Art thou fool or Devil? Dare you take a boat ride to Wicked Isle, available now

Wicked Isle, the first story expansion for Atomfall®, is available now. This new pack adds the Midsummer Island location to the game together with a host of new leads, characters, enemies, weapons, items and more for you to discover. You may even uncover new potential endings for the main story.

Included as part of the Deluxe Edition, and available for separate purchase on all platforms, Wicked Isle digs deeper into the folk horror elements of Atomfall as you take a boat ride across the dark and lonely waters of the lake in Wyndham Village to reach Midsummer Island.

Rebellion’s Head of Design, Ben Fisher, gave us an insight into the making of Wicked Isle and what you are going to find there in our latest gameplay showcase:

To access Wicked Isle you need to head to docks on the shore in Wyndham and find Bill Anderson, a boatman who's an expert at navigating the treacherous waters of Lake Wyndhamere. As you approach, Bill will call you over, asking for help locating something he’s lost. This is where your journey to Midsummer Isle begins.

Once you agree to help Bill, he will take you over to the island and give you your first lead. From hereon in it is up to you to explore as you like.

Set close to the Windscale Atom Plant and shrouded by fog, you will quickly find that the disaster has taken its toll on Midsummer Island with infection rife, affecting both the environment and those that live there.

While you are on the island you are going to meet a host of colourful new characters and enemies. A deranged druid cult has become even more powerful through their pagan rituals while roaming bandits have embraced the island’s nautical past and strange creatures lurk in the watery depths.

To survive you are going are going to have to make use of the new weapons and items you will find as you explore. This includes a devastating Blunderbuss shotgun which inflicts huge damage but has a limited range as well as a cutlass and some strange ritualistic weapons. There is also an upgraded metal detector to find as well as a host of new skills, including Decomposition, a powerful ability that causes enemies to rapidly dissolve into fungal spores after a takedown.

There is much more for you to discover once you cross the lake to Midsummer Island, but we will leave you to explore and find them for yourselves.

Atomfall is getting a spooky DLC set on an offshore island that also lets you blast pretend pirates with a blunderbuss

Atomfall wasn't as good as it could have been when it launched in March, mainly due to its barebones combat and anaemic stealth and survival systems. But I nonetheless enjoyed exploring Rebellion's eerie take on the Lake District while unravelling the mystery behind the catastrophe at the Windscale Power Plant. I'd be more than happy to ramble through a little extra of that world, and it just so happens that more Atomfall will wash up on the Cumbrian coast next week...

Atomfall's first expansion takes you to a wicked new island when it arrives next week

Developer Rebellion Developments revealed a first look at Atomfall's first DLC expansion yesterday. Titled Wicked Isle, it unsurprisingly brings you to an island called Midsummer Island that is, in fact, a bit wicked, but like, in the bad way, not in the something a teen in the 2000s would say about something they like kind of way. Specifically it'll have a bit more of a folk horror vibe to it, which I'm certainly into conceptually. Lots of great folklore in the UK, as long as it's not stepping over frequently trodden upon territory.

Drawing on the folk horror elements of the game for inspiration, the story expansion is set on Midsummer Island. To cross to the island players must talk to the boat-keeper who can be found on the jetty in Wyndham Village. He will give you information about the island as well as your first Lead.

“Midsummer is located close to the Windscale Atom Plant and as a result the levels of infection in both the people and environment are higher than on the mainland,” explained Ben Fisher, Head of Design at Rebellion. “You are going to meet new enemy factions including pirate bandits and infected druids. To help you survive there are new weapons to be found on the island including a devastating Blunderbuss shotgun, a new bow, cutlass, daggers and the Beekeeper’s Staff. You will also be able to acquire new skills which will aid you on your quest as well as an upgraded metal detector which will enable you find even more loot caches.”

The Leads you uncover in Wicked Isle will open a variety of story threads, some of which create new potential endings for the main Atomfall® game.

Included in the Deluxe Edition and in the Deluxe Upgrade Pack and available to purchase separately when released (£14.99, €19.99, $19.99), Wicked Isle will be available from June 3rd on PC via Steam.

A UK-based post-apocalyptic survival-action game, Atomfall® is inspired by the real life Windscale nuclear incident in the 1950s. Players will embark on a fictionalised adventure meeting a cast of weird and wonderful characters as they try to uncover the mystery and escape the quarantine zone. So far over 2.5 million players have jumped into the world of Atomfall®.

Atomfall® is available now on PC via Steam. Atomfall® is Certified on Steam Deck.

"Can we find the resources to do it? I don't know" Rebellion's CEO on the likelihood of an Atomfall sequel

I always find it a bit odd when people make comparisons like "new game is the next game you really love" because you're most likely setting yourself up for some kind of disappointment. Atomfall was the most recent game to fall victim to such a framing, with many dubbing it as British Fallout, which it didn't end up being, nor was it likely intended to be. Thus, alongside some other issues, it's had a general reception of "yeah, it's not bad", which in a world of sequels upon sequels isn't always the response a developer might want. Still, a sequel is still clearly on developer Rebellion's mind.
