Age of Empires esports is very much alive, as London Wololo beats AO2 and 4 records

As a League of Legends enthusiast that's writing this article in a Fnatic t-shirt, I'm very much of the mind that esports isn't dead. Oftentimes seen as a fad that came and went in the early 2020s, competitive gaming is certainly its own niche with its own problems, but it's here to stay. When you think of esports, however, you conjure up an image of the fast-paced action of a Counter-Strike Major, or the glitz and glamor of League of Legends Worlds. You don't immediately think of Age of Empires 2, a strategy game that was first released in 1999. But AoE esports is thriving, and Red Bull Wololo: Londinium proves it.

Age fans from around the world have gathered to watch Red Bull Wololo: Londinium live! This year's tournament will feature top players from Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition and Age of Empires IV competing for a massive $250,000 total prize pool.

The event spans six days, marching through three incredible venues. The journey begins at the Red Bull Gaming Sphere in Shoreditch for the Group Stage, continues to ODEON Luxe Leicester Square for the Playoffs, and ends in a spectacular Grand Final at the Royal Albert Hall, where a live 40‑piece orchestra performs the iconic Age of Empires soundtrack as more than 3,000 fans witness the grand finale.

  • Routine server updates and maintenance.

[h3]DETAILS[/h3]This coming Wednesday, March 25th, the platform team will be taking the multiplayer servers down for a backend fix needed after the last maintenance. Please note:

  • Ranked matchmaking will disabled exactly one hour before the maintenance window to prevent disruption to newly-formed matches.

  • Any matches still in progress at the start of the maintenance window will be disrupted when it begins.

  • DURING THE MAINTENANCE WINDOW, YOU WILL STILL BE ABLE TO LAUNCH THE GAME, BUT WILL NOT BE ABLE TO MATCHMAKE OR ACCESS ANY ONLINE FEATURES.

To prevent any interruptions, we recommend wrapping up any games at least 10 minutes before the maintenance window. The downtime is expected to last between 1 and 2 hours. You can watch this thread with any changes to the schedule as they arise, as well as the all-clear when the maintenance is complete.

IMPORTANT: This maintenance will operate differently from typical server maintenance windows.

  • Online matchmaking will NOT be disabled 1 hour before this maintenance window- the in game countdown will not appear.

  • Ongoing matches will NOT be impacted by this server maintenance. Any matches still in progress at the start of the maintenance window will continue normally while the server maintenance is taking place.

  • During the maintenance window, you will still be able to launch the game, but will not be able: matchmake, create, or join new lobbies.


The downtime is expected to last between 1 and 2 hours. You can watch this thread with any changes to the schedule as they arise, as well as the all-clear when the maintenance is complete.
