Ladder season 8: Dimensional Hooking
Dimensional hooking
Throughout the world are scattered cracks in space. You can reach into cracks with a dimensional hook. The longer the hook reach is, the deeper you can reach. Interdimensional space contains things that can be of value but there are also dangers there. You may hook interdimensional beings or planar travelers. The deeper you go, the more dangerous it gets.
Hook reach
Every character has a specific hook reach, as shown in the character sheet. Hook reach determines how deep you can reach into the dimensional crack. The further you reach, the more events are possible. Greater depth offers greater rewards but also greater risks. Whenever you send the hook into a crack, a depth is chosen between 1 and the hook’s reach. Each depth has a specific event that will happen.
Each time you use the hook, there is 100% chance to increase its reach by 1. The chance decreases to 75% when the hook’s reach is 10 or higher. There is no maximum hook reach, nor is there a maximum depth to search. Difficulty and rewards continue to scale with depth indefinitely.
Bounty
Dimensional hooking always yields a gold bounty. In addition, there is a chance to drop bait.
Some events are solely rewarding without challenge. Some items cannot be obtained outside dimensional hooking.
Bait
If you have at least one bait in your inventory when you send the hook into the crack, the top-most bait in your inventory is consumed, adding its effect to the event. Not all effects are relevant to all events. Some bait properties are the same as beacon properties but they add abilities only to monsters that would spawn out of the crack, if any.
You can only carry three pieces of dimensional bait. If a fourth would drop, it’s destroyed instead. It’s advisable to keep up the quality by deleting bad ones so you get the most out of cracks when you find them.
Boss
Dimensional hooking adds another end boss. Winning the ladder entails killing all end bosses, including the new one.
The end boss appears on depth 20. Until you’ve killed the end boss, any depth above 20 is downgraded to 20.
