Campaign, Skirmish, and Multiplayer: the Full Chronicles Experience!
Chronicles: Alexander the Great features a grand campaign of 18 richly-detailed scenarios, with animated cutscenes, new original music, and unlike any previous expansions – Chronicles: Alexander the Great dedicates a full campaign to one extraordinary figure!

But, your Chronicles experience doesn’t end there! Like its predecessor, Alexander the Great features three unique civilizations for you to enjoy in Skirmish against AI opponents, or in multiplayer custom games with your friends. These new civilizations can be played against each other to re-create the battles of the ancient world—or against the other civilizations from Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition!
Hoplite vs. Samurai – Battle Across Time!
A skirmish lobby including civilizations from Chronicles, and the mainline Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition.

The newly introduced Chronicles civilizations can be played against ANY of the Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition civilizations in Skirmish, or in multiplayer custom games. You can even set a match to Antiquity Mode, allowing the expanded Chronicles-style water trade and oysters on water maps, to experiment with how the AoE II:DE civilizations would handle the ancient world!

With this cross-play between Chronicles and mainline AoE II: DE you can create the ultimate battles to discover history’s greatest warriors, and finally answer age-old questions: “Would Spartans defeat Samurai? Could Alexander’s Companions conquer the Mangudai? Would the elephants of Puru stand toe-to-toe against Jaguar Warriors?”, it’s time to find out!
Immersive Units and Technologies – but Familiar!
Comparison of the Spartan, and Celts technology Tree. Pretty similar!

On the surface, Chronicles: Alexander the Great seems like an entirely different game from Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition. Macemen, Guardsmen, Lancers, and Laminated Bowmen may seem like new units to learn. Fortunately, these are only ancient versions of the regular base game units, renamed and reskinned to build immersion in the ancient setting of Chronicles.

Their stats, costs, bonuses, and more are exactly the same as their AoE II: DE equivalents—with Macemen sharing the same stat-line as Man-at-Arms, Laminated Bowmen the equivalent of Crossbowmen, and Lancers your ancient version of Knights. While we have introduced other units with fully unique roles, such as the Hoplite and the Phalangite, this core set of units will make Chronicles: Alexander the Great extremely accessible and easy to enjoy!

We also leaned into this theme with Technologies, providing new icons and names to immerse you in the ancient world, but their costs and benefits remain the same. Even your hotkeys will function the same way!
Twice the Unique Technologies – Replayability and Strategy!
Unlike their Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition counterparts, Chronicles civilizations have access to four total Unique Technologies. However, like in AoE II:DE, only one technology can be chosen in the third, and fourth Age; while you’ll still end up with the familiar single Unique Technology in each of the final two Ages, you’re able to customize your civilization as you journey through the Technology Tree!
A Novel Approach to Water – Dive in, the Water’s Warm!
While general gameplay remains similar in Chronicles, naval gameplay has received an overhaul. Additional ship types have been added to the game, creating a new rock-paper-scissors relationship to master. This changes naval combat in Chronicles to behave more like the land warfare from the mainline Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, creating additional depth and complexity.

The addition of Oysters as a water-based source of Gold, and the ability to use Trade Ships to collect Gold or Wood changes naval strategy in a meaningful way. Although you never have to play water maps in Chronicles: Alexander the Great, if you’re willing to dive right in, we think you’ll find the water in Chronicles quite enjoyable— pun intended!

You can read more about the changes to naval gameplay in our dedicated overview here: Expanding Naval Warfare in Chronicles
Battle for Greece, Alexander the Great, or Both!
If Chronicles: Alexander the Great is the first experience you want with the Chronicles series, that’s great! You can start Alexander the Great without owning, or having played Battle for Greece. The two expansions share the same Technology Tree, units, and more—but each is designed to be enjoyable on their own!

If you’re not ready to play the entire Chronicles series, you can start with either Alexander the Great, or Battle for Greece. The other will be there waiting for you, once you’re ready to resume conquering the ancient world!
An Epic Story
Whereas Battle for Greece covered the stories of multiple characters across a vast span of time, Alexander the Great focuses on a single, titular character. The result is a character study of far greater depth than has ever been attempted in the Age franchise, with a complex protagonist who grows and changes over the course of the adventure.

The geographical scope of the campaign is extraordinary: you’ll begin with Alexander as a young prince, fighting alongside his father to secure Greece and the territories surrounding the Kingdom of Macedon. From these rocky lands, you’ll invade the vast Persian Empire, fighting battles and besieging cities along the coast of Asia Minor and into the Levant. Then, strike into the Persian heartland to bring the Achaemenid King of Kings to heel; found a city in the distant Fergana Valley; experience the Punjab in monsoon season; traverse the rivers of India and embark on a voyage of discovery along the Persian Gulf.

All this is brought to life with the top-quality writing, voice acting, and cinematic presentation you’ve come to expect from Chronicles. The immersion is heightened with unique music playlists for every scenario, including 13 new and original tracks!
Innovative Gameplay
The amazing variety of locations and peoples you’ll encounter will certainly keep you on your toes in this campaign – but so too will the innovative and varied level designs. A key part of the Chronicles design philosophy is experimentation, and Alexander the Great is packed with one-of-a-kind experiences.

You’ll experience Alexander’s incredible siege of Tyre, a city perched upon an offshore island, by building and defending a vast causeway that stretches across the sea. You’ll construct the remote city of Alexandria Eschate in a fascinating scenario that plays like a city-builder game, ordering the construction of districts and generating resources from the settled population. You’ll recreate the voyage of Nearchos, sailing along the Persian Gulf with a Flagship which can train units, gathering supplies and discovering treasures along the way.
Improving on Battle for Greece
Chronicles is a project firmly rooted in the Age of Empires community – it was based on a beloved mod, and created by a team of community veterans including the creators of the invaluable CaptureAge tool. The feedback of the community has also been vital in guiding the development of Alexander the Great, with this sequel introducing a host of improvements.

Difficulty balancing is one key area of progress. Chronicles: Alexander the Great will have five difficulty levels, and each has been carefully calibrated to its target audience. Multiple large-scale difficulty tests, each with a wide range of players, were used to refine the balance of every level.

Alexander the Great also allows players to enjoy the game in more varied ways: for instance, the use of time pressure has been minimized to let players conquer at their own pace. The unique and varied level design style which characterizes Chronicles has been retained, while also ensuring that most scenarios allow players to fully explore the classic base building and resource gathering gameplay which are central to Age of Empires.

Get ready for a campaign experience like no other.
