Six years after launch, Resident Evil 2 Remake just became harder than ever

You're down to your last few VP70 bullets. The Licker on the ceiling of the STARs corridor is scuttling rapidly towards you. Somewhere in the distance, you hear the increasingly loud bootsteps of the tyrannical Mr. X. Originally released in 2019, Resident Evil 2 Remake, particularly on the higher difficulty settings, can be one of the toughest survival horror games on PC. But with RE9 presumably in the works and the possibility of a Code Veronica remake lingering in the air, Capcom's reimagined version of RE2 has just been transformed into one of the hardest PC games, period.

The original, canceled version of Resident Evil 2 is back and better than ever

Gothic, ornate, but just close enough to normality that it feels real, the Raccoon City Police Department building in Resident Evil 2 is one of the greatest settings in horror game history. But it didn't always look that way. Before RE2 made it to shelves back in 1998, another version of the game came close to completion. Starring a different-looking Leon Kennedy and a Claire Redfield prototype named Elza Walker, what fans now refer to as Resident Evil 1.5 was a very, very different game, with alternate locations, more guns, and expanded escort-quest sequences. Capcom scrapped this version, but it's since been rebuilt by fans - and a new, improved restoration is available right now.

Resident Evil 2 just got an unofficial HD remaster, and you can play it now

I've completed Resident Evil 2 probaby 100 times, and that's not an exaggeration. Some years ago, I used to speedrun it, which meant playing the entire Leon A scenario back to back maybe twice or three times a day. From the Raccoon City streets to the RPD building, the narrow sewers and the Umbrella lab, I feel like I know every inch of Capcom's classic survival horror game by heart. I like RE2 Remake, but the original will always be the best. With that in mind, and rumors whirling about both Resident Evil 9 and a possible remake of Code Veronica, if you want to revisit Resident Evil 2 now it's on GOG, a new, unofficial HD remaster mod is perfect for bringing layers of extra detail to one of the all-time greats.
