Update 04-22

Disclaimer

Unfortunately, the friends notification system has been more complex than originally anticipated which, coupled with one of our engineers being absent, has caused some delay in our backlog.
As a result, we intend to finish shipping the friends notification toggle and multibuy features promised last month, and would like to apologize for the delay.

Balance changes

This release, just like any other, will bring some balance changes.

  • Herald’s Hymn’s ability now grants 2/3/4/5/6 (up from 1/2/3/4/5).
  • Rimelings now cost 4 mana (down from 5) and gain 2 mana (down from 3).
  • Conflicted Drakes’ ability now deals 2/2/3/3/4 (up from 1/1/2/2/3).
  • Temple of the Mind’s strength is now 3/4/5/6/7 (up from 2/3/4/5/6).
  • Bounded Daemons’ strength is now 3/4/4/5/6 (up from 2/3/3/4/5).
  • Diehards now cost 3 mana (down from 4).
  • Martyr Spongers’ movement is now 1 (up from 0).
  • Flameless Lizards’ strength is now 7/8/10/12/14 (down from 7/9/11/13/16).

As usual, some compensation in the form of coins and fusion stones will be provided to owners of Flameless Lizards, proportional to the level and rarity of the card. Find below the compensation values for each rarity and level.

New cards

There will be two new neutral legendary heroes introduced next month: Gray the Balancer on April 3rd and Siro the Resurrector on April 17th. There will also be an alternative to Execution in the form of a new spell: Demotivation Strike.

DEMOTIVATION STRIKE

Silence a target unit then deal x damage

Mana: 4
Ability: 3/4/5/6/7

SIRO THE RESURRECTOR (ANCIENT HERO)

Before moving, respawn x surrounding non‑legendary friendly unit destroyed since the beginning of the turn

Mana: 7
Str: 7/8/10/12/15
Mov: 1/1/1/1/1
Ability: 1/2/3/4/ALL

GRAY THE BALANCER (ANCIENT HERO)

Before moving, destroy the weakest unit from the player who has most units on the board

Mana: 4
Str: 4/5/6/7/8
Mov: 1/1/1/1/1

As usual, there will be exclusive packs for every new card to get immediate copies as well as 750 coins and 5 fusion stones.

NEW BRAWLS

Similar to what we did in the last months, we will introduce 3 new Brawl modifiers for the 3 new cards. We think it’s a good way for you to be able to try, play with and enjoy newly added cards before you start collecting them.

Like last time, a 0-mana level 1 (unless owned and leveled) copy of the new card will be added to everyone’s deck (thus causing all decks to have 13 cards). If you also have that card in your base deck, it will cost 0 mana as well.

  • The Warrior Brawl starting on the April 14th will be for Demotivation Strike.
  • The Warrior Brawl starting on the April 21st will be for Siro the Resurrector.
  • The Warrior Brawl starting on the April 28th will be for Gray the Balancer.

Cheapened Brawl

The Brawl starting on April 15th (and only that one) is going to be cheaper. All fights will be 50% off. Owners of the Premium Pass will also have their usual discount applied, leading to a 60% reduction.

Easter offers

As usual, exclusive packs will be available from April 1st until April 5th:

  • Ament pack ($9.99): 3 Mythic Tomes, 2 Heroic Tomes, 1 Classic Tome, 500 coins and 1 exclusive avatar
  • Helpful Bunny pack ($19.99): 20 rare cards, 15 epic cards, 10 legendary cards and 1 exclusive avatar
  • Easter Edrik pack ($49.99): 650 rubies, 6500 coins and 1 exclusive avatar

Note that the following 3 avatars will no longer be available after Easter. This is the only way to unlock them, so be sure to seize it!

All rubies offer from the shop will be boosted, by 5% for the cheapest one, all the way to 50% for the highest one. This will last between April 14th and April 17th (end of the Brawl).

English copy improvements

I recently undertook going through all card abilities to improve their English version in an effort to make them more consistent and readable. I then pitched it to our development team to bring these changes to the game itself, which has been accepted.

These changes will be slowly rolled out in all languages in the next few months. Please be patient and it takes a significant amount of time to apply such transversal changes in so many languages.

In the meantime, here are the newly defined guidelines for English content on both Stormbound and Stormbound-Kitty.

Locale

  • Stormbound uses American English over British English. There are subtle differences between the two languages. The most relevant ones for our project are:
  • Words with an ending similar to “vitalize” are spelled with a “z”.
  • Words with an ending similar to “defense” are spelled with a “s”.
  • Words with an ending similar to “color” are spelled without a “u”.
  • The word “canceled” is spelled with a single ”l”.

Capitalization

  • Unit types (e.g. Feline) and modifiers (i.e. Ancient, Hero and Elder) should be capitalized.

Card abilities

  • An ability should never end with a full stop, no matter whether it is made of several sentences.
  • The word “all” should be omitted when possible as it is implied.
  • The term “on the board” should be omitted as it is implied.
  • The term “to fight for x” should be omitted as it is implied.
  • The term “itself” should be preferred over “this”.
  • The term “Before attacking” should be preferred over “When attacking”.

Pluralization

  • The words “damage” and “strength” are never pluralized.

Highlighting

  • Main actions should be highlighted (i.e. “build”, “command”, “confuse”, “convert”, “deal”, “deconfuse”, “decrease”, “destroy”, “disable”, “drain”, “draw”, “explode”, “fly”, “force”, “freeze”, “gain”, “give”, “increase”, “jump”, “move”, “play”, “poison”, “pull”, “push”, “remember”, “remove”, “restore”, “return”, “set”, “spawn”, “spend”, “split”, “teleport”, “trigger”, “vitalize”).
  • Amounts (whether variadic or not) should be highlighted with their unit (e.g. “1/2/3/4/5 strength”, “1 unit”, “1/2/3/4/5 damage”, etc.).
  • The words “bordering" and “surrounding” should be highlighted.

Acknowledgement

Kind thanks to DVRP#5076 for their ground work in their SBLocPatcher repository. A significant amount of the implemented changes were suggested by them.

COMPENSATION

Over the last month, there were a few issues related to one of our service providers performing a framework update. This may have resulted in decreased performance, which was aggravated by the fact that the release of the Draft Mode caused more players than usual to play.

We did our best to roll out quick fixes to bring back the game to a playable state, with only occasional performance drops in specific cases. With the community’s help, we have identified all remaining issues and fixed them one by one, both via backend updates and client releases.

Nevertheless, we would like to apologize for the issues you’ve faced and issue a small gift in compensation.
  • We will enable a “double coin event” during the first week of February. Matches will yield twice as many coins, and the coin cap will be raised to 800 coins (1,400 coins for Premium Pass holders) for that week.
  • The Brawl event for that week will be half the price (see Cheapened Brawls below).
  • Every player logging into the game at least once during the first week of February will be granted 1 free entry card for the Draft mode.
CHEAPENED BRAWLS

The Brawl starting on February 3rd and the Brawl starting on Fabruary 17th are going to be cheaper. All fight will cost 50% of their original price.

QUALITY OF LIFE IMPROVEMENTS
We are happy to introduce a handful of bug fixes as will interface improvements in this release, starting with the friends notifications toggle. When turned off, other players cannot send you invites.

You will now be able to mark cards as favorite within your collection, as well as sort it with favorite cards first. This should help players frequently making new decks by letting them rapidly add their must-include cards!

Last but not least, the community menu will now provide a direct link to the release notes on the site. We hope this helps new player learn more about the release cycle we have, as well as the latest changes to the game.

Both of these improvements will be implemented on the February 7th.

FAQ When is the update going to be released?

The balance changes will be deployed with the season reset as usual. The 2 cards will be introduced on February 7th and February 21st. The Valentine’s offer will be available between February 14th and February 20th. The UI improvements will land on February 7th.

DRAFT MODE

The draft mode is finally here! There is a lot to explain, so we’re going to do that bit by bit, so it’s digestible.

  1. Synopsis
  2. Terminology
  3. How to enter
  4. Rewards
  5. Matchmaking
  6. Drafting a deck
  7. Leveling up cards
  8. Replacing cards
Synopsis
In a nutshell, the draft mode is an event where players compete in a series of matches with a unique deck that gets “drafted” specifically for the event. Cards may get swapped or upgraded after every match, leading to previously unseen decks and hopefully some different strategies from your typical ladder gameplay.

The draft runs weekly from Monday to Wednesday (therefore without overlap with the Brawl). Each player is able to play up to 3 draft “sessions” in order to get rewards during that timeframe. After which, it is still possible to play draft mode until the event ends, but without rewards — just for fun (while still earning coins for victories, as usual).

A session ends when the player wins 6 matches or loses 3 times, which ever comes first, leading to sessions lasting between 3 and 8 matches.

Terminology

  • Session: A series of up to 8 matches ending with the player having lost 3 times, or the player having won 6 matches, based on the same drafted deck.
  • Entry card: A special resource enabling the player to start a draft session.
How to enter
Only players with at least 11 base health can participate in the draft mode.

A draft session costs 1 “entry card”. Entry cards are special resources which are necessary to start a draft session. A player can have a maximum of 3 entry cards at a given time — that’s the upper cap for that resource. Entry cards can be obtained the following ways:

  • An entry card can be collected freely once a week by watching an ad in the card shop tab.
  • Entry cards can be bought for a few dollars. One entry card + 100 coins costs $2.99, two entry cards + 300 coins for $4.99.
  • An entry card can be skipped altogether by paying 600 coins to start a draft session.

Rewards
The content of the chest retrieved at the end of a draft session depends on how many matches the player won, between 0 and 6 (as well as whether or not they own the Premium Pass). Here is the content of the 7 different chests:

Rewards

0 wins - 2 common cards + 1 rare card
1 win - 3 common cards + 2 rare cards + 1 epic card + 1 fusion stone
2 wins - 4 rare cards + 2 epic cards + 2 fusion stones
3 wins - 4 rare cards + 2 epic cards + 3 fusion stones + 150 coins
4 wins - 4 epic cards + 2 legendary cards + 4 fusion stones
5 wins - 5 epic cards + 2 legendary cards + 5 fusion stones + 250 coins
6 wins - 4 epic cards + 3 legendary cards + 6 fusion stones + 600 coins

Premium Pass extras

0 wins - 50 coins + 1 fusion stone
1 win - 100 coins + 1 fusion stone
2 wins - 100 coins + 1 fusion stone
3 wins - 100 coins + 1 fusion stone + 1 epic card
4 wins - 150 coins + 1 fusion stone + 1 epic card
5 wins - 250 coins + 2 fusion stones + 1 legendary card
6 wins - 400 coins + 3 fusion stones + 1 legendary card

Additionally, it is worth noting that victories will yield 10 coins + an additional 10 coins for watching an ad or for having the Premium Pass, regardless of the league of the player.

Matchmaking
Players are matched based on the amount of battles they have done within their session. So players having fought 1 time will be matched with other players having fought only 1 match so far.

The pools widen for higher number of matches to make sure players can find opponents: so players played 5, 6 or 7 times are all in the same matchmaking pool.

This is important because the base health grows throughout matches (regardless of their outcome). All players start at 10 base health, and every match increases it by 1. This means the base health can never go above 17 (for the last match).

Drafting a deck
Drafting a deck is done at the beginning of the draft session and consists of picking a total of 12 cards, each time from a set of 3 different options.

Cards are always drafted at level 1, and all cards from the game can be drafted, regardless whether the player owns them or not. This truly puts all players on a level-playing field.

The draws happen in that order:

  1. 3 legendary cards from different factions, resulting in a faction choice
  2. 3 epic cards from your faction, resulting in an archetype choice
  3. 3 rare cards with a mana cost of 3 - from faction + neutral
  4. 3 rare cards with a mana cost of 4- from faction + neutral
  5. 3 rare cards from faction + neutral
  6. 3 rare cards from faction + neutral
  7. 3 common cards with a mana cost of 3- from faction + neutral
  8. 3 common cards with a mana cost of 4- from faction + neutral
  9. 3 common cards from faction + neutral
  10. 3 common cards from faction + neutral
  11. 3 epic cards from faction + neutral
  12. 3 legendary cards from the neutral faction

Note that for all rolls where the pool of cards is the current faction + the neutral faction, there will be at least one card from your faction, and at least one neutral card amongst the 3. This makes sure a roll doesn’t offer 3 neutral or 3 faction cards.

Leveling up cards
With every match, it is possible to refine the deck to make it more competitive. Regardless of the outcome of a match, it offers the ability to level up 3 cards from the deck.

Which cards can be upgraded is also drafted. That means each upgrade gets picked amongst 3 cards. There is also some logic to avoid the same card being upgraded on a loop while all other cards stay level 1. So all in all, the deck should improve somewhat uniformly throughout a session.

Replacing cards
Losing a match also provides the ability to replace a card from the deck. Because of the 3 loss limit, it is only possible to replace 2 cards in total.

Which card to replace is entirely up to the player, so any of the 12 cards can be discarded. In exchange, 3 level 1 cards from the same rarity get offered as options. This means replacing a leveled-up card will still yield a level 1 card.

FAQ

When is the update going to be released?
The balance changes will be deployed with the season reset as usual. The Draft mode will be released on December 20th — Merry Christmas!

Is it possible to abandon a draft session?
Not really. If you really want to give up on your current session, you can just lose matches until you’ve accumulated 3 losses. And if you don’t finish your session before the end of the event, it will be ended and you will be able to collect the rewards based on the amount of matches you won.

DISCLAIMER
The team is currently focusing most of its efforts onto the development of the upcoming Draft mode. We hope to be able to wrap it up in January!

We are also finalizing the new authentication system to let people sign in with their Google account or Apple ID. It will be possible to merge your Kongregate account to your new account (and vice versa). As a result, new players will no longer have to create a Kongregate account.

BALANCE CHANGES
This release, just like any other, will bring some balance changes.

Victors of the Melee’s strength is now 4/5/6/7/8 (up from 3/4/4/6/7).
Greenwood Ancients’ ability now grants 2/2/3/3/4 (up from 1/1/2/2/3).
Wetland Deceivers’ strength is now 3/4/5/6/7 (up from 3/4/4/5/6).
Scrapped Planners’ ability now sets strength back to 2/3/4/5/6 strength (down from 3/4/5/6/7).
Rain of Frogs now costs 2 mana at level 1 (down from 3) and its ability spawns 3 toads (down from 4).

As usual, some compensation in the form of coins and fusion stones will be provided to owners of Scrapped Planners, proportional to the level and rarity of the card.

NEW CARD
The day before Christmas (December 23rd), a new card will be released. It will join the few common cards with the ability to do chip damage!

MINION LAUNCHERS
Common, Rodent
4 Mana
0 Movement
4/5/6/7/8 Strength
On play, deal 1/2/2/3/3 damage to a random friendly non‑legendary unit on the side, then deal the same damage to the first enemy in front

As usual, there will be an exclusive pack to collect early copies of the new card. It will cost $9.99 and bring 10 copies of the card + 5 fusion stones + 750 coins. It will be available between December 23rd and January 1st.

CARD UPGRADING TUTORIAL
Upgrading card is essential to the Stormbound experience. However, it is not necessarily too obvious for new players how it works.

We are introducing a card upgrading tutorial for new players who have never upgraded any cards. The tutorial will guide them through the upgrading system and will make each player have a level 2 Gifted Recruits card at the end of it.

There is a second part of the tutorial that gives out 6 fusion stones, so players can decide themselves if they want to level up another common card right away or keep them for later.

CARD LEVEL CAP
A lot has been done to improve matchmaking over the last year, from algorithmic changes to base health caps. We are finally introducing a level cap based on the player’s league, the same way the fortress level cap works.

Starters League: Card level capped to 2
Iron League: Card level capped to 2
Bronze League: Card level capped to 2
Silver League: Card level capped to 3
Gold League: Card level capped to 3
Platinum League: Card level capped to 5
Diamond League: Card level capped to 5
Heroes League: Card level capped to 5

We hope this helps solving the matchmaking difficulties by leveling the play field on a per league basis.

FRIENDLY BATTLE NOTIFICATION
A small quality of life change is coming up: there will now be a small notification banner when a friend invites you for a match.

CHRISTMAS OFFERS
Like most holiday events, there will be some one-time only special offers for people willing to put some money into the game. The Christmas exclusive packs will be available from December 20th (9AM CET) until the end of the next Brawl!

The 3 packs from last year will come again this year!

Christmas Tree Pack ($9.99): 3 Mythic Tomes + 2 Heroic Tomes + 1 Classic Tome + 500 coins
Helpful Elf pack ($19.99): 20 rare cards + 15 epic cards + 10 legendary cards
Santa Edrik pack ($49.99): 6,500 coins + 650 rubies

And two new exclusive packs will be introduced!

Christmas pack ($19.99): 15 copies of Minion Launchers + a special avatar + 200 rubies + 10 fusion stones
Sapphire Bundle ($6.99): 1 book of Temples + 25 fusion stones. This one pack can be bought as many times as desired!

The special avatar from the Christmas Pack will be a Christmas Minion, which will be unavailable past the event. If you want it or desire to flaunt your swag in front of your friends, this is now or never!

On top of that, all books (including Noble, but not the Humble book) will yield an extra card until the end of the Christmas event. Similarly, the paid bundles yielding coins and rubies will grant +30% more resources for the duration of the Christmas event.

Last but not least, matches will yield twice as many coins, and the coin cap will be raised to coin 800 coins (coin 1,400 coins for Premium Pass holders) for the duration of the event.

CHEAPENED AND SPECIAL BRAWL
Similar to previous events, the Brawl starting on Christmas 20th (and only that one) is going to be cheaper. All fights will be 50% off. Owners of the Premium Pass will also have their usual discount applied, leading to a 60% reduction.

Something quite unique about this Brawl will be the introduction of a new modifier (in all difficulties). A 0-mana cost level 1 (unless owned and leveled) Minion Launchers card will be added to everyone’s deck (thus causing all decks to have 13 cards).

FAQ
- When is the update going to be released?
The balance changes will be deployed with the season reset as usual. The Christmas event itself (on which all the exclusive offers and bonuses are bound) will start on Christmas 20th and end with the next Brawl, on the following Sunday.
