v0.96.7: Dual Pistols + Year of the Super Ox Event



The Year of the Super Ox is here! The Super Beavers have replaced the Super Rat statue with a Super Ox statue in Bamboo resort and scattered Red Envelopes around the island for the celebrations. Trade them in for exclusive items in the Lunar New Year Shop.

We've also added the long requested ability to dual wield pistols! Just pick up a second pistol while holding a single pistol, and they'll automatically craft into Dual Pistols. Read the full patch notes below for all the details!

Dual Pistols




John Lick is here with all the math you need to calculate the type of Dual Pistols you'll get when you pick up a second pistol (while holding your first one) to automatically craft them into Dual Pistols.

If you want to check out some stylish slow-mo moves with the Dual Pistols, definitely also check out John Lick's video on Twitter.
  • Two Pistols craft into Dual Pistols at the higher rarity of the two.
  • Damage and bullet speed matches the Pistol (at the equivalent rarity), but clip size is increased to 20 and reloading takes a bit longer (1.3s).
  • New set of milestones and skins are also available to collect for the Dual Pistols.
  • Excellent for slow-mo montages.


More v0.96.7 Changes

[h3]Loot Adjustments[/h3]
  • Rebel Caches can now drop epic weapons. This should make opening them more exciting and rewarding.
  • Hidden rooms such as the Farm Rebel HQ, Sphinx, Super Stage piano, and Pyramid lab now have a guaranteed rare or higher weapon spawn (up to epic).
  • Epic weapons no longer spawn randomly in the world, aside from the epic pistol and in the aforementioned rooms. This change helps balance the rate with which epics were previously being found (ie easily spotted from the eagle).

[h3]Additional Cosmetic Item Changes[/h3]
  • The bamboo stick has been moved to Carl's Cart. It was previously a Legacy Lunar New Year item.
  • The Duos Day rose will be returning from Feb 12th 5pm PST to Feb 16th 5pm PST. Just play a Duos match to earn it!

[h3]Bamboo Resort[/h3]
  • Year of the Super Rat statue has been replaced by a new Year of the Super Ox statue.
  • New Super Ox photo on the wall alongside the Super Rat and Super Pig from previous years.
  • Community member Atuin (牛棚大師) has written a brand new Lunar New Year couplet for the front gates of Bamboo Resort! In English, it translates roughly to: Calves are young and strong, swamps and rain forests are magnificent and beautiful. / Once familiar land now gains a new look and feelings, thousands of animals are rejoicing. / Travel the world like a herd of cattle running on grassland, full of life.

[h3]Other Changes[/h3]
  • Adjusted uncommon AK and rare AK bullet speeds to be 180 and 188 (previously were 184 and 196).
  • Adjusted epic M16 and legendary M16 bullet speeds to be 196 and 204 (previously were 221 and 233).
  • Emoting in lobbies no longer has player collisions.
  • Hamster ball audio range increased from 140 to 160 units.
  • Reduced brightness on poison skunk gas slightly.
  • The Sniper and Dogna's Dart Gun now snap their aim instantly after reloading. This should reduce the issue of shooting after reloading, where the gun is still sideways from the animation.
  • Fixed a few spots on the map where players would get stuck.
  • Fixed a bug where Carl's Cart sometimes displayed template items.
  • Adjusted texture size and number of particles for Skunk Bombs.
  • Lobby timer will jump to 60s remaining if 32+ players join a match (if the time remaining is currently longer). This change was made to reduce time spent in lobbies slightly.

[h3]Private Matches Beta[/h3]
  • Added /hamball command which will spawn a hamster ball during a match. A limited number of them can be added total.
  • Added /juice and /tape commands to spawn health juice and super tape respectively.
  • Fixed a bug where the admin spectating wouldn't see utility items update when swapping between players.

v0.96.6: Super Seals Arrive in the Research Lab



Happy New Year, Super Animals! The team is back from the holidays and hard at work on the next big update for February, but we wanted to give you a little something fun to tide you over until then.

We hope you've all had a good start to your year and we can't wait to share more with you about what we have in the works for SAR! In the meantime, let's head over to the Research Lab where your favorite Lab Lab, Dr. Jennifer Dogna, has a new Super Animal to reveal...

Super Seal Joins the Fight

Super Seals and 3 additional breeds are now available to create at level 50 in the Research Lab:
  • Super Seal
  • Super Seal Pup
  • Super Sealion
  • Super Walrus

We're also making some improvements to the process of discovering new Super Animals:
  • Once you reach the required level to unlock new Super Animals, you'll be guaranteed to get an undiscovered animal's DNA as your next DNA drop (previously it was 25% chance to get the new animal DNA).
  • Note: DNA magnets still take precedence over undiscovered DNA until they're used up, but once your magnet's effect wears off, the undiscovered DNA will be guaranteed to drop at that point.
  • The Research Lab will also now display an exclamation mark when you get new animal DNA for the first time.

[h3]Other Changes[/h3]
  • Magnum and Deagle now have 3 shots under fixed recoil pattern (previously was 2 before going into random recoil).
  • Slipping on a banana will slide the player back to the actual server-side slip location, which fixes a hit registration issue.
  • Floss and wave emotes have been revamped to fix some occasional glitches that they tended to introduce alongside new animals/cosmetics.
  • Since the high ping mode threshold is at 250ms for now, we've added back the old high ping check on bullet hits (if a player is above 150 ping, the server will check if the person they shot is behind a wall currently, and if so then apply 50% damage reduction).
  • Fixed compression artifacts on the Stacked Hats.


We’ve also decided to extend the codes BIRTHDAY2020, CRISPRMAS, and NEWYEAR until this Sunday, January 17th to make sure you all have one last chance to get your paws on the cosmetics before they go away! See you all on the island, Super Animals.

CRISPRmas Event 2020

[h3]December 17th @ 5pm PST - January 10th @ 11:59pm PST[/h3]
  • Candy Canes are scattered around the island to collect and are also rewarded based on your time survived! Spend them in the CRISPRmas Shop, accessible from the news box in the main menu, to claim festive CRISPRmas cosmetic items. They also replenish a bit of health!
  • There are 8 new CRISPRmas cosmetic items to earn, and you can also earn 16 legacy 2019 items.
  • We've also designed 4 new festive premium items for the S.A.W. Shop.
  • Shop rotations are also moving to Thursdays at 5pm PST to line up with our updates better.
  • The Giant Eagle, Giant Emus, and Delivery Moles have all gotten in the CRISPRmas spirit, with festive outfits.
  • The fountain's CRISPRmas tree and music have returned! Many trees around the island have also been decorated for the event.

  • You'll find the winners of the Super Fanart Contest in the "Ephemeral" left wing, where the current exhibition showcases the 21 amazing winners of the All I Want for CRISPRmas Is You contest, as announced today in Super Animal Royale Tonight!

  • The “Eternal” right wing holds the museum's permanent collection of Super Animal Art, where you can see classics such as Vincent van Goat's Self Portrait, Rodint's The Stinker, and Pablo Pigasso's Three Moosicians amongst many others. You can not, unfortunately, see Leonardo DaFinchi's famous Mona Fleasa, as it has been missing ever since what legal only allows us to refer to as "The Incident."
  • The Chewffizi Cafe, named after the famous museum in Florence, features an Italian Renaissance theme, and one large, controversial painting: The Birth of Emus, by Sandro Goaticelli.
  • Once your visit to the museum is complete, you can visit the gift shop, "Exit This Way Only." The conspicuously named gift shop is, indeed, on the way out the door, but it’s not the only way. When asked about the misleading message, the park’s merchandise department has insisted, “we’re not suggesting that’s the only way to exit, that’s just what we decided to name the shop.”
  • SMOMA is on the plot of land previously occupied by the CRISPR Cafe, so it has been re-located to the west of the Super Animal Super Stage (added in our previous update).

Weapon Upgrade: Dogna's Dart Gun


  • The Poison Dart Gun has been renamed "Dogna's Dart Gun" and features an updated design to match its new secondary function: hitting teammates with a dart will heal them for 24 health over 2.0s.
  • If an ally is at full health, the dart will pass through them so that it can continue onward to potentially hit an enemy (to avoid annoying body blocking).
  • Healing from the darts does not stack (rapid hits only resets the timer).
  • Healing downed players is 50% effective, to match the reduced damage that they take.
  • Healing allies within skunk gas is also 50% less effective.
  • Shooting an enemy damages them for 10hp and adds a poison effect (unchanged effect).
  • Teammates now display health bars above their heads so it’s easier to tell which allies need help with healing.
  • A team healing stat has been added to the Stats screen.
  • The upgraded Dogna’s Dart Gun is designed to open up more ability for players who want to play a support role, which is especially fun in the S.A.W. vs Rebellion (32v32) mode.


S.A.W. vs Rebellion (32v32) Mode Returns With Changes
  • We felt that we had too many buffs from flag captures that were hard to keep track of and understand when the primary goal of capturing flags was to win, so we’ve made some changes:
  • The healing buff from capturing flags is now just local to the immediate surroundings around the flag, represented by a green circle around the flag. When you're inside the circle, you'll heal +4 health per second, however the regeneration does not apply to flags covered by skunk gas.
  • We’ve removed the flag buff on moving faster while knocked down and instead just raised the speed of moving while knocked down in general by 25% for everyone in this mode.
  • The victory timer is no longer halved when a team captures 4 flags. It was leading to matches ending too quickly, and the 3-flag timer already provides an accelerated end to the match.
  • Removed the rebel flag environment piece from the farm so it doesn't cause confusion with the actual flag (just in this mode).
  • Teammate's bananas won't affect you while capturing the flag and for 1s after capturing it.
  • When a squad dies early but their overall team wins later, that squad will get the win stat counted when the match ends. This only affects stats and not experience or rewards retroactively.
  • The limited-time mode will be available for the duration of the CRISPRmas event (until January 10th)!
  • We're activating all 4 modes simultaneously on NA and AS servers due to the growth in player population to support it! EU server is still a bit less populated, so to avoid splitting the player population too much, we're rotating Squads mode out temporarily in that region while 32v32 is active.


Additional v0.96.5 Improvements
  • Added some boxes/cover to the Super Stage biome, and adjusted some stage elements to improve gameplay.
  • Added more lighting to the environment during night mode (Superite crystals, stage poster walls, and others).
  • AK recoil while moving changed from +14% to +21%.
  • M16 recoil while moving changes from +20% to +32%.
  • Fixed hit registry with shooting players in the banana slip animation.
  • Fixed various hedges having collisions that didn't line up.
  • Can no longer ping items/caches that are covered in hidden rooms.
  • Some bots will be more aggressive in pursuing players.
  • Fixed bots picking up weapons while downed.
  • Performance improvement for graphics cards: reduced graphics overdraw by using tight sprite meshes on the environment art.
  • Controller plugin updated (hopefully fixes crashes related to foot pedals).
  • Private matches can set high ping mode to whichever threshold they prefer (command is /highping #)

v0.96.4: The stage is set for Super Possums and Super Pigeons



The stage is set for a brand new point of interest in Super Animal World, and some new trash animals are congregating outside for the big live premiere!

The show has continued to expand in scope over time, so if you want to save time you can safely skip straight to episode 3 and not miss much storytelling (although the pilot episode really highlights how much the production of the show has evolved).

Note: "Season 2" in this context just refers to our SAR Tonight animated series, so there's no changes to the new Early Access Season 0 of the Animal Pass that we released 2 weeks ago. The Early Access Season of the Animal Pass will continue until the end of Early Access, which is tentatively scheduled for Spring 2021!

Update Highlights

[h3]Map Update[/h3]
  • A major new point of interest has been added to Super Animal Island! Visit the Super Animal Super Stage just north of the Welcome Center, next to Giant Eagle Landing.
  • Just like all points of interest in SAR, the theater holds secrets about Super Animal World's past, and the building is surrounded by gardens, a construction site, and a courtyard with water fountains.
  • West S.A.W. Villas have been removed to make way for the new building and complete the highway. We plan to overhaul the villas in the future to better connect them to SAR's backstory as they're one of the oldest points of interest in the game.

[h3]Menu Updates[/h3]
  • New design for mode selection added to help make active game modes more clear as we continue to add more, and provide descriptions of each mode.
  • The news box now supports dynamic news and multiple pieces of news. As of the update, you can use it to open the patch notes and watch the new episode of SAR Tonight!
  • The Howloween event has concluded and has been removed from the main menu. You can look forward to CRISPRmas starting in 2 weeks!
  • Exclamation marks on the Milestones screen will now only show if you can claim an item. This fixes the issue for users being unable to clear exclamation marks for locked milestones.
  • Fixed Animal Pass level on main menu displaying wrong number (off by one).

[h3]Cosmetic Changes[/h3]
  • Pinwheel melee weapon now animates.
  • The hockey mask and Howl mask now display over top of hats.
  • Adjusted some animals' glasses/masks position (rat, capybara, hippo).
  • Fixed the Desert Goggles on penguins.
  • Fix for floss animation glitch with the S.A.W. Uniform.
  • Fixed Graduate Hat icon.

[h3]Game Updates[/h3]
  • Added some more night lighting to the map: Welcome Center flag poles, Super Milk Bar sign, and the Lab To Table sign. The new Super Animal Super Stage also has lights for its popcorn machine and stage.
  • Adjusted many of the weapon reload sounds to better match the actual reload time.
  • Fixed bug with Skunk Vial where player speed was incorrect.
  • Expanded server-side hit registry rollback, to hopefully fix shots not being registered.
  • High ping mode now activates if the last 3 pings were above the threshold (rather than on individual spikes). Also adjusted the duration to 10s rather than 15s. Note: these changes mostly affect players whose temporary ping spike would push them into high ping mode.
  • Increased collision height on tall concrete walls (affects throwables).

Super Fanart Contest + Game Mode Rotations (32v32, Squads & Duos)



Hey Super Animals, thanks for making the release of the Super Major Update last week such a success! The game is hitting record player numbers and it has been a ton of fun playing with all of you and hearing all your first impressions and feedback. We can’t wait to keep building upon this new foundation, and have a packed schedule of new content to bring you before the year is over!

We have another update coming for the game next Thursday alongside the season premiere of Super Animal Royale Tonight, but before that we have two pieces of news for you:
  1. We’re holding a second Super Fanart Contest, with the prompt "All I want for CRISPRmas is you."
  2. For the second week of the S.A.W. vs Rebellion (32v32) limited-time mode, we’re going to re-enable Squads for the NA and AS regions in exchange for disabling Duos for the next week until the 32v32 mode goes away! Duos will remain enabled on the EU server (with Squads still disabled until next Thursday).

[h2]Game Mode Rotations[/h2]



We're now 1 week into our S.A.W. vs Rebellion (32v32) limited-time mode, and have one week left to go! The new mode will be available until our next update on Thursday, December 3rd at which point we'll be back to our regular roster of Solos, Duos and Squads modes.

To make the second week of the limited-time mode a bit more flexible for all you Squads fans, we're going to rotate Squads back in and Duos out temporarily for the NA and AS servers. Any Duos diehards will still be able to play it this week on the EU server, which will remain the same as now with Solos/Duos/32v32, and then next week when the new update arrives on Thursday the limited-time mode will rotate out and all 3 regular modes will be active again!

We also debuted high ping mode in the previous update which kicks in at 200+ ping currently, but since more players might be playing on the EU server from outside the EU during this period we'll be raising it to 250+ ping temporarily.

For background on the decision to keep active modes to 3 for now: each mode supports up to 64 players, each new match lobby starts the game within 140s or less, and we have 3 regional servers, so each additional active mode takes a lot of players to fill. The game has been growing rapidly thanks to all of you, so we might be able to have 4 permanently in the rotation in the future, but for now we'll be testing our new modes as limited-time modes that temporarily replace classic modes.

The mode rotations weren't as clear as they could have been this time, so we'll be debuting a new mode selection UI in the next update that makes limited-time mode schedules clearer in the future. We're also continuing to experiment with new limited-time modes, so keep giving us all your feedback on what you want to see next (including if you want more 32v32 or variants of the mode)!
