Conqueror’s Got Talent: Winners

We received a strong line-up of entries for our Music Week contest last month, from sombre string-led instrumentals to berzerker rap tracks. So good were they all, in fact, that not a single composition received the dreaded “null points” from our panel of international judges!

1st: In joint first place was Guardazaparayos’ intoxicating ‘Jotunheim’, a track in which you can almost hear the Sons of Fenrir stalking the early morning mists to scout out the enemy positions.

1st: Equally revered was ‘Bravoure des dieux’ by FreemanPC which opens with the storms of war echoing through distant mountains. We like to imagine a flotilla of longships making for the open sea, as they plan their next raid on the English coast.

2nd: A little more contemporary, SpookyPL’s urban rap maintains a thoroughly medieval feel thanks to the use of some hurdy-gurdy type instrument droning away in amongst those phat beats.

3rd: Separating second from third by a single point is Atronio’s ‘Vikings Battle’, which, despite featuring very little percussion, has a real urgency that builds toward a fitting crescendo.

4th: Rafador’s entry is played beautifully on guitar, evocative of the kind of tune a soldier might play by the fireside before battle, as they contemplate the family and friends they left behind.

5th: Avatar’s entry gains a chart position for its excellent production values. Had it been written specifically for the contest it would have placed higher, but it’s expertly crafted nonetheless.

Well done to all the winners who will all be receiving enough Sovereigns to complete the Attire Challenges and attain the mystical Seidr Druid Hero Attire and Mount Set, as well as an extra bonus Skogrseidr Unit Attire!

On This Day: Lindisfarne Viking Raid, AD 793

On this very day 1,228 years ago, the age of the Vikings began. What marked the occasion was a particularly brutal attack on the monastery at Lindisfarne in the kingdom of Northumbria in England. For the Vikings it was just another day at the office, looting, burning, and killing, but the raid on June 8, AD 793 was the first time that a Christan sanctuary had been defiled by Norse pagans. It wouldn’t be the last time either, given the riches that many held and how poorly they were defended.

Since the expected level of divine intervention was minimal, shocked Christian leaders across England took to apportioning part of the blame for the attack on local people, whose apparent sinfulness gave their God an excuse to hold back his retribution - and no doubt the church to restore its riches through taxation. All this was of course lost on the Vikings, who at Lindisfarne had simply hit the jackpot and thereafter continued to target isolated religious settlements (such as at Jarrow and Iona) on account of them being low risk and high reward.

After Lindisfarne, the age of the Vikings continued to be dominated by hit-and-run raids along the coastal areas of Western Europe until the middle of the 9th Century, when the Scandinavians became the era’s greatest conquering armies, securing lands across much of England and Europe, as well posing a persistent threat to many great cities such as Paris.

The end of the Viking Age is aligned with the adoption of Christianity across Scandinavia and is marked in England with the failed invasion by King Harald III in AD 1066, who was defeated by the Saxon King Harold at the Battle of Stamford Bridge. It was a victory that led indirectly to Harold’s death at the Battle of Hastings less than a month later in the wake of the Norman Invasion. That event was to change England forever, and mark the start of the Medieval era.

As a footnote, it should not be overlooked that when the Duchy of Normandy was established, it was handed to a Norse warlord, in return for which the ex-king Rollo pledged vassalage to France. In that sense, the Norman conquest of England a hundred years later was as much a Norse victory as it was a French one, since William the Conqueror was undoubtedly of Viking descent. In effect, the Viking warlords that held sway over much of northern England during the so-called Dark Ages, were simply replaced by a more cultivated Christian variant when the Normans united the land in their wake.

Create a new Siege Battle loading screen for Conqueror’s Blade

Update: The deadline for the loading screen art contest has been extended to June 27th, 23:59 CEST!

Having proved yourself in this creative arena before, we thought we’d ask you to once again steel yourselves to create a new batch of loading screens, this time to help us celebrate the second anniversary of Conqueror’s Blade.

Whether you decide to create original art from scratch, or develop an idea based on in-game screenshots, what we’re looking for are images that capture the scale and intensity of the game’s Siege battles, so that players may allow themselves to feel an extra surge of excitement as the next map loads into memory.

We’re hoping to receive three winning entries that have the potential to be as iconic as any that have graced any game. If Booming Tech are as enthused as they were by last year’s entries, then they will be added to the game to be displayed ahead of the appropriate Siege Battles - with 2,300 Sovereigns also going to each winner.

Rules of entry
  • Entries should be submitted via the Loading Screen Contest Discord channel. Please include your character name and server alongside your submission. (We may ask for further evidence to prove that your entry was created by you.)
  • Entries must be received before June 27th, 2021 at 23:59 CEST (14:59 PDT).
  • Only .jpg and .png image file formats will be accepted. They must be at least 1920x1080 resolution.
  • There should be no blood, skeletons, or dead bodies depicted in entries.
  • There should be no signature added to the artwork - these can obstruct game elements and will be added by our team when necessary.
  • Entries cannot contain any material that violates the MY.GAMES Terms of Service.
  • Your entry cannot feature any copyrighted or third-party material. Only entries featuring original artwork inspired by Conqueror’s Blade will be considered.
  • The best entries will be determined by Booming Tech and the Conqueror’s Blade team and winners will be announced on the Conqueror’s Blade website after the contest has ended.
  • Winning entries will only be added to the game at the discretion of Booming Tech, assuming entries fully adhere to quality standards.
  • You agree that your entry can be used by Booming Tech, My.com and MY.GAMES for promotional purposes (for example, for publication on our official social channels or websites) for all versions of Conqueror’s Blade across all territories in perpetuity.
  • Entrants found to violate the Terms of Service or break competition rules are subject to disqualification up to and beyond the conclusion of the competition.

Good luck!
