Colt Canyon News

Colt Canyon is one of GameSpot's "Coolest Games" at PAX West!

We recently showcased Colt Canyon at our booth at PAX West in Seattle with a fresh playable demo. Also the guys at GameSpot came by to take a look at the game - and mentioned it as one of their "37 Coolest Games From PAX West 2019 You Need To See":

"Coming from Retrific, Colt Canyon is best described as a minimalist roguelike Western game. [...] It's certainly an unusual approach to a Western game, but at the same time, that's what makes it so alluring."

"I had a blast fighting through the different stages of the desert wilderness, picking up new guns and reclaiming treasures from bandits. Colt Canyon has got a unique approach to the concept of a Western roguelike, and I'm excited to dive right back in for another run soon."

Developer Shootout #2: Colt Canyon Game Loop

Howdy fellow gunslingers! Great pleasure to welcome you to our next Developer Shootout. Within the next weeks and months, we share tons of news on the steps we take to bring the dangerous Wild West to an atmospheric life! So, let’s speak about the Game Loop of Colt Canyon.

At the beginning of the game you and your partner will be attacked by bandits. You will be shot and left in your own blood; your partner gets kidnapped. When the hero gets on his feet again a bloody path of revenge lies before him: Reach the bandit camp, slaughter them down, free your partner and make your way back. Spaghetti Western style!

Colt Canyon consists of 3 main areas with 3 levels each. You must cross the vast levels from left to right. In every run you can explore the surroundings to find loot like new weapons, ammo or healing items. You will also get the opportunity to help other kidnapped folks that might help you in one way or the other afterwards. Additionally, Colt Canyon provides realistic elements and various ways to advance through the levels: Reloading takes time and you better get prepared for the next battle. Especially in the beginning this is not just run and gun! Stealth elements and an extensive weapon arsenal allow for strategic decision making, various traps and predatory wildlife needs to be avoided and secrets want to be uncovered and explored.

The hero shoots his way through the Wilderness (stage 1), a more inhabited Farming Area with buildings, mines and plantations (stage 2) and a Bandit Camp Area (stage 3) with narrow, hostile canyons and dry, dead nature. After every stage a tough and fast-paced boss fight is waiting for the gunslinger. The further you get the deadlier the canyon becomes.

The stages differ on various buildings, enemies and natural surroundings, shader-based color styles, ambient FX and music.

With your liberated partner on your side you will also have to fight your way back home, from right to left trough all the stages you passed before. With your heavy gear you fight your way through the bandits, who are now looking for bloody retribution. This time there will be more run and run, but also way more well-equipped bandits.

When you die you will have to restart the entire run. You'll need to get familiar with the game, the canyons and weapons in order to successfully rescue your partner. But through various challenges and secrets you will also unlock other heroes and weapons that might help you on later runs.

Developer Shootout #1: Colt Canyon Soundtrack

Howdy fellow gunslingers! Great pleasure to welcome you to our first Developer Shootout on our pixel art rogue-lite shooter Colt Canyon. Within the next weeks and months we will be sharing tons of news on the steps we take to bring the dangerous Wild West to an atmospheric life!

Let's talk about the music: To make the Western experience as realistic as possible and allow the player to immerse into a story full of flying bullets, bloodthirsty enemies and dangerous wildlife you need an atmospheric soundtrack, that is supporting the story and action on the screen - no matter if it's a movie or a game.

Colt Canyon is no exception. The game is designed in a minimalized and pixelized style with color mood and vegetation differing depending on the various regions the players is shooting his way through - and it's the same for the soundtrack.

Composer of the Colt Canyon soundtrack is Luigi-Maria Rapisarda: "Endless deserts, smoking colts, saloons in which the whiskey flows, bandits that wanna chase you down and the burning sun in the sky combined with typical instruments like harmonica, fiddle or an old bar-piano - the Colt Canyon soundtrack is inspired by the works of Ennio Morricone on the great Spaghetti Western movies of the 60s and 70s."

But enough words, let the music do the talking:
