What’s Coming to Steel Division 2

Hello commanders,

We have come to the final DevBlog before the Eugen team retires for the summer. Don’t worry, we’ll be back by the first week of September!

Not wanting to leave you empty-handed, in today’s post, we’ll give you a heads-up on the upcoming changes heading towards Steel Division 2. These will come together with the future release of the next major expansion, Steel Division 2: Men of Steel.

Keep reading to find out more!
New Units and Unit Traits
Regardless of if you get Steel Division 2: Men of Steel or not, we will implement the new Traits with existing Steel Division 2 units. There are too many to list, but you can consider it a major overhaul of the game’s entire infantry class. In case of doubt, best to check your regular infantry forces after Steel Division 2: Men of Steel has hit.

Here is a general rundown of what you can expect in terms of Traits:

  • COMMANDO. ”Real” special forces (RANGERS, OSNAZ, BRANDENBURGER, OSS, COMMANDO D’AFRIQUE, etc.) will receive the new Commando trait. Mountain or light troops get the existing Raider trait. Making this change presented a bit of an issue as we characterized the latter as “Commando squads.” The solution was to introduce a new “Light infantry squad” and apply it to mountain and light infantry instead, making a new distinction in type.
  • ARTILLERY LEADER. This trait has been given to all existing artillery leader units. No surprises here.
  • TANK RIDER. This new trait is a bit more restrained. The list is not “too” long. All Soviet (and Eastern allies) TANKO. squads (these include regular troops and leaders) will receive the new Tank Rider trait. Likewise, all German Axis BEGLEIT. squads. A new Allied unit, the Canadian KANGAROO RIFLES. is also the recipient of this trait. Note that the Tank Rider trait is useless if not matched by an armored unit (say, tank or assault gun) featuring the exact same trait. This means that Germans will be restricted to STUG III and IV and the Western Allies to the KANGAROO APC. The Soviets have it easier; all manners of Soviet tanks, from light to heavy, will feature the Tank Rider trait.
    • A side note: the Fs-Panzerdivision “Hermann Göring” had special HG BEGLEIT- troops which were actually wrongly named, as they had no StuG to ride on! As a result, they were all renamed HG STURM- and aren’t not affected by the above Tank Rider trait.
  • SECURITY. This trait will mostly affect Axis troops, but rear-area “police” or second-line forces from other nations will also receive it. The German SCHUPO, SCHUMA, SICHERUNGS, and HIFLSPOLIZEI will get the Security trait, as well as Soviet SMERSH and NKVD. The fascist Italian RSI sees the GNR (standard troops and leaders) receiving this trait. A sprinkling of Allied units will also get it, including the U.S CONV. GUNNERS (from Task Force 45 as they had to prevent Axis infiltration attempts) and CONVERTED RAF (whose job was to secure airfields).
Red Devils New Look
With the British airborne forces making a reappearance in both the 1st Special Services Brigade (from Combat Phase C onwards) and the 1st Airborne Task Force, we used the opportunity to revamp their look. Some of these changes will also make their way to the 6th Airborne Division.

  • The AB PARAS’ weapon load-out has been reworked to match their latest
Table of Operations & Equipment as it was historically. This means one fewer Sten SMG but adding one scoped Lee Enfield (T) per squad. They lose the Gamon Bomb in the process.
  • The above change only affects the standard variant, not the AB PARAS (PIAT) or the AB CAN. PARAS.

  • Continuing, we split two cards of the M1A1 PACK 75mm howitzer into two different versions. One remains in the ART category with indirect HE fire, smoke, and radio control; the second one is moved to the SUPP category, where it is cheaper to deploy but only fires HE and HEAT rounds.
  • The 6th Airborne Division was missing AB ART. COMMANDERS and AB SPOTTERS in the ART tab. We have rectified this omission.
  • This was already mentioned with the 1st Special Service Brigade, but the RM CENTAUR IV was revised to be an indirect fire self-propelled gun (with Radio trait) and moved from the SUPP to the ART tab. Since the ones featured in the 6th Airborne Division were the same units in real-life, we applied the same update to this battlegroup.
Justice for Finland
Following Fulmen’s relentless lobbying for more justice for his fellow Finns, we’ve corrected some generic mistakes regarding that nation.

  • KIVÄÄRI, SEXTIETTAN, and RANGAISTUS “rifle” squads will all receive the prescribed minimum of 3x SUOMI, as per their TO&E, but at the expense of rifles in their current load-out.
  • Just like the RM CENTAUR IV being updated as an indirect fire SPG, so too is the BT-42. Although this unit will remain in the SUPP tab, as a fire support vehicle, it was given the option for indirect HE fire (but lacking Radio). This will affect both the 17. Divisioona and the Panssaridivisioona.
  • Finland was unfairly missing a heavy supply tractor. To solve this issue, it receives the RSO. This unit will be found in the expansion’s new 17. Divisioona, but also the Panssaridivisioona.
Some HMG love
On to some ratatatata machine guns.

  • We found that 12,7mm & 13mm AA machine guns, especially multibarrel ones, were underperforming. We’ve improved their performance, making a quad 12,7mm roughly equivalent to the existing triple 15mm AA.
  • Single and double 12,7mm and 13mm AA machine guns were also improved.
  • British Besa 15mm were also underperforming, though in ground combat this time. We upped its performance to make it a (slightly) lesser version of a 20mm.
Hail Canada
Let’s spotlight some changes coming to Allied Canada.

  • With the new Tank Riders trait and Canada being the sole Western Allied owner of a relevant APC, we made some changes to the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division.
  • As mentioned previously, a new squad has been created, which is the very large KANGAROO RIFLES, brimming with small arms.
  • As a consequence, the KANGAROO was removed as a transport option for all infantry that had access to it. It is now restricted to the sole KANGAROO RIFLES, which will be available from Combat Phase B.

  • Another new Canadian unit has been added to the game: the missing SHERMAN IB (which is a Sherman 105) from the 1st Canadian Armoured Brigade supporting the 8th (Indian) Infantry Division. This new vehicle was added to this division with the brigade’s camouflage job and markings.

'Men of Steel' Progress

Hello commanders,

How are you doing? Today’s DevBlog, we’ll give you a brief progress report on the next expansion, Steel Division 2: Men of Steel. We are entering the last stretch, and though we don’t have a release date yet, we’re getting mighty close!

First up, the Steel Division 2: Men of Steel Steam page is live!
Status Update
Steel Division 2: Men of Steel is nearly ready from a developmental point of view. The team has put the finishing touches on models, reskins, and unit portraits, finalized the integration of dialogue, and completed much more work under the hood.

There are still a couple of things to be finished:

  • Balancing. The final balancing phase has begun. The ever-valuable Strike Team has the new expansion in their expert hands. The green light to stream it at their heart’s content has been given.
  • Localizations. We are completing all the expansion’s translations as we speak.
  • Release Date. We are working with Valve to find a good launch date for the expansion. When we’ll have one, you’ll be the first to know!

Some other cool elements have recently been completed. The key art for Steel Division 2: Men of Steel has been finalized. Check it out!
A couple more skins and unit details
As we described in various DevBlogs and much exhaustive details, Steel Division 2: Men of Steel will bring a host of new units and impressive skins. Below is a small list of those that deserve another chance in the spotlights.

  • RM SHERMAN II: The Royal Marines tanks landed with the RM CENTAUR batteries. Just like the latter units, they sport visual artillery radial markings all around the turret for the tank commanders to quickly direct the tank’s fire. In-game, they will be regular but experienced M4A1 available from Combat Phase A with the 1st Special Service Brigade.

  • F6F-5 HELLCAT. These are U.S. Navy planes, the same that turned the tide in the air battle over the Pacific (before being replaced by the Vaught F4U Corsairs). In Europe, they took part in Operation Dragoon, flying from the USS Tulagi and USS Kansaan Bay carriers. This aircraft is from the former’s air wing and, if not mistaken, the first U.S. Navy unit to make it in a Steel Division game. In-game, they will provide air cover to the 1st Airborne Task Force.

  • PANZER P40 37(i). Under the Beute designation hides the very first serviceable Italian P26/40 “heavy” tanks. Commandeered by the Germans after the takeover in Italy, they were sent to bolster the Axis troops hurriedly moved to face the Anzio landings. In-game, they will be part of the 715. Infanterie-Division.

  • P-61A-5 BLACK WIDOW. We already showed you that the fighter-bomber variant, the P-61B-10, provides close air support to our Allied Groupement Dody. However, the variant featured with the 1st Special Service Brigade will be the earlier (night) fighter version, without any bombs, but with its own special livery.

  • Bf 109G-14. The latest version of the German 109s in the summer of 1944 will be flown by the Hungarian air force. However, it will also be available in its Luftwaffe variant. This particular plane sports the markings and colors of the III./JG 11, flying top cover in-game for the Kampfgruppe von Tettau over Arnhem.

Men of Steel Acknowledgments

Hello commander,

In today’s DevBlog, we’ll put our ears to the ground to get the latest on the new dialogue coming with Steel Division 2: Men of Steel.

We are smack dab in the middle of recording for our new expansion, meaning that some nations are already done while others are still busy belting out lines in the studio.

So, what’s in store?
A little bit of talk
As you might remember, one reason we encountered delays on previous expansions and DLCs was the troublesome translation and recording of dialogues (the acknowledgment lines heard in-game when selecting a unit). With our aim for authenticity and immersion, having the dialogue in a new nation’s language can be challenging, especially when the pool of translators and voice actors is smaller.

To avoid this, with Bulgaria being a new minor nation in Steel Division 2: Men of Steel, we put the recording of the new dialogue at the front of our production pipeline. The task was launched as soon as possible, but it still took time to translate and proofread. Regardless, recordings have been done (yah!), and the voice-overs are being integrated as we speak.
What can you expect?
We have quite a few nations, including new ones, that will appear in Steel Division 2: Men of Steel. Let’s go over each interesting language.

Bulgaria
One of the expansion’s big newcomers is Bulgaria. Right now, several voice actors had their turn and recorded their dialogue for the expansion, including almost all the new units.

Bulgarian Infantry 1 Bulgarian Infantry 2

U.S. and Canadian
We are recording some new lines for U.S. and Canadian special forces, specifically those of the infamous Devil’s Brigade of the 1st Airborne Task Force division. The American dialogue will also be “retrofitted” to the existing U.S. Rangers already in-game (found with the U.S. 2nd Infantry “Indianhead” division).

Canadian special forces US special forces

French-Morrocan
The 4e Division Marocaine de Montagne can be found as one of the many historical formations of the Groupement Dody battlegroup. Although focused on mountain warfare, this historical formation consisted of the usual Tirailleurs regiments. This means that about thirty percent of the manpower was actually French, not Moroccan.

Most of the time, these Frenchmen were born in the colonies and called “Pied Noirs” or “Black Feet” in North Africa. Why is this important? Orders in these regiments were usually given in French, as in any other French Army unit. Therefore, our new Montagnards will speak French but with a heavy Morrocan accent.

Montagnard

The Gourmiers series of units will be different. These fearsome warriors were originally formed as auxiliaries in the French colonies and used more as police troops than anything else. They officially didn’t enlist in the French Army but were “recruited” with a specific officer in charge, much like a mercenary band of old. Therefore, only the best French officers were posted to Goumier outfits; they had to know the men’s habits and customs, speak Arab (even in local dialects), and be especially charismatic and brave. More a warband than an official unit, orders were given and received in Arabic. As such, within Steel Division: Men of Steel, our Goumiers units will say their acknowledgments in Arabic only.

Gourmier

Dutch
The Dutch will be present for both sides in Steel Division 2: Men of Steel. Although they are not featured under their own flag in the Armory, several new Dutch units can be found in the expansion. These include:

For the Axis as the second-rate SS-Landstorm as part of Kampfgruppe von Tettau. These were local Dutch collaborators serving the Germans. Distributed across the Netherlands, during Operation Market Garden, they were one of the first to go into battle against the British paratroopers. These rear-area troops were equipped with (mostly) scavenged British weapons, either those left behind after Dunkirk in 1940, intercepted airdrops for the Dutch resistance, or during the Battle for Arnhem itself.

Dutch collaborator 1

Another collaborationist Dutch Axis unit is the SS-Wache. These are pretty nefarious troopers, being concentration camp guards retreating from the Allied advance. Regrouped into combat units, most of them lacked any serious training. Mostly criminals, these particular soldiers were noted for their looting and violence against civilians. Used against the British paratroopers, the SS-Wache suffered heavy casualties and stopped being a cohesive fighting unit when the second wave of Allied airborne troops dropped right on top of them. To be authentic, only some of the SS-Wache will speak Dutch; others will speak Russians. Almost half of these guards were actually Soviet POWs, now pressed to serve the German Reich.

Dutch collaborator 2

Not all Dutchmen were chummy with Axis, far from it. Some Dutch fighter pilots are on the Allied side, found with our new British 1st Special Service Brigade. Aside from the ground troops, including the Prinses Irene infantry brigade, the Dutch entirely crewed two RAF fighter squadrons. These include the No. 320 and No. 322 Squadrons. The latter was among the first to receive the new Spitfire Mk.XIV with Rolls-Royce Griffon engines, bringing them to Normandy. While sporting the Union Jack and classified as a British unit, don’t be surprised to hear some Dutch up in the air.

Dutch fighter pilot

Italian
The Italians are back! We have rerecorded voice lines for the sole new Italian unit in this expansion, the Partigiani found with Groupement Dody. These were Italian Alpine partisans who sought refuge in France after Operation Dragoon, filling the ranks of the FFI. In real life, they were reinforced with Russian and Polish volunteers. More on that below.

Not only the Partigiani will be speaking Italian, though. Another unit, this time French, will also have Italian dialogue: the FFI le.FH 18M, a German artillery unit, was captured by the French but manned by Italian crew. Many of these gun pieces were taken, and the French lacked the expertise to use them, POW camps were toured to see if any volunteers would take up arms, serve for the Allies, including as artillery crews. Many came forward, including the above-mentioned Russian and Polish troops, first drafted by the Germans, captured, and now fighting for the Allies. The same happened with the Italians, who manned the German artillery pieces for the French Army.
Join the Bulgarian Army
Once more, you’ll get the opportunity to leave your (name) mark in Steel Division 2. As a long-running Eugen tradition, we will allow our players and community feature their names on our platoon and tank leader’s list. It is time for Bulgaria to be featured with the Bronirana Brigada. This is how it works:

  • Only family or surnames, not first or given names, are allowed.
  • Only one name per poster.
  • Name must fit the nation (in this case, Bulgarian).
  • Please look at previous names to check if yours hasn’t been suggested already.
  • Don’t comment on other people’s names.
  • All names will be reviewed at the end before we include them in the expansion. Don’t be a silly billy, sneaking in jokes or insults into a language will not work.

To make it crystal clear: all names will be picked randomly from a nation’s list. We CANNOT attribute a name to a specific unit. Follow the link and get your name on the list!
