Avatar Playstyle: Reina

Dear Denizens of Issilith!

Just as in real life, Reina is also a bit of a misfit on the battleground. This Specialist Avatar will require you to plan ahead, and occasionally go into a battle frenzy and revel in the pain of your units.

Reina’s signature Skill, Offering, allows you to target a local owned unit and deal 1 damage to it. In return, it will heal your Core for 2. And all of that for just 3 energy. This Skill also has a great synergy with cards that profit from being damaged, such as Hammerhead or Ragewarden, so including them in your deck may be the boost you need.

But not all great combinations with her come from cards. Her default trait, Korethus Preserver, gives her +1 power as long as your Core has full health. And since her Skill heals your Core for 2, it shouldn’t be too hard to keep your Core at full health, at least in the early stages of the match, so try to turn this into your advantage.
Her second trait, Forbidden Knowledge, will allow you to draw an extra card at the start of your first turn. Letting you have a small, but often significant card advantage over your opponent. No effort is a wasted effort.
However, if you prefer a more tactical approach, perhaps her third trait is a perfect fit for you. Rogue Ritualist will add a reap effect to Reina’s Skill, causing her to obtain a Sanguine Enhancement every time she kills a unit with it. This trait rewards calculated players, since Sanguine Enhancement is a 2-cost ability card that adds +1/+1 stats to a unit, letting you further buff the ones that will help you achieve victory.

While Reina can be a solid Avatar for beginners thanks to her Skill that brings sustainability, to really utilize her strengths as an Avatar, a more strategic approach to both deck-building and playing is a way to go.

Avatar Origin: Reina

Dear Denizens of Issilith!

A scholar and a leader of the famous elite mercenary tracking squad. Not necessarily attributes one would put together. But that was Reina in a nutshell. Driven by the thrill and with an insatiable thirst for knowledge, her skillset was more than enough to give her team a significant edge in tracking all kinds of marks. Until one day….

Reina’s squad started to receive very peculiar reports. It first started with a farmhand that was found dead in the middle of the field, drained of blood. While blood-sucking creatures aren’t so unusual to find here, nothing else suggested they were the ones responsible. Tracks found nearby pointed to a grarg, but this wasn’t how the grarg’s victim would look like. Everything they found was either inconclusive or contradictory. And a few weeks later, the same story. Only this time, the attacker left an eyewitness. The creature was described as shrouded in darkness, with two short red streaks that were probably its eyes. The witness also claimed they were frozen in place due to some force the creature used. It could easily be because of fear, but Reina will take any clue she can. Due to its description, they’ve aptly dubbed the creature Shadowstalk but they still couldn’t identify the attacker.
Months later - a breakthrough. As the attacks became more frequent, Shadowstalk was bound to make a mistake. And Reina and her squad waited prepared. Near one of the victims, they’ve found the clues that may help them track the beast back to its lair. This was the opportunity they waited for months! But before they’ll set out to find it, Reina needed to spend a few days extensively researching while her squad prepared for the hunt in front of them.

They’ve left the Drakkorith Empire and started to track the creature over the Vast Marsh trying to find its lair. And every time they thought they’ve found it, it turned out to be nothing more than its temporary hiding spot. And they’d continue their search every time. Even when their path started to go into the Cursed Woods, the territory of the mighty Vestige witches, they kept going until they reached the border between the Cursed Woods and Ancient Graveyard. Everything pointed to a large crypt that the Shadowstalk was most likely using as its primary lair. The one located on the border of this eerie place. So they’ve set up a camp nearby to rest before they confront Shadowstalk. After all, they might be fools for going into The Graveyard of their own will, but they are not stupid fools.
With the first dawning light, they set out to find the Shadowstalk. It didn’t take them long before they located the crypt. There were clear grarg tracks at the entrance, so this had to be the place. Cautiously, they went in. The walls of the crypt were covered in cobwebs and a dark fog engulfed the floor beneath them. It looked like something was laying in the middle of the room, amidst all that fog. As they slowly got closer, they recognized a grarg and it looked like it was sleeping soundly. Its size matched their expectations and the tracks around matched the ones they’ve followed all across Solgard. So they went closer to check. If this was Shadowstalk they have to eliminate it, fast. No one wants to stay in the Graveyard longer than needed. But as they got closer, it became apparent that the grarg was actually dead, and it didn’t take long before Reina realised that it wasn’t just dead, it was an old carcass, older than any of the tracks they were trailing. Confused by this conundrum, the squad started to question if this was indeed the right place, and at that moment the fog started to move. As the mist started to rise and violently swirl around the crypt, a sinister feeling washed over them. It looks like their true enemy has yet to show itself.
The mist formed spear-like shapes and pierced through Reina’s teammates. Even though it didn’t leave any marks on their body, as the mist became more crimson, Reina’s squad started to fall to the ground one by one. The swirling mist now concentrated in one spot in front of her. Without a shadow of a doubt, Reina now knew what they’d been hunting. Or more precisely, what has been hunting them. It was sangronarch, a malevolent spirit that can take over other creatures giving them supernatural powers and a hunger for blood. It must have lured them back to its crypt, the source of its power, so it can make Reina its new host. That is the only explanation for why Reina is still standing. Physical weapons can’t harm ephemeral foes, but her being scared would only help sangronarch. As the spirit extended its long, shadowy arms toward Reina, it established a mental link so it can feed on her feelings of dread and hopelessness while slowly taking over its new host. It relished every second until it felt a massive change in her emotions. Dread became excitement, hopelessness transformed into determination, and in a split second, the attacker was the one feeling fear. At that moment, Reina swung her scythe and with one swift, precise strike, she killed the spirit.

Reina suspected sangronarch to be a culprit behind the attacks after they’ve become more frequent so she did her research. And good thing she did since now she knew how to defeat her enemy. And not just that, she can even try to take its power for herself if she timed her actions right. Which is exactly what she did. When the sangronarch transfers its power to a new host, it will become vulnerable for a very short time. So she knew that was time to strike.
Now, with a new power coursing through her veins, Reina felt as though the whole ordeal was worth it. She is now the first sentient being that managed to stole sangronarch’s power. But she can’t let anyone know what happened, otherwise she would be publicly executed. However, Reina can keep her secret. She even joined the Drakkorith military, quickly progressing through the ranks until she became a general. Now you can always find her on the front lines of battle, where the battle is most intense, where no one will notice her feeding on the frenzy of battle to keep her bloodthirst under control.

Card Art Showcase: Pholgist Dervish

Dear Denizens of Issilith!

Issilith is home to many creatures, so it’s needless to say that some are good, and some are bad. And you can’t talk about bad creatures if you don’t speak of fiends. Part of them will bother you only if you cross your path with them, while others will have no problem hunting you down. While their motifs can differ, the result will usually be the same for their prey - bad.

Pholgists, a subrace of Pholgons, are lesser demons that enjoy possessing near-death creatures and giving them new life. While that may not seem so bad itself, the reason why they do it is the disturbing part.
Pholgists are both malicious and patient, a truly deadly combination. Once they’ve set their eyes on the next settlement to raid, they will hide near it for weeks, performing their dark rituals. If left unchecked, they can even invoke a meteor from the sky and obliterate the settlement, creating the perfect playing ground. You can find them revelling in such destruction, dancing on the charred ground, and blowing each other up in the most explosive ways. And all of that just for kicks and giggles.
These situations occur so frequently that almost every settlement now has a special scouting party that searches for these vile creatures, hoping to stop them before it’s too late.

Pholgist Dervish is one of those vile creatures. This 4-cost neutral unit has 2/5 stats and swift, meaning it can attack after it moves. To make things even worse, every time Pholgist Dervish changes zone, it will deal 2 damage to the enemy Core, regardless of the blockers! This creature truly has only mischief and destruction on its mind.

LORE: Why do Zyxls hate Primuses? (The Divide)

“The lives of Mother Issilith’s creatures are all connected, my child. Every action has its consequence, and often, for one to get what it wants, the other has to lose. The same thing happened during The Divide when the Icy Frontier began to stand on its own, and the big feud between small creatures with huge egos was born...”

At the southmost part of the Issilith, the Icy Frontier lies. This ice-bound vastness shrouded with permafrost and the barren lands brings no comfort. On the top of the highest peak, where the ice is charged with mana, the Primuses reside. A long time ago, this place was a part of Solgard. But in the time of the Dragon War, when the Drakkorith nation wanted to expand their mighty Empire, the Primuses just didn’t want to be a part of this worldly affair. But the solution to their problems was nowhere in sight…

Being a Primus is not a destiny one simply chooses. One is either born with this potential or not. Lythrik, a small Zyxl, was one of the creatures who had great potential. At least for a Zyxl. So he set out on a journey to find the Primuses and see if he was chosen to become one of them. That would be such a great honour! Once he found them, it turned out that he had a gift to gaze into the Web itself - a quality all Primuses had. Lythrik was praised among his kin, and such a hero in their midst must have an honorary title! So he became known as Lythrik the Smartest. Even though he may be the smartest of Zyxls, no matter how hard he tried, he just couldn’t impress the Primuses. He spent years training and trying to prove himself so they would accept him and make him one of his own. But that day never came.
At least until he overheard them talking about how bothered with other races they are. They only yearned for peace so they could dedicate themselves to magic. Maybe he can’t impress them with his magical prowess, but he is The Smartest of the Zyxls after all. He was confident he could find a solution. And the little Zyxl did. His great idea was to separate the Primuses from the rest by splitting the continent. Such a crazy idea never crossed their mind before. Although it seemed impossible, the Primus are powerful creatures, and if anyone could cast such an incredible spell, it would be them. But a spell of that magnitude needed a powerful catalyzer. So the elders helped Lythrik to find a suitable one. It had to be strong, pure, and easily accessible because they need a lot of it. Luckily for them, they didn’t have to look for long. All they needed were large quantities of purified gold.

Drunken with their praises for finding the solution, Lythrik gave away the locations where they could find it - inside the Zyxl gold strongholds. Because if there is one thing that Zyxls love more than themselves, it’s gold, and he knows exactly where they are. However, poor little Lythrik didn’t think about the consequences that revealing such information would entail. When he realised what he had done, it was already too late. The Primuses created superior constructs that would help them raid these strongholds so they could grab as much gold as possible. The Zyxls didn’t stand a chance against these powerful spellcasters and their craftsmanship. Their weak resistance was easily broken and the raids were a success, the Primuses had enough gold to perform their ritual. And so they did. They split the part of Solgard and drifted from the mainland. That part became known as the Icy Frontier, while the part of Solgard where The Divide happened is today known as Glaciris.

After the ritual, all the gold used turned to ash, and it wasn’t long until the Zyxls learned that it was Lythrik, the one they praised so much, the same one that betrayed them. So Lythrik was branded as a traitor and exiled from their empire. And from that day forth, he was known as Lythrik, Not the Smartest. Unable to go back to his kin, Lythrik stayed with the Primuses, living in his shame, neither a Primus nor a part of Zyxl.

“Who could have known that such a small and simple creature could influence the world on such a scale? To this day, Zyxls never forgave Primuses for their misdeeds. And while they know they can’t go head-to-head with them, they’re content with stealing from them. They will take at least twice as much as the Primuses stole from them! A small justice for their suffering..”
