Terraria State of the Game - February 2022

Greetings Terrarians!

In case you missed it, 2022 is certainly turning into a lovely year for Terraria! From starting the year with a pair of awards to last month's reveal of the big "parity" update for Console & Mobile Terrarians to this month's surprise sneak peek into the upcoming - and aptly named - Labor of Love Update for Terraria, how can you not love all that is going on in the world of Terraria right now? Of course, we couldn't do any of this without the love and support that you show us each and every day. So thank you, once again and we love you all!

Now... on with the show!

PC - RE-LOGIC
TERRARIA - STEAM DECK UPDATE (1.4.3.3)
With the Steam Deck officially launching yesterday, we pushed out our Steam Deck Optimization Update in parallel. This update contains both changes targeted towards Steam Deck and non-Deck players. The changes outside of the Deck stuff are mostly focused on bug fixes and some quality of life/balance tweaks. Bigger changes are coming down the road in the Labor of Love Update (for more information on that, keep reading!). For a full set of notes on the Steam Deck Optimization Update, check out the dedicated link below!
TERRARIA STEAM DECK OPTIMIZATION UPDATE (1.4.3.3) RELEASE NOTES

TERRARIA - LABOR OF LOVE UPDATE
In case you missed the big reveal a week or so ago, renowned Terraria influencer/content creator/all around superstar and great guy ChippyGaming had a world exclusive reveal of the upcoming Labor of Love Update for Terraria. Rather than go over all of that again, why not re-share the reveal video AND a follow-up video that delves deeper into some spoiler-y goodness that has been revealed since!

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

...and seriously, if you have not subscribed to Chippy's channel, you need to get on that immediately!

Oh... and our resident QA expert Leinfors shared this little goodie on Twitter earlier this week:

What else does Labor of Love have in store? When will it arrive? Well, you will have to stay tuned to find out!

The level of quality and quantity on the Terraria Steam Workshop keeps on growing and growing - with over 50,000 packs and worlds so far, you are missing out if you haven't taken the time to check out the Workshop yet. What are you waiting for?!
WHAT ELSE IS GOING ON?
Well, besides some good-natured fun with our Twitter locations (just keeping you all on your toes) and work on Labor of Love, we remain in the planning stages for our second game. What that might be and so on and so forth will be shared in due time, but likely not any time soon.

TMODLOADER NEWS - TML TEAM

Hello everyone!

The TML Team remains hard at work as we inch closer and closer to getting this thing done! We saw some notable performance improvements this month, but the big feature we're working on currently is a monthly release cycle with preview and stable streams. As you are likely aware, in the past there has always been a bit of a disconnect between tML updates and updates on specific mods - where the modders have to wait on a tML update to release and then scramble to update their mods accordingly.

This new feature will allow modders to be be able to respond to new tML features and changes - and get their mods ready in advance - by developing and testing against the preview version. Then, at the end of each month, ideally, people playing on stable will get simultaneous tML and mod updates, and should be able to continue their playthroughs unimpeded. Solxan has been busy working on this new deployment, and when we have it ready and tested we will encourage all modders to port their mods to 1.4.

Beyond that, the TML 1.4 Alpha remains available for you to check out. Again, please keep in mind that this Alpha is primarily intended for developers as an audience - so play around with it at your own risk!

https://steamcommunity.com/app/1281930/discussions/0/3051733836205288319/

As always, you can keep track the current progress and such more in real time at tModLoader/tModLoader (But note that the completion percentage doesn't mean anything, because issues and PRs don't have weights.)

Developers who are willing to contribute may do so by doing PRs to the tModLoader/tModLoader branch. (See tModLoader/tModLoader)

CONSOLE/SWITCH/MOBILE CONTENT PARITY TO 1.4.3 REMAINS THE FOCUS
Given that we do not really know the timing or full content of the Labor of Love update as well as all of the already-completed work on 1.4.1 - 1.4.3 for Consoles and Mobile, the team made the decision to keep plowing ahead with our original plans. That means we will be focused on getting "current" parity into players' hands as quickly as possible. Now, there is a chance Labor of Love comes out first (which means we better rename this update) or there is a chance that this is a parity update that is then followed by PC jumping ahead again for a time. In either case, the team will be pivoting to bringing 1.4.4 to everyone just as soon as possible after the release of 1.4.1 - 1.4.3 plus any fixes needed.

So, with that topic taken care of, who wants to see more goodies coming your way in the Parity Update? How about a quick look at what's going on in The Constant seed?

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]

Want more? Ok then, fine!
We are happy to reveal that our current trajectory has us on track to deliver the parity (1.4.3) update to everyone sometime in April 2022.
To be clear, there are a lot of moving parts here to make this happen – not the least of which are the various review processes from Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, etc. – so things could slip either way a bit as we are trying to bring every platform out at the same time. As we get a better sense and that window tightens up, we will be sure to share it with you all just as soon as we can!

We are, of course, aware of some of the larger remaining bits (further KB+M work, Online+Splitscreen MP, etc) - and we still plan to get to these! Thanks so much for your feedback and reporting - with your help, we are able to fine tune and sort out issues to create a better Terraria experience for everyone!

Mobile news is much the same as the news for consoles... except that we can share that Mobile progress has gone smashingly well so far. What's that you say? You deserve a spoiler too? Well we agree! Check out these familiar friends that stopped by for a visit on Mobile Terraria...

It is our plan to bring Mobile and Console Parity out all together, all at once (send us your positive vibes please!) - and Mobile timing will be the same as shared above: April 2022.
ANIMEGAMI STUDIOS REVEALS TERRARIA MINI-BIOMES - Your Feedback is Requested
The fantastic folks over at Animegami Studios, hot on the heels of the amazing Forest Biome piece (which is amazing if you haven't checked it out) has heard the desires of the Terraria community for a more accessible piece (or pieces) price-wise. The video below is a showcase of just that - the Terraria Mini-Biome series. With a target price point in the ~$100-$150 range, the team hopes that these are something far more Terrarians can get into in the event that they don't want to go all-in on something as extravagant as the Forest Biome piece. On top of that, the team would love to have your feedback on these pieces and more - so please take a few moments to check out the video and give them your thoughts via the Google Form link below!

Terraria gets yet another update before Labor of Love

Terraria has now reached the stage where it's had so many final updates that even the jokes about them are getting exhausting. But hey, I'm not going to complain about further Terraria updates. The 1.4.4 patch, dubbed the Labor of Love update, is still on the way, but before then the developers have another, smaller update, sprucing up the game for Steam Deck compatibility and making some additional changes.

"When we sat down to enjoy Terraria on the Steam Deck for the first time," the devs say in the announcement, "we immediately realised that we needed to make a few tweaks to fully take advantage of all that this new system has to offer." To that end, they've built a default control setup for the Deck - which you're free to customise as you like, of course. If you're curious about battery life, the devs say they "typically get between 3.5 and 5.5 hours of playtime between charges - depending on brightness settings as well as the intensity of action in the game".

But 1.4.3.3, which is live now, isn't purely about Steam Deck optimisations. You can follow the link above for the full details, but the highlights include a big rebalance for the Deerclops, and some changes for NPC happiness, which should make it a bit easier to keep your AI friends pleased.

Terraria 1.4.3.3 - Steam Deck Optimization Update Release Notes

Greetings Terrarians!

As we have mentioned over the past few months, the team has been hard at work on an update to further optimize Terraria for Steam Deck play - inclusive of performance and controls. With the Steam Deck officially shipping out to players starting today, we are pleased to be able to push this update out to everyone just in time! For Terrarians that are not playing on Steam Deck at this time, dont fret, as we have some quality of life, balance, and bug fixes for you as well. Without further ado, let's dive right in!

Please note that this update also includes an update to the Terraria Dedicated Server application. You can always find the latest version of this at the bottom of Terraria.org, but we have included a link below for today's version as well:

TERRARIA STEAM DECK CONTROLS

Beyond technical under the hood performance optimizations and such, what else do we mean when we say "optimizing Terraria for Steam Deck"? Well one area of focus has been controls.

When we sat down to enjoy Terraria on the Steam Deck for the first time, we immediately realized that we needed to make a few tweaks to fully take advantage of all that this new system has to offer. Above and beyond the default touch controls provided by Steam Deck (which we may look to improve on in the future), we put together the little graphic below to show you how we have optimized things for all of the controls available on the Steam Deck:
Left Trackpad
– This gives you access to a handful of often-used commands right at your fingertips:
 • Up > Quick Heal
 • Left > Quick Buff
 • Right > Quick Mana
 • Down > Mount/Dismount
Right Trackpad
– This provides the player with a manual cursor, akin to using a mouse or a trackpad on a laptop
 • Pressing in the Right Trackpad acts as if you have pressed the Shift key on your keyboard
Back Buttons
– These will give you easy and ready access to all of your minimap and game window zoom options:
 • Bottom Left > Minimap Zoom Out
 • Bottom Right > Minimap Zoom In
 • Top Left > World Zoom Out
 • Top Right > World Zoom In
Battery Life
- We have done a handful of battery life tests on our development kit playing Terraria, and we find that we can typically get between 3.5 and 5.5 hours of playtime between charges – depending on brightness settings as well as the intensity of action in the game.

Obviously, Terraria is a game with a lot of possibilities in the way in which you can control things and in the demand for controls/buttons to get the job done. We are super happy to be able to take full advantage of the additional space on the control map provided by Steam Deck in order to help streamline your Terraria adventures and make controlling your character and world feel “just right”. Of course, all of these are just defaults that we think feel great - but everything is remappable in case you disagree and want to change things up!

CHANGES & BALANCE
GENERAL CHANGES
• Summoned Minions, Sentries, and their projectiles should no longer harm critters
 • Updated Bundle of Balloons' sprite to reflect the items that went into it better
 • When placing a Graveyard-crafted version of a natural backwall directly next to a natural version of that wall, they should now merge seamlessly rather than having a large border between them
 • Skeletron now drops Healing Potions instead of Lesser Healing Potions. This same drop will also be applied to Deerclops, though Queen Bee will continue to drop her Bottled Honey instead.
 • Flinx Fur now requires less to research in Journey mode
 • All food (except Ale and Sake) now require less to research in Journey mode
 • All Biome crates, as well as Dungeon and Obsidian Lockboxes, now require less to research in Journey mode
 • Black and Pink Pearls are now more common when opening Oysters. Their sell value has been proportionally reduced.
 • Obsidian can now be mined by Pickaxes of 55% mining power or higher (for example, Gold Pickaxe)
 • When defeating the Wall of Flesh in Classic mode, it will now always drop 1 weapon and 1 emblem, like Expert treasure bags do
 • Heart and Star Statues are now twice as likely to be found in worldgen compared to other statues
 • Increased Web Shooter's range by 25%
 • Piranha Gun's Piranhas should now be much better able to keep up with rapidly moving enemies, assuming that enemy isn't teleporting or briefly becoming invulnerable
 • Changed Fairy Wing's recipe to only take 99 Pixie Dust instead of 100 (as 99 is the max stack for Pixie Dust)
 • Stained Glass now sells for a more reasonable value, compared to the gems used to make it
 • Optimized worldgen during the Desert chest placement stage
 • The Virtual Keyboard (in-game keyboard for Gamepad) is now used for IP/password entry and other Multiplayer text entry menus
DEERCLOPS
• The Guide now has a hint about how to find Deerclops if the player has not yet defeated it
 • Deerclops' HP values now scale at a modified rate in Expert and Master, like other bosses. As a result, it will now have a lower maximum HP in both Expert and Master.
 • The above fix also addresses an issue where Deerclops' HP did not scale UP with increased player count in Expert/Master multiplayer games
 • Deerclops now only remains present in the Snow biome for 1 day when no players are present, instead of 3 days.
 • Deerclops' boss bar will disappear from the screen when suitably far enough away from it that the boss fight is not active. It will re-appear again once the fight is resumed.
 • Fixed an oversight where Deerclops had 0 defense
 • After defeating Deerclops, it now only has a 25% chance to spawn again naturally under proper conditions. This was previously 100% chance.
 • Deerclops now drops potions on death; in this case, regular Healing Potions like Skeletron.
NPC HAPPINESS CHANGES
• Pylons now require a minimum of 2 NPCs under all conditions to be sold
 • The minimum required happiness for NPCs to sell Pylons is now more forgiving, with the number from 0.85 to 0.9 (the lower the number, the happier, with 1.0 being completely neutral). This means that it is now easier to make NPCs happy enough to sell a Pylon.
 • If an NPC is present in a hybrid biome (for example, the Hallowed Desert), and they like at least one of those biomes, then they will gain positive happiness from the biome they like. This will only work for a liked biome vs a neutral/disliked biome; it will not allow a neutral biome to overcome a disliked biome. This also does not override major unhappiness/housing invalidation due to being near the Corruption, Crimson, or Dungeon.
 • The number of NPCs you can have in a town before Crowded penalties begin to take effect has been increased by 1

BUG FIXES

 • Fixed an issue where the Eyebrella Cloud positioned itself oddly when a player is sleeping
 • Fixed an issue where a number of blocks which should have blocked light were not blocking light
 • Fixed an issue where Honey and Dry Bombs could not be placed on Weapon Racks
 • Fixed an issue where Torch God's projectiles from Corrupt Torches generated snow dust
 • Fixed an issue where Chester's Smart Cursor outline did not rotate with him when in the air
 • Fixed an issue where walking Goldfish couldn't be Corrupted/Crimson'd like other Goldfish
 • Fixed an issue where Desert Tiger did not bounce on enemies correctly if your Journey time settings were paused or sped up
 • Fixed a bug with lava fishing gear incorrectly impacting fishing time
 • Fixed an issue where Obsidian Armor had white item rarity even though, for its tier, it should have been a higher rarity color
 • Fixed an issue where Lucy didn't speak if you cut down Palm Trees or Cacti
 • Fixed some issues involving Jungle Shrines and Giant Mahogany Trees, where overlapping generation could cause broken chests
 • Fixed an issue where Star-generating Cloak accessories did not properly sync their star generation in multiplayer
 • Fixed a multiplayer issue where Plantera's spore projectiles were not syncing properly
 • Fixed an issue where the Electrified debuff had an inaccurate and non-informative buff info text
 • Fixed an issue causing Elf Melter to use 2 ammo per use
 • Fixed an issue where Chain Guillotine's chain would vanish at some angles
 • Fixed an issue where some UI Control text was broken in Polish language settings
 • Fixed an text-based multiplayer crash
 • Fixed rare crash when certain NPCs spawn in droves

Sorry, Re-Logic isn't teasing Terraria 2, it's just 'good fun' banter with fans

Terraria 2 was announced way back in 2013, although creator Andrew "Redigit" Spinks warned at the time that it was still "a ways out." He really wasn't kidding. A lot has happened since then—a spinoff game was announced, then cancelled, then maybe uncancelled, all while work on the original Terraria continued—but of Terraria 2, there has been no sign...

Re-Logic is trolling us with Terraria 2 teasers

It seems that nothing will stop Terraria from continuing to be updated - except maybe a sequel. To be clear, Terraria 2 has absolutely not yet been announced, but the devs are absolutely teasing its existence. A couple of knowing nods already have fans eagerly speculating on the possibilities.

Terraria creator Andrew 'Redigit' Spinks recently updated the location in his Twitter bio to say "Terraria 2 - a new age". Prolific Terraria YouTuber Chippy quickly picked up on the change, and fellow Terraria dev Whitney 'Cenx' Spinks dropped a Doctor Who gif warning of "spoilers", and adds that "Red is a massive troll. I wouldn't trust it. Or would I?" (And also made a Twitter bio change teasing "Terraria 2.5 the Final Update".)

So while Terraria 2 is still as-yet-unconfirmed, the devs are definitely willing to let us all go wild with speculation on its existence. After publishing about four final updates for the original, I can't imagine there's any better way to reveal a sequel to the world than by trolling everyone on Twitter.
