PTR: Rise of the Angry Earth

Greetings, Adventurers!

Aeternum is an ever-evolving world, and as such, we continue our efforts in providing our players with an assortment of ongoing new features, content, and changes. We are approaching the release of Rise of the Angry Earth and would like to once again invite you all to participate in this iteration of our Public Test Realm (PTR)!

Read on for this PTR's features and FAQ. The full list of release notes can be found on our website.
PTR
The Public Test Realm (PTR) is a limited-availability server-set that grants an early look at upcoming features. These preview builds are snapshots of upcoming major releases and are not final versions — you may encounter bugs, crashes, missing text, or other issues. Between our internal testing efforts and your reports, we hope to catch and resolve all serious issues before they reach the live servers. Hundreds of changes have already been made — with more to come — and the full release notes will be shared on release day. However, not every bug or feedback piece will be actioned on before release — some changes need time to be investigated further, and may arrive in a subsequent patch or two.

To help with the feedback process, all newly created PTR characters will have the opportunity to instantly level to select level-ranges outfitted with appropriate gear and items.

The PTR will officially open tomorrow, September 12, at 8AM PT (3PM UTC) and run until 8AM PT (3PM UTC) on September 18. If you encounter a bug, exploit, or have suggestions to improve a feature or piece of content, we’d love to hear your feedback on our Discord (you can also utilize our in-game feedback tool). We will do our best to address as much of your feedback as possible before the content update makes its way to our live servers. Your participation will help us to deliver awesome content and updates in the future!

During this iteration of the PTR, we look forward to hearing your playtest feedback on the following changes:
 • Elysian Wilds Zone
 • Rise of the Angry Earth Main Story Quest
 • Edengrove and Great Cleave Main Story Quest Revamp
 • The Savage Divide Expedition
 • Horse Mounts
 • Artifacts
 • Flail
 • Weapon/Perk changes
 • Primal Fury Heartrune
 • Trade Skill and Gear Score changes
 • Influence Race
 • Season 3 Rewards Track

Check out our official announcement for detailed breakdowns of what to expect.
PTR CLIENT ACCESS
This special preview client will be made available for download through the stand-alone Steam application, “New World Public Test Realm” (which should already be in your Steam library if you own the main game). When the test period is complete and the main New World game is updated with the previewed content, the PTR world will shut down and may be wiped clean. You will continue to see the New World PTR application in your Steam library, but there will not be an active server until the next time we announce a public test.
PTR BACKSTORY LOADOUTS
Upon character creation on the PTR, players will be given multiple caches of special armor and weapons. Each cache has a designation based upon a general build and a main attribute: CON, DEX, INT, FOC, and STR.

To help manage the sudden onset of new items, do not open all provided caches at once, or you’ll risk becoming encumbered! Instead, equip all provided bags and then follow-up with opening each cache deliberately. Any undesired caches can be dropped or deposited into your personal settlement storage.
PTR FAQ

HOW DO I ACCESS THE NEW PTR?
Everyone with a copy of New World will be automatically granted access to the secondary PTR app. The PTR is not compatible with the live game, so you will need to download a separate client (and have the hard drive space required to support it). From there, we will have special worlds available within supported regions. Not all regions will initially be supported. Access is on a first come, first served basis. There may be queues.
CAN I PLAY WITH OR TRANSFER MY LIVE CHARACTERS TO THE PTR?
Unfortunately, no. These are separate ecosystems, so at this time it is not possible. However, to make testing easier, we will occasionally provide our play-testers with special accommodations such as instant levels, special gear, etc.
CAN I PROVIDE DESIGN FEEDBACK REGARDING WHAT’S INCLUDED IN THE PTR?
Preview game builds on the PTR are finished with their core development and are in their final phase of testing and bug fixing. Our main focus at this phase is improving quality, although we will appreciate any feedback you have to share.
I HAVE A PROBLEM; HOW CAN I CONTACT CUSTOMER SUPPORT?
Our policies and Code of Conduct cover the PTR, and in-game moderation will continue to be supported. Unfortunately, due to the temporary and potentially unstable nature of the PTR, general Customer Service assistance through both Live Chat and through the Support Website will not be available.
I DON’T WANT TO PARTICIPATE IN THE PTR, CAN I REMOVE THE APP FROM MY LIBRARY?
Don’t worry, no offense taken. Players can manage visibility of the New World Public Test Realm Steam Library entry. Opening up the game options (right-click > Manage) offers the “Hide Game” function.

Check out our website for the full list of changes. Thanks for your support and we'll see you in Aeternum!

Flail Showcase

Greetings, Adventurers!

The Flail is a versatile one-handed weapon with the option for an offhand shield. Use arcane magic to enhance its attacks and buff allies or debuff enemies to aid in victory. Through a combination of melee, arcane magic, and strong defenses, the wielder can bolster their group’s effectiveness without having to drop the offensive. We joined the Design Team for a deeper look at the Flail’s design, weapon comparisons, and Weapon Mastery Trees, plus some other neat tidbits.

[previewyoutube][/previewyoutube]
GAMEPLAY DESIGN
What the Flail lacks in raw damage, it makes up for in survivability, support, and utility. Whether you swipe, thrust, strike, or unleash magical AoEs, all attacks have buffs/debuffs that alter their combat function.

Versatility is another notable quality of the weapon. Several Flail passives and upgrades function differently based on your shield type and the combat situation. This customization extends to playstyle. Most abilities feature support-focused attack upgrades, so solo players can potentially forego these skills to better spec themselves out for their own survival.
STATS:
• Attack speed: Medium
 • Effective range: Extended Melee
 • Buffs: High
 • Debuffs: High
 • Roles: Support and Tank
 • Strengths: Survivability, utility and versatility, support, defense
 • Weaknesses: Low damage, 1v1 combat
Unique Mechanics
 • Extra range: Flail tip extends during attacks to add additional reach.
 • Impairment: A status effect that combines both a damage over time effect and weaken.
WEAPON COMPARISON
Here’s a breakdown of how the Flail compares to other weapons:

Life Staff
 • Weaker than: Healing, Range
 • About the same as: DPS, Buffing
 • Stronger than: Debuffing, Melee
Void Gauntlet
 • Weaker than: Damage, Range, Healing
 • About the same as: Buffing/Debuffing
 • Stronger than: Crowd Control, Survivability
Sword/Shield
 • Weaker than: Fewer Defensive Actions, Tanking, DPS
 • About the same as: Buffing/Support
 • Stronger than: Utility, Ally Support
Hatchet
 • Weaker than: DPS, Speed
 • About the same as: Self buffing
 • Stronger than: Support
DAMAGE SCALING COMPARISON
Similar to the Sword, most Flail damage will scale to Strength, however the weapon’s utility and support will be linked to Focus instead of Dexterity. All healing, and various other support functions, scale exclusively with Focus.

Flail and Shield
 • Strength: 90%
 • Focus: 65%
Sword and Hatchet
 • Strength: 90%
 • Dexterity: 65%
Void Gauntlet
 • Intelligence: 90%
 • Focus 65%
Ice Gauntlet / Fire Staff
 • Intelligence: 100%
Life Staff
 • Focus: 100%
Greatsword
 • Strength: 80%
 • Dexterity: 80%
Great Axe and War Hammer
 • Strength: 100%
Spear
 • Strength: 65%
 • Dexterity: 90%
WEAPON PAIRINGS
The Flail is a solid weapon for Focus or Strength builds. Due to its support traits, it is not intended to be a strong DPS backup for other Focus builds. Aid in melee ranged combat and help your allies succeed with these suggested weapon pairings:
 • Flail / Life Staff - Focus and Support based weapon. The primary use is for self and group survival, and support/healing.
 • Flail / Void Gauntlet - Focus and Support based weapon. You can lean into the healing and support aspect, or utilize the Void Gauntlet's damaging abilities for a more versatile combination of damage and support.
 • Flail / Sword and Shield - Tank and Support focused. Its primary use is for self-survival, support, and drawing aggro.
 • Flail / War Hammer, Great Axe, Hatchet, or Greatsword - Off-Tank/DPS. This combination is used as a secondary on damage focused builds to add some survivability and buffing/support.
CLERIC WEAPON MASTERY TREE
Utilizes arcane magic to enhance the power of attacks while also buffing and healing allies and debuffing enemies.

Arcane Smite (Area denial and damage - upgradable support)
 • Strike the ground with arcane force to deal damage to all targets around the point of impact. A lingering area of effect attack will inflict Impairment to any remaining enemies.
 • Upgrades grant buffs and lifesteal
Arcane Vortex (Area of effect and damage - upgradeable support)
 • Swirl the Flail to create multiple hits of arcane energy around you and deal repeated damage to all nearby targets. This ability also creates an aura that empowers allies.
 • Upgrades grant healing and a cleanse.
Arcane Eruption (Damage over time and crowd control - upgradable support)
 • Strike the weapon against the ground to unleash an eruption of arcane energy in front you. This deals damage and inflicts Impairment. You’ll also automatically follow up with a strong melee attack.
 • Upgrades grant a small self-heal and a stronger chain heal to nearby allies.
Better Together Ultimate:
 • While within close proximity of allies, everyone will gain a passive heal over time.
Notable passive - Leader Of The Pack:
 • When no allies are nearby, you will deal increased damage.
 • When 1 or more allies are nearby, they will deal additional damage.
BASTION WEAPON MASTERY TREE
Utilizes crowd control and defensive strategies to buff self and support allies in combat.

Barrage (Gap closer and damage - upgradable support)
 • Sprint forward while passing through all allies and enemies, and blocking all frontal attacks. Upon reaching the max distance or manual activation, leap forward swirling the flail around and then slamming the flail into the ground dealing damage at the impact point.
 • Upgrade inflict some damage to the area around the impact point and Fortify allies within range.
Trip (crowd control)
 • Swing the Flail forward to trip a target in front of you and knock them to the ground.
 • Upgrades Rend target and Fortify self. You can also deliver a powerful follow up attack.
Warding Bludgeon (Defensive - upgradable support)
 • The most defensive Flail attack. Leap into the air and trigger a burst of energy to grant a defensive buff to yourself and all nearby allies before slamming down on nearby enemies.
 • Notable Upgrade - Best Friends - When activating the ability, you will become linked to a nearby ally. While the link is active, you both gain damage absorption, and the ally deals more damage.
Human Shield Ultimate:
 • Hitting a target with an ability while near an ally will grant them a buff. The ally’s damage taken is then reduced and absorbed by the Flail wielder.
Notable Passive - Vital Suppressant:
 • While above 50% health, damage taken is reduced.
 • While below 50% health, block stamina damage taken is reduced.

Get an early feel for the weapon during our next PTR and then look forward to the release of the Flail alongside Rise of the Angry Earth on October 3. Thanks for your support! We’ll see you in Aeternum.
MOUNTS IN OPEN WORLD PVP
Our goal for mounts in PvP is to minimize their impact on combat as much as possible. For example, you can’t summon your mount while in a combat state, summoning has a 2 second delay, and any PvP damage will cancel the summon. When riding, any damage from another player will dismount you and dismiss the mount. Damage from enemies can also force dismounts. However, there will be a degree of tolerance for lower level enemies who pose no significant threat.

To further reduce mount interference in open world PvP, the PvP timer that governs a player’s worth if killed will be paused when mounted, similar to a safe zone. Additionally, XP acquired when mounted will not count toward any bonus thresholds. We made a few adjustments after our own playtesting, so if we still feel like it's too easy to ride away from fights, we will retune.
CONCEPT ART
See how the Design Team brought mounts to life from early concept art:
LION
