Resident Evil 2 is better than RE2 Remake, and now easy to play on PC

We're still waiting for confirmation on what's next for Resident Evil, be it a fully fledged RE9, a Code Veronica remake, or maybe a fresh version of the hard-to-love Resident Evil Zero. Nevertheless, the Capcom survival horror is ticking over thanks to a vital re-release of one of the greatest games in the entire series, Resident Evil 2. RE2 Remake is a superlative reimagining of the fixed-camera classic, but the 1998 original is scarier, more atmospheric, and a vital part of videogame history. It also brought us Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield for the first time, as well as the iconic Raccoon City police station. Hard to access on PC in the modern era, finally, as of today, buying and playing RE2 is extremely simple.

If you've been itching to play the original 90s version of the game that kicked off the Resident Evil series by introducing us all to just how funny it can be to have a live-action intro that's so stuck in that decade it might as well be listening to Aqua's Barbie Girl while playing pick-up ball with prime Michael Jordan, you're in luck.

The PC port of original Resi from 1996, long something that that's been tough to get ahold of in a format that allows you to easily play it on a modern PC, with it not being on Steam. Now though, it's been brought back, by Capcom and a storefront that specialises in, well, good old games.

You can find this original PC version of Resident Evil on GOG.com as of today, with it being available for £8.99 / $9.99. While it has been updated to to ensure it works properly with the Windows 10 and 11 that a lot of today's PCs use, unless you're a clever clogs that prefers something like Linux, the tweaks that GOG's made are designed to be pretty light - i.e you're not getting a remake that switches up the original experience too much.

One modder is bringing back Resident Evil 2's classic style by adding over 1,700 camera angles to the Remake

I first played Resident Evil 2 on my cousin's PlayStation when I was way too young to be doing so—10-year-old me had no business walking around Racoon City at that age. Back then, the grainy images and bloody zombies felt like they would jump out of the screen at me, and the lack of directional control, thanks to the fixed camera angles, was too much for my tiny brain to handle...
