Historical Personalities in Fight for Freedom #1: Sir Winston Churchill

It is 1940, and the world is no longer on the precipice of disaster, but barrelling towards it at full speed. The European countries are falling before the “Greater Germanic Reich” one by one, and soon, the United Kingdom stands alone, with its biggest “victory” to date being merely a successful rescue of its expeditionary forces from total annihilation.

It is 1940, and one can only wonder what is going through the head of the new Prime Minister as he is sitting at the broadcasting station after more than a few shots of liquid courage, reading out his promise: ”We shall prove ourselves once again able to defend our Island home, to ride out the storm of war, and to outlive the menace of tyranny. If necessary, for years. If necessary, alone.”
Sir Winston Churchill
Before the Allies, before the massive Soviet manpower and the endless stream of American materiel all but sealing the Third Reich’s fate, it took faith to stand up to the tyranny - faith that few except Sir Winston Churchill had.

Winston Churchill was arguably the man that created the Grand Alliance, and rallied the free nations of the world in their darkest hour.

Descended from wealthy aristocracy, Winston Churchill joined the British Army in 1895. Serving as a war correspondent in the more exotic corners of the Empire, such as the British India and South Africa, he made a name for himself through his complex and colorful writing. His speeches throughout the whole Second World War, insightful and endlessly quotable, helped keep the beleaguered nation’s morale high: the image of a resolute leader with dry wit and a stiff upper lip was as important as the weapons and tanks.

Energetic and daring, contemporaries claim Chruchill believed himself to be “a man of destiny”, fated to do great things. It was this conviction, perhaps, that allowed him to stand up to Hitler’s Germany with such determination, make the seemingly irreconcilable USA and USSR put their differences aside, and see the war through until the very end.

“You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word: It is victory, victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory, however long and hard the road may be”.

Weekly Feature #3: Reinforcement

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]
Hello guys! Today, we will explain how the Reinforcement mechanic works in the Strategic Mind series.
It allows you to bring the Strength of your troops back up during the operations, but it comes at a cost. Watch the episode to learn more.
About the Weekly feature series
The Strategic Mind series has a quite sophisticated set of core mechanics, some of which are a novelty for the genre, for example, the supply system. The upside is that the game has lots to explore even for seasoned wargame veterans and offers everyone a new experience. The downside is that oftentimes the players lack the time to master all the core mechanics, especially after a hard working week, when you want to spend more time with your family during the weekend.

We have decided to start a new series of short tutorial videos called Weekly feature. In this series, we will have a closer look at one core mechanic at a time. We hope that it will help the new players to grasp the game faster, and the veteran players to learn a couple of new tricks. For example, we will explain in more detail the Surrender mechanic or the damage calculation rules. It should be especially helpful to the players who are new to the wargame genre.

If the video was helpful for you - let us know in the comments here or on YouTube and leave a "like". You could also subscribe to our YouTube channel to make sure you do not miss the next episodes. Also, if you want to ask us some additional questions about the mechanics - you are most welcome!

Have a good weekend!

Units in Fight for Freedom #13: Sherman Tank Variations

Who doesn’t know the Sherman? One of the most widely-deployed tanks of WWII, with a memorable and recognizable profile across its many modifications.

The Sherman medium tank was in many ways an experiment for the USA. In 1940 the British shortage of tanks was becoming worrisome, especially compared to the heavily mechanized German war machine. The American allies were willing to help, but didn’t have the capabilities for producing such vehicles yet - the first action the early Shermans saw was more of an extended field trial. Later, with its most glaring issues fixed, the Sherman proved itself to be a versatile, well-put together tank - and numerous modifications followed. A few of them are present in the Strategic Mind: Fight for Freedom.

Sherman M4A1

Sherman M4A1 was the first major model, armed with a 75mm cannon. Staggering 6000+ machines were produced, with about half as many Sherman M4A176(W) modifications to follow. Largely the same vehicle, it was up-armed with a 76mm cannon - a solid choice at the time.

Sherman M4A1 in the game: has less armor than a British Churchill tank, but has more move points, making a more mobile unit, with decent firepower.

Sherman Firefly

The British Sherman Firefly, conversely, went far above “solid” - armed with a British 17-pounder, it became a renowned “tank killer”, the only Allied tank capable of knocking out German Tigers and Panthers.

Sherman Firefly in the game: as in real history, at some point Sherman Firefly becomes the best weapon against the German Heavy armor and is capable of dealing heavy damage to the Tigers and other late war German units. It has the best anti-tank weapon among the UK units, but lacks in armor - in that regard it is similar to German Panther tank. Similarly it gets “Overwatch hard” ability, that allows it to auto attack the enemy armor within range.

M4A3E2 "Jumbo"

M4A3E2 "Jumbo" was an “assault variant” - a heavy tank designed for overrunning German fixed fortifications. It took point more often than not, and while far from invincible, it fared well under heavy fire - much better than lighter tanks would have.

M4A3E2 "Jumbo" in the game: unlike Sherman Firefly, it has mediocre gun, but very thick armor that rivals that of the Tiger tanks. So, while Firefly matches Tiger firepower, Jumbo matches it in terms of armor capabilities.

M4A3E8 “Easy Eight”

M4A3E8 “Easy Eight” was one of the more successful modifications, upgraded in most of its aspects, and retained in service long after WWII.

M4A3E8 “Easy Eight” in the game: the “Easy Eight” combines the best of both worlds - it has a solid weapon and decent armor.

The game about Finland - what do you think?

We have recently announced the next title in the Strategic Mind series - Strategic Mind: Spirit of Liberty. It is dedicated to Finland in WW2 and featuring three wars: Winter War, Continuation War, and Lapland War. We are very enthusiastic about the topic, as we think that the story of Finland defending its land against the overwhelmingly numerous and powerful enemy is like a story from a legend. However, before the announcement, we have discussed this project with several industry experts, and they voiced concerns that Finland in WW2 is not as popular of a topic as Germany or Allies, so the project is unlikely to be successful. We had similar concerns in our team, but all things considered, we decided to dare it and go for this project. We would like to know what you, guys, think.

Here is what we think awesome about WW2 wargame dedicated to Finland:
1. Awesome story - a solid basement for great narrative
Winter War: over 500,000 Soviet soldiers attack Finland, a country with a population of 3,700,000, and the Finns drive them back, inflicting 5 times their own casualties. Continuation War: the Reds return with a total strength of 1,500,000 - almost half of the entire Finnish population - and the Finns stop them again. Finland’s survival in these two brutal wars against an enemy so vast was a true historical miracle.

We want to tell the outstanding and heroic story of brave Finnish people fending off the much stronger adversary several times over the course of WW2. Tell about the struggle and all the difficulties they had to face in their battle for survival.
2. Historical background - good material for two campaigns
Historical campaign. Follows a number of operations throughout the 1939-1945 timeline, spanning three wars: Winter War, Continuation War, and Lapland War. The historical campaign will have smaller-scale but action-packed operations, covering all of the iconic historical battles.

Alternate history campaign. A shorter campaign with larger operations centered around the “what if” events. Help the Germans take Leningrad, cut off the allied aid shipments to USSR by taking the port of Murmansk - that is only the beginning.
3. Unique atmosphere - brought through narrative, soundtrack, and cinematics
We will try our best to immerse you into the time of this heroic struggle. To that end, we will have over 60 minutes of plot-driven cinematics with historic figures such as Baron Carl Mannerheim, President Risto Ryti, and others. As well as, special historic soundtrack, that would recreate the most iconic music of the time for the game, such as:

- Vapaussoturin Valloituslaulu:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEtyScs6djU
- Njet Molotoff!:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jl2_0OCwNbg
Will the players be interested in the topic dedicated to Finland in WW2? There is no better way to know than to ask them directly. That is why we ask the community: would you like to play such a strategy game? Let us know what you think.
