The State of Early Access - Update #05

It is time for another State of Early Access! Last time, we announced multiple upcoming features and outlined our plans for the game up to v1.0. Today, we would like to give you an update on where we are and how things are going!

2023 was a very productive year for Farthest Frontier. The game received 5 major updates (not including smaller hotfixes):
  • We took our first major stab at optimization in v0.8.1, improving performance across the board.
  • V0.8.2 added numerous highly requested qualify of life features, including building counters, Arborist automation, Graveyard and Town Center relocation, automatic compost, cloud saving, and more.
  • V0.8.3 introduced infinite endgame resources with deep mines, quarries, and forestry. V0.9.0 was our anniversary update, and we made sure to celebrate with a bang.
  • With v0.9.0, we added the Spirituality system, which not only allows you to create your own custom faith for your people but also made exploring the map more fun with ancient ruins. We also added the paper industry, guilds, and the removal of the population cap.
  • Finally v0.9.1, which released last month, laid the foundation for of our upcoming combat improvements with the addition of raider encampments, which again made exploring the map more compelling (and dangerous), but also more rewarding as bringing the fight to the raiders not only earned you loot but delayed future raids. But as we are always committed to MOAR, v0.9.1 also added crypts, droughts, map-based weather and storage limits.

Note: everything you read here is a preview and is subject to change before release. This is not an all-encompassing list of every feature in the works. Nothing is set in stone, until it is!

Farthest Frontier v0.9.1 is now live!

Farthest Frontier's latest update has now gone live!

With this patch, new towns will contend with raider encampments on the map, which you can vanquish to earn loot and delay future raids on your settlement. Crypts will ensure that your centuries old towns have room to respectfully bury your dead, and storage limits at last give you full control over where you want your resources stored and in what quantities.

1 year ago today

Today marks the 1 year anniversary of Farthest Frontier’s early-access launch and we’re incredibly pleased with how the game has been received and has sold thus far. Already nearing a million copies sold, with a current 30-day user rating of 88% and average monthly player numbers that are often double or triple what Grim Dawn saw during early-access, Farthest Frontier is so far outperforming Grim Dawn’s early-access run by every metric.

We think an especially positive sign of our success in early-access though is that Farthest Frontier has maintained a higher user rating than Grim Dawn at its lowest points and we’ve been steadily increasing that as we’ve continually refined, optimized and expanded Farthest Frontier over the course of the last year. Grim Dawn currently stands at 93% positive and we are confident, in time, through our continued effort, we will get Farthest Frontier up to that level of player enjoyment or beyond.

While feature / content updates may have initially been slow, the team did a lot of heavy-lifting after release, refactoring complex systems, optimizing and bug-fixing to first address many of the most glaring issues players experienced. In the past 6 months though, we’ve ramped up work on new features and content, greatly expanding the game with quality-of-life features, forestry, deep mines, quarries, the paper industry, and our unique take on spirituality and faith. The next 6 months promise to be just as exciting with an expanded combat system, new combat units, raider camps, new farm animals, achievements, mod support, and more on the way!

Farthest Frontier v0.9.0 is now live!

Pleased to announce that Farthest Frontier's largest update yet has just gone live!

With this patch, you will fulfill your people's spiritual needs and explore the map to uncover forgotten relics! Your industries will flourish with the addition of the paper industry and its Guild Hall!

2022's best survival city builder will let you 'customize your faith' with a new religion system

When survival city builder Farthest Frontier launched into early access in 2022, players noted a pretty big omission. City building games, especially those inspired by the medieval period, typically have religious buildings like churches or chapels that can be built near homes to provide a satisfaction or happiness bonus for citizens...
