Tutorial

Dear Denizens of Issilith!

One reoccurring comments we get regarding the game is that Phageborn can be a bit too complex for beginner players. It's very important for us that all our players can enjoy our game regardless of their experience in this game genre. So, after a lot of hard work, we are proud to present to you our first Tutorial!

For now, while it is still a work in progress, the tutorial is divided into 4 short lessons, each of them introducing some of the fundamental mechanics Phageborn uses.
First, the Intro lesson, explains the basics of the game, like win condition and how the zones work. In the second lesson, Positioning, you will learn more about moving, how the combat works, and things every Avatar can do. Skill Mastery will illustrate how Energy, Avatar skills, and targeting works. And the final lesson, On the Draw, is made to give you a bit more insight into Attributes and their leveling, as well as into subduing the Avatars.

We're looking to start the testing on the 21st of April (check out our Discord for more info). Once that happens, the tutorial will be one of the things which will be looked at heavily. So feel free to leave your feedback on it again once you've been able to try the tutorial for yourself, it would be greatly appreciated!

Announcing our new Battle Pass plans

Dear Denizens of Issilith!

Making a game like Phageborn we know how critical it is to make sure we focus on keeping true to our community while making a game that you can be proud to play. The key to this is providing you with reasons to keep coming back and that means we need to be able to make sure we can continue to develop content for the game.

We passionately believe it's important to delve deeper into the lore, give you exciting and challenging missions, explore the history of the factions, and other cool features over time. Doing this requires constant development and we have to make sure that we are able to give you the best experience we can, rewarding you for coming with us on this thrilling journey, and make the game better for everyone playing. At the end of the day, we want to make sure we can keep working on a game you enjoy playing, and that we love making.

We need to find a way to support the game based on the value we deliver to you the players. That’s just not possible with a single up-front price for the game. Instead we want to find a way to unlock the game for everyone, and support the game by making exceptional content experiences that you love and that keeps you playing over and over again.

So we are planning to drop the up-front price and instead move to a Battle Pass Model which rewards actually playing the game. But we think its vital that we make sure that everyone who has supported us so far gets treated like the champions they are!

So here is what we are planning…

***Importantly this is an ongoing discussion***

We are not going to sell Card Packs!

We have listened to you and understand that for many of you it's important that we don’t sell ‘booster packs’ of cards (unlike many other card games). Instead, we will continue to make sure that you can unlock cards through ‘Seal Trees’ earned from playing the game; learning them and mastering as you go. We will share more about how ‘Seal Trees’ work in future posts!!

We are going to add Battle Passes

The game will have a set of missions updated each week that will allow you to unlock content as part of each Battle Pass that everyone can take part in. That means that anyone can earn items from the Battle Pass no matter what. But there will be extra missions for you if you buy the Battle Pass as well.
A key thing here is that you can unlock what you want from the Pass when you want to, either as soon as you can or taking your time getting to the other items whilst the Pass is still active. Special items may sometimes be locked behind levels or specific quests , but if you have your eye on an especially shiny cosmetic for your favourite Avatar, it's up to you if you want to grab that first! What is in each Battle Pass will change too, but we want to make sure that it is deeply tied into the story and built on the Lore. We even plan on having some in-game events that will spice up how you play, all linked to the Battle Pass that is going at the time.

BattlePasses will include:
  • New Cards (obtainable by everyone – no pay to win)
  • New Battlegrounds (each with unique music)
  • New Avatar Skins
  • New Foils
  • New Avatar voice lines
  • …and many more new things that we haven’t introduced yet (We don’t want to spoil everything).

Everyone who has bought the game before 20th of April 2022 will get a Founders Pass

If you have bought our game up until the 20th of April 2022 you will permanently unlock the following:
  • Ability to create a Guild (Anyone can join one)
  • Access to Ranked mode queue
  • Uncapped deck slots (We are still designing how many slots premium players will have)
  • Special Founder’s tag
  • Unique King Tyberiuth skin
  • …other perks we are still designing

But most importantly ***you will get the first year’s Battle Passes included for free!!***

Anyone can play for FREE

We want to make the game available for everyone. We will do so at full release of the game for anyone to play but free players will have some restrictions. These include:
  • Not being able to create a guild (but able to join)
  • Only access to the Casual mode Queue
  • Capped Deck slots (Again we are still exploring the numbers)
  • Normal quests only

But! We are also looking at offering players a one-time purchase option to unlock these restrictions, whether or not they buy a BattlePass - we would love to know what you think?

Also! We are thinking about whether we should offer people who didn’t manage to unlock some items from the previous month’s Battle Pass to be able to pay for what they missed? Certain items would only be available from playing missions in the game.

We want to hear what you think about this.

Desert Battleground Sneak Peek

Dear Denizens of Issilith!

While some of the old 2D battlegrounds still wait their turn to get a makeover, our Desert battleground just got its new look.

Located all over the vast, barren continent of the Pyrelian Wasteland, the desert regions are filled with many dangers. Some nomadic tribes travel to the desert but they never stay around for too long. While the scorching sun and searing sands make the conditions almost unbearable, real peril hides behind those who are attracted to this place: mercenaries, assassins, fools, and those who are desperate.

Check out the Desert battleground Sneak Peek and its clickables on YouTube: YouTube.

Who knows, you might even be able to play on it sooner than you think...

Basic Mechanics: Drakkorith Faction

„On your journey throughout this gargantuan planet that is named Issilith, you will find yourself face to face with many races that call this place their home. Some will be friendly, some will be wicked and cruel, some just won't care. But it's up to you to make yourself prepared for the greatest adventure of your life. And the easiest way to do so is to listen to the stories of the old Storyteller. For those who do not learn from the past are doomed to repeat it..“

They are mighty, they are deadly, their Empire is the mightiest of them all. They will gladly lay down their life, all for the glory and the preservation of the great Drakkorith nation. With their focus on the tangible and visible things, martial prowess, weapon mastery, and combat skills are held in high regard. This military-oriented faction translates its characteristics well into its in-game representation.

Drakkorith's units are one of the best for direct combat. Some of them can tank multiple attacks before they succumb thanks to high health and armor, some can attack multiple units at once with their cleave, and juggernauts, well, they can slice through the enemy's Core effortlessly. The synergy between Drakkorith's units and their Avatars has always been nothing less than stellar, just like with their soldiers and generals. It is not only that their Avatars directly buff their units, some will passively gain power as their Avatars attack, becoming a bigger and bigger threat with each passing turn. Some will buff their Avatars, giving them or their special attacks additional power. While going over the factions cards, it is obvious that a lot of them synergize well with leadership. That can be an extra incentive to opt for a more leadership heavy playstyle, and with the extra health Avatars get from the leveling of leadership (except for Basson which gains extra damage on his skill), using Avatars to destroy enemy units more often and make a significant board dominance may seem like a natural thing to do. But don't neglect your Energy! In case you forgot, special attacks are actually energy cards, so level your attributes accordingly!

While they have a lot of strong points, their aggressive approach can bring their Avatar's health quite low. Cards that can bring confusion onto the battleground and prevent attacks or favourable trades Drakkorith's tend to engage in, can be their downfall if the player is not careful.

„Even the mightiest of them all can fall. Don't underestimate your opponents in the battle, my child. It can cost you dearly... Feel free to join our Discord community (Discord) and share your thoughts with other Residents of Issilith. We will patiently listen…“

Avatar Showcase: Basson

Dear Denizens of Issilith!

Today we will use this opportunity to showcase one of the Drakkorith's finest leaders, Basson, The Unstoppable Force. The tale of this strong and somewhat savage Drakkorith is surely a remarkable one.

When he was a kid, still very young and inexperienced, Basson and his father were attacked by the Great Iron Beast in the wild. During that encounter, the vicious Beast killed his father, and young Basson barely survived the assault, only by feigning death. After that, in Basson's mind and heart there was a place for just one thing: revenge. He spent decades in training, fueled by rage, preparing himself for the time he will track down the Great Iron Beast and execute his retribution. Finally, Basson managed to track down the Beast and they engaged in what can only be described as an epic battle. During this brutal encounter, the Beast managed to ram its horn into the side of Basson's jaw, thrusting it as deep as it can, practically impaling Basson's head onto its horn. Then, in one swift and powerful move, it swung its head to the side and it mangled Basson's lower jaw, removing it from his face with incredible ease. However, even then Basson didn't fall down on his knees. He could not fall here and now, not while revenge was so close to his grasp. He would NOT fall! Basson felt like all the rage he ever felt in his life was pumping through his body and he lost himself in this feeling, letting it take over. It was as though godlike strength was bestowed upon him and with it, he finally managed to completely obliterate the Great Iron Beast. So he stood there victorious, blood flowing from where his jaw was over the corpse, soaking the earth beneath him. The mighty hammer barely supported his weight as his newfound strength started to fade from him. His revenge is fulfilled. He would die a warriors' death. And he smiled as he went down...
His almost lifeless body was found by scouts from the nearby encampment which tended to his wounds. During the recovery, he managed to persuade his saviors to install a metal jaw on his head, taken from none other than the Great Iron Beast itself. Now, Basson is the leader of the Outcast tribes, his heartiness and sense of right and wrong is only matched by his savage rage. The Unstoppable Force, the name given to him by his followers, truly reflects what he is, a force to be reckoned with.

Basson's special skill, Destroyer Stance, makes his next basic attack that turn deal damage equal to your leadership when attacking Avatars. However, this skill has a passive effect which disables Basson from gaining health from leveling leadership.
As with every other Avatar, when playing with Basson you can choose between three traits. His first trait, Overpowering blow, increases your juggernaut damage by 2. Keep this in mind while creating your deck and try to add cards that would synergize well with this trait.
Highlander's focus, Basson's second trait, reduces the cost of a random energy card in your hand that costs more than 0 by 1 if at the start of your turn there are no local-friendly units. This trait may be up your alley if playing the leadership decks doesn't fit your playstyle completely.
Last Basson's trait you can choose from is Impenetrable rage. Whenever you use Basson's skill, his health can't be reduced below 1 until the end of the turn. This can allow you to clear out some of the stronger enemy units without having to sacrifice your Avatar or units. Just don't forget to switch Basson to the safer lane after his health fell to 1 otherwise your opponent may use the opportunity to subdue your low health Avatar.
