Devlog #3 - Life in an Oasis

Life cannot survive on scorched land, making the oases the only temporary safe havens on Earth. Or so it would seem.

As the first rays of sunlight fall onto a silent oasis, the frost begins to melt. Soon after, life begins to stir. Small animals come sniffing, then bigger ones follow, like the savage rupu. Finally, the nomads appear atop their walkers.

Lone nomads arrive first. They travel the global circuit on their walkers, searching for pristine lands with plenty of resources. They move quickly, hoping to score some treasure before larger clans come to lay their claim. Some nomadic groups will settle for longer periods of time, building bases from which to stage raids and hunt the local wildlife.

While there will always be those who insist on travelling alone, the majority of nomads travel in groups. Nomads who stay together can more easily stand up to the threats of rival clans that seek to monopolize resources and trade routes.

The group that reigns over an oasis receives income as a result of all the harvesting and trading that occurs in their territories. So when a clan claims a resource-rich oasis, they will experience a surge of new growth. As a clan grows, new and more ambitious opportunities present themselves that require cooperation and planning. Establishing complex trade routes, protecting an oasis’ borders, providing mercenary services for other nomads, building large war walkers, reshaping the economy – all these objectives require a collective and coordinated effort amongst the clans’ members.

Before an unoccupied or contested oasis can be captured, a claiming walker must be built and deployed by a clan. There will usually be more than one faction vying for control, and they will attempt to sabotage the claiming walkers belonging to rival clans. The last claiming walker left standing in an oasis during a contested period means victory. The Flotilla guarantees the claim for twenty-four hours, after which the oasis becomes contested and susceptible to attack once again.

After some time, the unforgiving sun burns the oasis to the ground and the cycle begins anew.
