A New Way to Test Features

Greetings, brave capsuleers!

As a part of our ongoing efforts to lay the foundations for EVE Online’s third decade and continually improve the world’s largest living work of science-fiction, we’re happy to introduce the Feature Preview system – allowing players to opt-in and engage with complex features still undergoing active development, test driving them directly in the EVE client.

Our aim is to more fully incorporate feedback into our prototypical process by allowing you access to these features early while we design them. Your invaluable feedback on past features has already allowed us to improve and shape them into better additions to EVE – and this new way of testing will allow far more exposed development, enabling earlier chances for players to express important feedback while also allowing our team to gather information on how you play EVE and what will best aid you in that pursuit.

The preview system is available on Singularity and comes to Tranquility in April. The debut preview feature will be a UI unification project, aimed at improving consistency, creating a better onboarding experience for new players, and reducing cognitive load for all players. The features offered in the preview system are temporary and can be easily turned on and off. Your participation is optional, and it is important to note that the features you will be given access to will not be in their final form. We look forward to learning from what you, the players, think as we introduce new features and build the future of EVE Online hand-in-hand.
READY THE PHOTONS
Over EVE Online’s long development history, the user interface has seen many iterations. New feature additions often came with their own specific updates to the UI – and some of these, being a product of their time, have led to some inconsistencies in the overall interface experience.

As the debut feature of the ‘Feature Preview’ system, the Photon UI project aims to create a unified style for EVE Online’s user interface. While not drastically different from what you may be used to, consistency is the driving force behind these new designs. We are focusing on quality-of-life updates like improved interaction feedback, unified functionality, and an updated sci-fi look.

The first round of changes is now available on Singularity and comes to Tranquility in April, bringing adjustments to the window style, margin and spacing updates to reduce cognitive load, and a unification of our UI color schemes used for feedback purposes - blue for call-to-action buttons, orange for warning interactions, and so forth. The second update later this year will see the addition of new effects such as glowing elements, new interaction sounds, and animations.
HOW TO PARTICIPATE
The Feature Preview system, can be accessed via the Settings Menu (by pressing ‘Esc’), under the ‘Feature Previews’ tab. Any features available for preview will be listed on the left and can be opted into by selecting them and clicking the ‘Enable’ button. Enabling (or disabling) these features will often require a restart of the client, after which the selected features will be part of your EVE Online experience. Some of the features that will be available via this new system may be fairly complex and in active development, which could lead to some strange and unintended side effects as we iron out the kinks and buff out the dents. This is an important part of the process, which is why we are inviting you to experience it with us.

These features may go through many stages of development and are not intended for immediate launch. It may be possible at times that you are only seeing a piece of a larger feature, or a concept intended to finetune a trajectory. If you prefer to return to your regular, familiar feature set, you can easily disable any of the opt-in preview features from the ‘Feature Previews’ menu. We will measure the quality and reception of preview features by measuring usage, gauging satisfaction with surveys and interviews, and playtesting. Your feedback through these channels will be important, and we want to ensure that only after ample iteration and proof of positive impact will these features be made a part of the overall EVE experience.

Many different hands have played a part in building the vast world of New Eden. The synthesis of these perspectives has provided a strong backbone for EVE’s development over the years – and we aim to carry this strength into the future by incorporating the hands of you, our players, as well.

We invite you to share any and all feedback on these features – whether you love them, hate them, or just have some thoughts on how we can improve them. For now, you can join the player discussion in this blog’s official discussion thread on the EVE forums, but know that we are activating new lines of communication as well. If you have enabled a feature in the ‘Feature Preview’ system, you may receive an email from us containing a small survey.

We’d like to express our immense appreciation for any of you who take the time to participate and provide feedback for game features, look forward to being joined by our one-of-a-kind players on this journey of discovery, and are excited to bring you open access to EVE’s development process through the Preview System. Together, we’ll continue to improve the world’s largest living work of science-fiction and make EVE Online the best MMO out there.

Thank you, and fly safe!

EVE Fanfest 2022: New details confirmed!

Hard partying Capsuleers,

There are now just 48 days until EVE Fanfest kicks off in Iceland! Fanfest represents the ultimate coming together of the EVE community – a chance to celebrate our achievements, party hard, take in presentations from developers and expert players, contribute to roundtables, join some tournament play, and a whole lot more. Make sure to get your ticket!

After four years without an in-person Fanfest, this year more than ever it is also a chance to connect with your fellow Capsuleers, and even catch-up in-person with fellow pilots you’ve only seen online in recent years. There really is no other gaming community event like Fanfest - because there really is no other gaming community like EVE’s.

The infamous Fanfest Party at the Top of the World will return along with the traditional Reykjavík pub crawl, and a host of unofficial social gatherings (not included in the ticket price) between 2-8 May. There will also be a charity dinner, as well as a silent auction and many more exciting events.
Presentations
As well as the always-exciting EVE keynote, there will be presentations spotlighting the best of EVE art, the role of audio in New Eden, the tech that makes everything possible, and the value of data in EVE’s economy. There will also be EVE Academy sessions on how new players can be welcomed, a presentation from Ian Chisholm, director of Clear Skies, a history of EVE cinematic trailers from CCP’s talented cinematic team, and much more.

And as previously announced, famed science and gaming YouTuber Scott Manley will be giving a presentation. Scott made the news when paying 1 million PLEX for a Gold Magnate in an auction. The PLEX was then in turn donated to PLEX for GOOD by the Gold Magnate's former owner Kelon Darklight in an incredible display of space-philanthropy. Hearing Scott speak in-person is bound to be interesting!
CCP’s CCP Games Games
The bewilderingly popular and always absurd ‘CCP's CCP Games Games’ will return with new challenges, new competitors and the same old same messiness, wanton destruction and poor life choices that the audience loved in 2018. It’s even rumoured that some capable competitors are set to join the show. What will actually happen on the day is anyone’s guess!
Charity Dinner and Able Gamers
This year the Fanfest Charity Dinner will be benefitting the amazing Able Gamers. The strictly limited tickets for this event grant you access to an unforgettable evening of drinks and food with EVE developers and CCP Games’s CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson at CCP Gróska HQ. Rather than go for a traditional seated set-up with table service, the meal will take a more relaxed form that lets you mingle and socialise with the EVE team.
Invasion World Tour Grand Finals
Fanfest will host the Invasion World Tour Grand Finals, ensuring dazzling competition for pilots and spectators alike! The event brings together the winners from PvP tournaments from the previous Invasion World Tour stops. On 6 May, eight teams will compete live in a single elimination, 2v2 tournament. The following day the tournament will culminate with a best-of-three grand final taking place on from the main stage of Fanfest and live on CCPTV.
In Iceland early?
If you arrive in Iceland early, you can join the free pre-Fanfest Mixers that run through 2-to-5 May. The mixers will concentrate on a few bars in a certain area that changes every day. Keep an eye out for more details.
Additional Fanfest events!
There are a wealth of other events taking place across Fanfest. You can test your EVE knowledge in the EVE Pub Quiz, or take in an exclusive preview of Down the Rabbit Hole: An EVE Online documentary. After the screening you can join a Q&A with the director, Fredrik Knudsen.

Clear Skies director Ian Chrisholm will also be present at Fanfest, showing us exclusive previews and WIP material from the upcoming Clear Skies 4 during the Clear Skies marathon at Bíó Paradís - along with providing a Q&A after the screening.

Tickets for some of the Icelandic tours and trips are still available, letting you experience a country like no other. There will be a Fanfest Reykjavik City Tour, EVE Monument Walking Tour, the Sisters of EVE tour for your friends and family, and the infamous Pub Crawl. Check the Fanfest Eventbrite tickets page.

On the Thursday you get a chance to join the ultimate flying experience with EVE Online Developers and players at FlyOver Iceland. See all of Iceland through state-of-the-art technology that gives the feeling of flying.

On the Sunday, there will be a chance to recover from any hard partying through a film screening at Bíó Paradís, and the Fanfest Walking Coffee tour.
Safety and the pandemic
While Iceland is safe to visit, lessons from the pandemic and the wellbeing and safety of all visitors and staff are our top priority, and we continue to work closely with local health authorities to ensure your trip will be one where your welfare comes first.
Early registration
You can register and pick up your badge and Fanfest swag bag at Gróska on 4 and 5 May between 12:00 and 18:00 local time.
Fleet up!
Fanfest takes place from 6 May to 7 May at the amazing Laugardalshöll Arena in Reykjavik. Tickets are still available, but as this is the first Fanfest in so long, they are selling out fast. Remember to book your travel as early as possible. Don’t miss out on Fanfest’s return – the community will be sharing stories about this one for years to come!

Glorious Battleships & Bolstered Bulkheads now live!

GLORIOUS BATTLESHIPS

The changes to the beloved battleships of EVE are now live in-game, improving their mobility and survivability on the battlefield. A new role bonus has been added to all empire, faction, marauder, and black ops battleships (apart from the Praxis) which increases the effectiveness of armor plates by 50%, and bumps shield extenders by 100%. In addition, a +5% additive bonus to the hull hitpoint bonus from reinforced bulkheads has been incorporated to strengthen a battleship’s ability to hull tank. Lastly, large micro jump drive fitting requirements have also been reduced substantially.

Speaking of battleships, many scintillating SKINs for this class of vessel will be on sale between 8-16 March in EVE Online’s New Eden Store, including examples from the Eden’s Hunters, Ghost’s Hex, Vampire’s Hex, and Steel Cardinal SKIN lines to name but a few. Gotta stay sharp to look sharp!

A week from the update, battleships have been the official cause of death for 2.6 million NPCs, and they have fired over 8.6 million shots in PvP fights in the same time period!

BOLSTERED BULKHEADS

In an update to the changes introduced with Surgical Strike in 2020, resistance modules which had their resistances lowered by that update have now had half the resistances they lost returned. This has been done so that Capsuleers can enjoy the best of both worlds, worlds where force auxiliaries will still be vulnerable and combat can still be longer and more tactical. The benefits will be felt far and wide, by wormholers, Lowsec pilots, and small-medium gangs (and solo fighters) generally.
