaps, that allowed him to stand up to Hitler’s Germany with such determination, make the seemingly irreconcilable USA and USSR put their differences aside, and see the war through until the very end.

“You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word: It is victory, victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory, however long and hard the road may be”.
