Units in Fight for Freedom #18: American Jet Fighters - P-80 Shooting Star

In mid-1943 when the Germans were already making impressive progress on their jet fighters. Still far from fully operational, the new machines showed great promise - and posed a massive threat: it was clear that whoever mastered the turbojet technology first would come to dominate the skies.

The U.S. War Department issued a call to action, and Lockheed’s Clarence Johnson answered. After countless hours of exhausting overtime, under strictest secrecy and dictatorial discipline, Johnson’s hand-picked crew created the prototype for P-80 “Shooting Star” - the first American jet fighter.

Slick futuristic silhouette, potential speed up to 600 mph/965 kph (living up to its nickname), and six .50-caliber machine guns - P-80A, the first mass-produced model, was both the beauty and the beast. Sadly, the jet was developed too late to see any frontline combat in WWII, but just in time for the wars to come.

The next variant, P-80B, had a better engine, thicker armor and could carry unguided missiles. It was the terror of the early stages of the Korean War.

All jet fighters in Strategic Mind - the German Me-262, the Soviet MiG-9, the British Gloster Meteor, and finally the US P-80A and P-80B are far superior to all previous non-jet models. So, they provide a very solid boost to your air force capabilities.
