Beware Baalphazu: Nightveil Hallow Event and Development

Shapes in the mist! Shrieks in the night! The demon Baalphazu, Marquis of Terror, and his horde of ghoulish Pumpkinites are spreading a living nightmare across Aeternum! Aid Salvatore the Mad in his quest to banish these foul terrors and collect a bounty of Nightveil Hallow rewards!

We spoke to the Design, Narrative, AI, and Audio Teams for insight into each aspect of the event. Let’s find out some of the tricks that brought you this Halloween treat. You’ll also get a glimpse at early Nightveil Hallow concept art from before Baalphazu could cast their first shadow over Aeternum.
NIGHTVEIL HALLOW INSPIRATION
“The direction of Nightveil Hallow was greatly inspired by 80’s horror movies, specifically the awesome creature-flicks and fun-spirited ‘schlocky’ tone of the era,“ said Holiday Event Feature Lead Deric Nunez. ”As a Halloween and horror-fanatic, it was a blast to work with the team to mix all the pieces that make 80’s horror so iconic and present them within the realm of Aeternum. Baalphazu and his Pumpkinites convey a theme that should hopefully feel familiar to fans of the genre and season, while Salvatore is a classic throwback to the golden age of horror cinema icons.”
EVENT GOALS
“The goal of every holiday event is to ensure it’s unmistakable to players that a special event is happening in Aeternum,” said Deric. “With that, the playfully decorated settlements composed by Douglas Guanlao, Brian Patenaude, and Rosie Stzralkowski round out Nightveil Hallow. It is the team’s seal on our love letter to the spookiest time of year!”
REFERENCES IN THE EVENT SHOP REWARDS
“The reverence Nightveil Hallow holds for the spooky season is most apparent in the Event Shop and incredible rewards players can earn during the event,” said Deric. “I’m certain fans of the genre will pick up on the inspirations for a few of the items, but there’s one hidden-in-plain-sight reference I’m particularly curious if anyone will catch.”
THE CREATION OF BAALPHAZU
“When conceiving the demon Baalphazu, we wanted to hint at the existence of other parallel worlds,” said Narrative Designer Aaron de Orive. “The Netherworld is a mysterious realm of shadows and nightmares, where the dark figure of Lord Tenebrous rules over the Host, a collection of goblins, ghouls, and other terrors. Baalphazu is one of the Netherworld’s dread captains, eager to carry out the will of his twisted master by spreading fear throughout the island of immortals.”
NAMING BAALPHAZU
“We tossed a few names around when conceiving this demon,” said Aaron. “When it comes to New World, our goal is to have creatures and NPCs that are familiar but still uniquely Aeternum. I was fond of the name ‘Belphegor’ while Deric Nunez favored ‘Pazuzu’ so it’s easy to see how we settled on Baalphazu.”
PUMPKINITES
“Any new holiday event starts with establishing the ‘reason for the season,’ or the major shift that causes all of the associated festivities,” said Deric. “The conceptualization of the Pumpkinites was that first step toward developing the overall framework of Nightveil Hallow.”

“The idea of monstrous pumpkin creatures running amok across Aeternum was too fun to pass on and the Concept/AI Teams did a killer job developing each one to convey their own sense of personality and purpose. Of the bunch, the Pumpklin is the one I’d consider to be the mascot of the event as it’s a direct homage to the “small creature” horror films of the 80’s. I can totally see this little guy standing claw-to-claw against the Critters.“
PUMPKLINS
“Despite being the smallest and most fodder creature of the bunch, the Pumpklins were a deceivingly intricate mob to create as they are vital to defeating Baalphazu,” said Deric. “The concept of defeating an enemy and picking up its head to throw at others was as wild to pitch as it was to develop. A lot of new tech had to be created and there were many moving parts. It was a cross-departmental effort.”

“Everyone involved with the process did such an amazing job, it’s immensely satisfying mowing them down by the dozens and seeing their heads fly across the battlefield. I’m incredibly excited the Pumpklin is now a permanent fixture of Aeternum, and can’t wait to see what other shenanigans it can get itself into.”
BAALPHAZU BOSS FIGHT
“Controlled chaos is how I’d best describe the primary creative design pillar of the fight,” said Deric. “It’s fast and hectic, but includes a large boss space to create a more epic atmosphere in two ways — many players can participate without feeling too crowded and Baalphazu and his Pumpkinites have a lot of room to move.”

“I love how his dialogue and taunts were worked so heavily into the flow of the fight to convey both narrative and phase transitions to players. If I had to pick one specific moment of the Baalphazu fight I’m particularly pleased with (aside from everything), the presentation and performance of his final death explosion completely nailed the goal of an 80’s cult horror villain death. It is a perfect celebratory moment to close out the encounter.”
BOSS DESIGN
“Baalphazu was designed to make sure any player can succeed without having to play a specific role or weapon,” said AI Designer Kevin Gu. “Accessibility is key for a spooky good time.”

“A lot of effort went into making sure the boss and his supporting cast worked harmoniously with each other. For example, the monster attacks apply healing debuffs, but offer healing when defeated.”

“Vital values were pushed to the absurd as we explored what an open world boss could look like in New World. This ‘more is better’ approach includes the bonus damage players can deal when Baalphazu becomes staggered. There’s something so satisfying about seeing big numbers!”

“I even secretly snuck in a small health buff before we locked down the boss for release, but watching the boss melt before the might of the players indicates that I should have applied ‘more is better’... more.”
APPEARANCE
“Since the Pumpkinites lean into the more ‘schlocky,’ playful side of 80’s horror, we created a darker and more sinister look for Baalphazu to add some levity to the event,” said Concept Artist Kiana Hamm. “He was meant to be a trickster figure with ties to mysterious ancient gods, so we drew a lot from folk horror. His hooded, partially obscured face bares a terrifying grin, leaning into that trickster archetype.”

“We went through tons of iterations for different looks and body types, but ultimately settled on his branch-like wings. Reminiscent of his pumpkin underlings, they give the impression of gnarled roots ripped out of the ground. For the rest of his design, we wanted him to look otherworldly — totally different than anything else we’ve seen in Aeternum so far. He looks almost as if he’s carved from clay, beautiful but disturbing at the same time. Ultimately his design captured exactly what we wanted for this event, dark and unsettling, with a hint of Halloween fun.”
THE NEW THROWABLE OBJECT MECHANIC
“What’s more appropriate for the season than throwing fiery pumpkin heads,” Deric said. “This mechanic creates an ebb and flow to the boss that allows players of a wide-range of skill and levels to participate in meaningful ways.”

“Developing the logistics of this mechanic and integrating it into the chaos of the fight presented an interesting challenge. We had to ensure the throwable pumpkins were visible and easily learnable. They also had to feel predictable in terms of trajectory and destination. It’s been immensely gratifying watching videos of PTR playthroughs and seeing the ‘aha’ moment when this mechanic clicks with players.”

“Beyond Nightveil Hallow, I’m excited about the future opportunity this mechanic has to enhance the variety and depth of players’ interactions with Aeternum.”
NIGHTVEIL HALLOW VOICE OVERS
Audio & VO Producer Johannes Rasinkangas shared the story behind the voices of Salvatore and Baalphazu:
THE VOICE OF SALVATORE
“Casting Baalphazu and Salvatore was rather unusual compared to how we typically handle that process,“ said Johannes. ”Starting with Salvatore, Aaron De Orive, and Deric Nunez had approached me with a special request. They wanted to have this voice pay homage to some of the great actors from the golden age of horror films like Vincent Price, Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff and Lon Chaney. This became a rather challenging request to find just the right voice.“

“After reviewing dozens of reels from voice actors, I was chatting with one of our wonderful directors. They shared a general joy and excitement for the character, suggested some folks, and then later that day sent me an email out of the blue. Attached was a recording of an excerpt from The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe.”

“The person reading it was exactly what we were looking for. Turns out that director had asked Christopher Corey Smith to quickly do a recording. I cannot exaggerate how perfect Chris sounded. With their permission, I passed this recording over to Aaron and Deric. Much to their delight, and the initial confusion of ‘yes, that’s a perfect voice. If only we could find an actor to do something similar,’ we had cast our Salvatore.”

“Aaron and I were sitting on pins and needles, nervous but excited during the first recording session. As soon as Chris slipped into that performance, the entire crew was grinning from ear to ear. A few of us couldn’t help but chime in during breaks and pauses to sing our praises about how he sounded just like one of those golden age actors. Chris was an absolute blast to work with.”
THE VOICE OF BAALPHAZU
“We knew from a design perspective that Baalphazu was going to be really intense and vocally very straining,” said Johannes. “So, I wanted to make sure whoever we cast for the role could handle screeches, screams, growls and more.”

“The voice behind Baalphazu is Molly Scarpine, an incredibly talented metal vocalist who just so happens to specialize in extreme creature vocals. Molly was recommended to me initially by our Director Maddie Stratton as a ‘hey, check out this vocalist and her band. They’re really cool.’ After hearing Molly’s music, I knew we had to get her in for something awesome. Then this boss came around, handed to me as a lovely gift. I pitched Molly to our Audio Team as a possible voice, and they were on board.”

“Molly was such a wonderful person to record with and gave us a plethora of variations for each line. I just have this vivid memory of Molly shrugging and calling out that she’s doing great after being asked how she’s feeling, and then going in for the next take. Easily one of the coolest sessions I’ve ever had the pleasure of attending.”
BAALPHAZUU VOICE DESIGN
Sound Designer Kyle Bailey walked us through his design process for Baalphazuu:

“Holiday content is always a lot of fun to work on, and I think Halloween might be my favorite,“ said Sound Designer Kyle Bailey. ”The dark and scary nature of the holiday opens up a huge amount of possibilities for sound design. You can push the envelope into weird and creative territories to enrich the experience.“

“Starting with great source material makes the remainder of the process an absolute joy. The unique vocal tonalities that Molly can achieve, in addition to the raw emotion that comes through in the recording, gave this character their own unique voice, even before the VO design.”

“We knew the voice needed to evoke terror, and strike fear into the hearts of all who inhabit the island. With that in mind, I started by splitting the voice into three separate channels for unique processing. The first layer was meant to provide clarity in the spoken line. I used very light pitch and delay processing to give it a bit of a larger than life feel, but was careful about going too far and making the lines unintelligible. This gave the voice an eerie, demonic doubling effect.”

“The next two layers were where I wanted to take advantage of the strange nature of Halloween and push it into something weird, horrifying, and unique. I was inspired by a sound we all know and hate, nails on a chalkboard. I found that you can get similar, but unique results from sliding a shower ring across a metal rod. I took these unsettling sounds and used an envelope follower, which mirrored the amplitude of the VO lines, to bring that texture into the voice.”

“The final layer was where I went nuts. I threw everything and the kitchen sink at it to see what would happen. The result ended up being a low-pitched layer with some aggressive modulation. I used a slight reversal effect along with a formant filter hooked up to an LFO to give a constant tonal shift that somewhat mimics a human voice. These three layers, along with the strong VO performance gave Baalphazu an identity of their own.”
BAALPHAZU SOUND EFFECTS (SFX)
“After working with Molly’s vocals, I had the opportunity to go into my own creative space and finish off the character’s sound scape with the SFX,” said Kyle.
VIOLIN
“I started with something familiar to me, the violin,” said Kyle. “The amount of emotion and expressivity you can communicate through the violin is something I haven’t experienced with anything else. But… it’s also capable of producing some of the nastiest, most unsettling screeches and scrapes to ever pierce your ears.“

“This was the starting point for Baalphazu’s base ability, the Wing Stab. The ability to control pitch and that nasty timbre allowed me to give the lead-up and execution of the attack the motion they needed. These recordings, along with the creaky, wooden branch foley for the wings and a splash of fire, gave this attack its voice.”
CHICKERING PIANO
“Continuing my experimentation with musical instruments, I reached for a 1920s Chickering piano as source material for the Reap ability,” said Kyle. “During this attack, the ground is lit with a green flame, then Baalphazu pulls their challengers in close and summons rings of fire that damage all who are near. The piano is used in the lead-up to the pull, giving the players a tell that something is on the horizon.”
SPOONS AND STRINGS
“I rubbed a spoon across the bare piano strings in all different directions and found that the upward direction gave a great sense of tension and anticipation,” said Kyle. “The metal spoon scraping against the metal of the piano strings provided that discomforting signature that worked so well for this character. The piano mixed with elements of fire, thunder, chains and the souls of the Neatherworld beneath, convey the sheer terror that Baalphazu encapsulates.”

“I had an amazing time working on all of the different aspects of Baalphazu. Each one introduced an opportunity to try something new, push the creative envelope, and come up with a unique sonic signature that fit with the character. The combination of deliberate casting, incredible performance, and the ability to explore new ideas created an environment for the team to flourish. These, along with a massive group effort from all the developers came together to create this great new experience.”

New & Returning Player Guide

Greetings, Adventurers!

Frequent updates and quality of life improvements continue to help New World evolve into an even more enjoyable experience. One year later, the game includes additional weapons, modes, storylines, Expeditions, areas, and features. There are also new systems, mechanics, and open world activities. If you can think of something from launch, chances are it was more recently changed based on player feedback. For returning players that might sound daunting, but this is actually the best time to play New World, especially if you’re new to the game.

We chatted with BDLG and Redbyrd, the creators of Newworldfans.com and the New World to Go podcast, to discuss everything new and returning players need to know after the Brimstone Sands Release.
NEW PLAYER TIPS
“Take it slow and don’t get overwhelmed,” BDLG said. ”You will learn as you go. It is 100% okay to not know anything when you start. That’s part of the fun. Enjoy the ride and the knowledge will come.“
REVAMPED STARTING EXPERIENCE
Before BDLG played New World, he most looked forward to exploring the world of Aeternum. Now those early settlements, points of interest, and quests are completely revamped. “It is an incredible experience for new players,” BDLG said.
GETTING STARTED
The first 25 levels of the game were overhauled based on player feedback. Here’s what to expect:

 • Start the adventure with friends: Players spawn in one of several zones at the beginning of the game. Head to a friend’s location to play early quests together.
 • Multiple ways for solo and group players to progress: There are different objectives for certain quests that give you the option to remain solo or join a group of players depending on your preferred experience.
 • Diverse objectives to keep gameplay fresh: Objectives range from puzzle and traversal challenges to unique interactions with the world and dynamic events. There’s always something new to find.
 • An epic adventure surrounding the mysteries of Aeternum: Conquer new enemies, obstacles, and locations to reveal the truth about the eternal isle.
TAKE YOUR TIME WITH PROGRESSION
“Getting to level 60, or max level, is not a huge time sink compared to many other games,” BDLG said. “It’s fairly easy to obtain so there’s not need to rush the process. The first time you embark on that journey is incredible. You only get one ‘first leveling experience,’ and the end-game will always be there.”
HOW TO BALANCE STORY PROGRESSION, SIDE QUESTS AND EXPLORATION
“New World does a great job of grouping the side quests with the main plot progression,” BDLG said. “You can pick up the main story and side quests in batches, and then complete a cycle and repeat in the next area. Quests also take you throughout many parts of the world which allows you to explore naturally as you progress.”
TRADE SKILLS
Trade Skills are non-combat related skills that fall into one of three categories: Crafting, Gathering, and Refining. Skills like Musical Instruments, Mining, and Cooking all have separate levels. These skills help you complete quests, gain experience, defeat enemies, and generate Coin through New World’s economy. There are over 15 Trade Skills, so pick up BLDG’s tips for easier progression:

 • Focus on leveling your Gathering and Refining as you level up your character. Refining skills have daily cooldown materials that are very valuable and can help you either make money or be stashed away for end-game Crafting.
 • Cooking is very easy to level. Make sure to level Cooking to help keep you stocked on food. It’s also very easy to obtain your Emerald Gypsum via Cooking once you reach that level of progression.
 • If you want to focus on Crafting, prioritize armor crafting over weapon crafting, because there’s quite a few good weapons that players can obtain through drops. As a new player, bear in mind that Crafting at a high level requires gear, food, town buffs, and trophies. Some of these can be difficult to obtain, but crafting legendary gear at the end-game can be very lucrative.
FACTIONS AND COMPANIES
Each of the game’s three Factions have their own unique style and beliefs. Membership comes with a few perks like the ability to flag yourself for PvP in the open world and join Companies. Companies are player-run organizations that may take control of Aeternum’s Settlements. Here’s how to navigate them:

 • New World can be completed without joining a Faction or Company, making both entirely optional.
 • If you are a solo player, your faction choice is not necessarily too important. Choose one you like based on their backstory, color, or whatever else catches your eye.
 • Choosing your Faction is more important if you play with friends. You must both be in the same Faction to join the same Company. Factions can also be changed, so no decision is binding.
 • You do not have to immediately join a Company. However, joining a good one as a new player can help speed up your progression and knowledge of the game.
 • Faction missions are valuable to complete each day, and BDLG treats them more as a daily task versus something he does regularly, unless they are trying to undermine a territory. Doing three Faction missions daily will reward you with increased experience and gold, which gives new players a nice boost.
COMBAT
“Combat has seen many different iterations of meta,” BDLG said. “That means things are always changing, which keeps the game fresh and enjoyable. For new players the combat is very easy to learn, but hard to master.”
WEAPONS
New World features 14 unique weapons. Charge more confidently into battle with these recommendations:

 • As a new player you need to be aware of each weapon’s preferred attributes. For example, the Great Axe scales off of Strength and the Bow scales off of Dexterity. This makes those two weapons a less than ideal pairing. Instead, focus on pairing weapons together that work well with similar attributes. It will cut down your possible options and help you gain an understanding of how the weapon pairings function.
 • Try as many different weapons and combinations as you can. You’ll feel less overwhelmed if you switch weapons as you continue to level and find more. You might even end up sticking with one you initially felt wasn’t for you.
 • Do not worry about maxing out each weapon’s level in the early stages of the game. Once your character reaches level 60, it’s not a huge undertaking to get your favorite weapons to level 20.
CONSUMABLES, PERKS, AND EQUIPMENT
Finding the best Perks or items early on isn’t necessary. Instead focus on understanding what everything does and how they all work. You will need that information once you reach the late game, especially if you want to acquire good gear. For now, beginners should know:

 • Your equip load or equipment weight is crucial to your gameplay. Make sure to hover over the tooltip to learn what the differences are between the different weights. You will see the text “light, medium, heavy” beside your equipped armor in your inventory screen. Learning how this works as soon as you begin will help you out tremendously.
 • Pay attention to the attribute scaling for each weapon, and make sure you distribute them correctly based on the ones you use. You can easily respec your attributes in the attribute screen if you switch weapons.
 • There are quite a few consumables that can increase your damage output and mitigation like Honing Stones, attribute food, coatings, and wards for PvE. You can familiarize yourself with these as you level, but don’t get overwhelmed by them. You will learn more about each one as you progress.
 • Voidbent armor is not best in slot. If you choose to craft or acquire Voidbent gear, understand that it should be utilized as a “stepping stone” armor and not what you should shoot for as a best in slot set.
HOW TO QUICKLY TRAVERSE THE MAP
While the start of the game is now more centralized, later quests require additional travel. BDLG shared a few tricks for you to spend less time running around Aeternum’s massive map:

 • Set your Inn early on. You can utilize your Inn from anywhere on the map and then fast travel to Shrines from there.
 • Run up to every fast travel Shrine you see. These are very important for getting around the map quickly.
 • Travel on the road when possible for a nice speed boost.
 • You can also fast travel from anywhere in the world to a house you own and then freely warp to any Shrine, Settlement, or Outpost. You can even reset the fast travel timer of your house by paying a small Azoth fee.
CAN SOLO PLAYERS FINISH NEW WORLD
“New World is a great game for solo players,” BDLG said. “You can bypass all of the group content in the main story quest which allows you to complete the entire storyline without having to find groups. There’s also plenty to do as a solo player, including PvP.”
PVP AND PVE CONTENT
“There are plenty of PvP options in the game,” BDLG said. ”You can flag up and fight opposing Factions in open world PvP, fight your friends in solo or group Duels, queue up for small scale PvP with Arenas, play objective based PvP through Outpost Rush, and enter large-scale battles through Wars. You can begin open world PvP very early on in your gameplay, and queue up for Arenas as early as level 20.“

“For PvE players, the game has quite a few different Expeditions you can run. Each of the Expeditions can be pushed past their normal versions through Mutated versions. The Mutated versions are much harder. They rotate each week, keeping the content fresh. There’s also plenty of open world PvE to be had with the Elite Zones and bosses.”
JOINING THE COMMUNITY
“For the most part, the New World community is very helpful and welcoming to new players,” BDLG said. “There are always ‘bad eggs’ in every game, so if you come across someone that’s negative or rude don’t let that be indicative of the community as a whole. I have seen many new players ask for help in global chat, and then receive that help via gold, gear, a question answered, etc. by many veteran players.”
RETURNING PLAYER TIPS
“Since launch, most of the changes to New World have improved the experience of new, returning, and even current players,“ Redbyrd said. ”If anything, it should be much easier to pick up New World now than it was at launch.“
SHOULD I MAKE A NEW CHARACTER OR CONTINUE MY PAST ADVENTURE
If you haven’t reached max level, Redbyrd recommends starting a new character. “The new starting experience is next level. Leveling is much easier now and starting over can help you re-learn the game, plus rolling up in the new Monarchs Bluff and then seeing the new Faction hubs will blow you away!”
HOW HAS PROGRESSION CHANGED
“New World has done a great job main-streaming progression and how you get to max Gear Score,” Redbyrd said. “The days of tracking your Gear Score on a piece of paper or spread sheet are gone. The newly improved Expertise system lets players know where they stand, while the new Gypsum System allows players to easily improve their Gear Score through the activities they enjoy.”
RETURNING AS A SOLO VERSUS GROUP PLAYER
“One of the best things returning players can do is to connect with current players,” Redbyrd said.

“Solo players now have a great new resource, the Expedition Group Finder. The Group Finder makes it easy to link up with other people to do Expeditions and Mutations.“

“People who prefer to play in groups should join a Company. Joining a Company isn’t required but can vastly improve your experience. Being able to ask other veteran players questions can be a huge asset as you get re-accustomed to the game.“
GEAR PROGRESSION AND RETURNING TO PVP MODES
“Players interested in PvP should look into the new PvP Reward Track,” Redbyrd said. “This is an easy way to catch up with other players and obtain some high quality PvP gear. Players can also look in the Auction House for cheap PvP gear.”

“There have been a lot of changes to gear since launch. It should be much easier now for players to get the gear they are looking for with the improvement to both drops and Crafting. To be competitive, players will need to increase their Expertise levels to 600 and above. This is also much easier now with the improvements to drops and the Gypsum system.”

Following the Brimstone Sands Release, if you have an item below 600 Gear Score when you enter Outpost Rush or PvP Arenas, its score will increase to 600 for the duration of the match. Other modes like War and open world PvP will still use your current Gear Score.
FAVORITE CHANGES TO NEW WORLD
Redbyrd wrapped up our discussion with a brief rundown of his favorite changes:
UPDATE
“The Brimstone Sands zone is great, with tons for players to explore. Combine that with a lot of new changes like Heartgem Abilities and it is the best New World update by far.”
SPECIFIC CHANGE
“The quality of life update to both fast travel and inventory management. Those changes reduced a lot of the player friction and made the game more fun to play.”
EXPEDITION
“The new Ennead Expedition is my favorite. Each boss has interesting mechanics and the time it takes to complete hits the sweet spot.”

Brimstone Sands Release

Greetings, Adventurers!

New World's Brimstone Sands Release downtime will begin for all regions at 3AM PT (10AM UTC) on October 18. Expected downtime is 4 hours. Discover a new zone, Expedition, revamped starting experience, weapon, seasonal event, and combat mechanic. Check out our full breakdown of the release notes for more information on all things Brimstone Sands. Here’s a brief overview for you to learn more about some of the key additions.
BRIMSTONE SANDS ZONE
Brimstone Sands is a new zone unlike anything else in Aeternum. Roughly the size of 2.5 Everfalls, it features new enemies to fight, a new territory to control, and new stories to uncover.

Death hovers over the scorched wastes of Brimstone Sands, its thirst still unsatisfied even after centuries of strife and war. The ancient Egyptians first encountered the godlike Ancients here and built monuments and vast cities that were part of a flourishing civilization thousands of years in the past. Their civilization has long fallen to ruin, and few of those original inhabitants remain except for the mysterious sorcerer Imhotep, with whom players must work with to solve the desert’s mysteries.

The most immediate threat in Brimstone Sands is posed by the deranged remnants of the Roman Empire's 19th Legion. What exactly befell the Romans must be discovered, but they have fallen to Corruption and now besiege the ancient ruins of a mysterious Pyramid known as Akhet. They are certain that, within, they will find the secret to their redemption and the long-awaited resurgence of the Roman Empire.
THE ENNEAD EXPEDITION
Delve into Ancient Ruins to face the vigilant Anubian Guardians and solve hieroglyphic puzzles to achieve new power.

Players will explore ancient mysteries with Imhotep, battle powerful Sand Demons, and perhaps, if they persist, restore the rightful ruler who can finally bring order and hope to the region after centuries of chaos.
REVAMPED STARTING EXPERIENCE
We’ve completely redesigned the early levels of New World, so players who start the game or roll a new character will experience brand new stories and quests. We listened to player feedback about the starting experience in New World, and made the following changes:
OPTIMIZED QUEST FLOW
• Quest flow through zones has been optimized, with NPCs who move around with a story that takes players through each region of the game, unlocking side content to pace out the experience.
NEW QUEST DYNAMICS
• We’ve added a variety of new quest dynamics, from wave events to tracking and traversal challenges, puzzles in the ruins, unique interactions with the world, and dynamic events players will encounter.
STREAMLINED STORY
• We’ve revised onboarding to stay focused on the central storyline, introducing the legacy of King Arthur in Monarch’s Bluffs and a curse and famine from the sorceress Medea in Windsward. Players will still converge on the Hermit Yonas to start on the path to becoming Soulwardens, but the Yonas quests have all been consolidated in Everfall. The Hermit himself is now more mobile, while the story and quest flow vastly improved.
ZONE UPGRADES
• We’ve also added a lot more character to the zones and settlements in Monarch’s Bluffs and Everfall, with new enemies, new major locations, and new challenges in the quests and open world.

Aid Salvatore the Mad in his quest to banish these foul terrors and collect a bounty of limited-time Nightveil Hallow rewards. This event will run from the launch of Brimstone Sands until November 1. Characters must be level 35 or higher to start the questline.
GREATSWORD WEAPON
Get ready for a new weapon — the Greatsword. This blade utilizes offensive and defensive stances to adapt to different situations. Learn the risks and rewards of each option to survive in battle.

Both Weapon Skill Trees feature versatile tactics for varied playstyles:
 • The Onslaught tree embodies relentless offense and focuses on defeating enemies before they can take you out.
 • The Defiance tree excels at aggressive defense that can survive and deal damage against multiple opponents.

The Greatsword scales evenly with Strength and Dexterity, making it a good pair for many other martial weapons.
HEARTGEM ABILITIES
Adventurers can now further customize their playstyle through Heartgem Abilities:
 • Detonate: Overload yourself with Arcane energy to detonate and deal significant damage in a large radius around you. Players can move and attack while the ability is active.
 • Grasping Vines: Punch your hand into the ground to unleash vines around you and root all nearby enemies.
 • Stoneform: Turn yourself to stone and become immune to staggers, knockdowns, stuns, roots and slows. Players can move and attack while this ability is active.
 • Cannon Blast: Whip out a large, handheld cannon and fire a cannonball that deals significant damage on impact.
 • Dark Ascent: Sprout Corrupted wings and fly up into the air, hover briefly, and then slam back down into the ground, staggering and dealing damage to all nearby enemies.

Charge Heartgems through combat actions like dealing and taking damage, blocking hits, and healing allies. Once fully charged, players can trigger an ability. The charge resets upon use. Experiment with and upgrade each Heartgem to find a favorite.

Tips From Aeternum: New World Greatsword Guide

Greetings, Adventurers!

Tips From Aeternum features expert insight from your favorite New World content creators. We’re joined by Twitch streamers Baggins and Danneh for some tips on the Greatsword. This powerful, two-handed blade offers a highly customizable playstyle through unique stances. Explore its playstyle, builds, and gameplay to more effectively slash your way across the eternal isle.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Danneh recalled his first time wielding the Greatsword at a Brimstone Sands preview event. “I had a duel with a friend and basically one-shot him as he was in his DPS light build, boom,” Danneh said. “It has some fantastic animations and really makes you feel like a badass.”

He went on to describe the Greatsword as an in your face weapon worth trying even if the stances do not appeal to you. “The great thing about New World is that your character can use any weapon, at any time,” Danneh said. “Okay, you might not have the perfect build or stats, but it really is fun. Usually you find people really enjoying weapons that they never thought they would.”
GREATSWORD BUILDS
Weapon gems, perks, and attributes are often the difference between a successful Elite Chest Run and a trip back to the nearest Shine. Baggins shared a few of his favorite tips to help you survive.
GREATSWORD ATTRIBUTES
“Because the Greatsword scales equally with Strength and Dexterity, it pairs excellently with any one-handed, two-handed, or ranged weapon in New World,” Baggins said. “A general rule of thumb I would give is to focus more on Strength when pairing with a melee weapon, and Dexterity when pairing with a ranged weapon. Exceptions to this include the Rapier and Blunderbuss, which follow the reverse rule.”
GREATSWORD PERK RECOMMENDATION
“Energizing Calamity Counter or Leeching Crosscut are excellent perks to obtain as they will increase your survivability in a major way, providing either a big boost to stamina or health respectively,” Baggins said. “If you're more of a PvP Orientated player, Calamity Counter will likely be more beneficial for you, whereas more PvE orientated players will find Leeching Crosscut a great option to keep their health topped off while fighting.”
GREATSWORD GEM TIP
“Because the Greatsword has such excellent stamina management and regeneration passives, consider trying a Jasper Gem in place of the usual Opal that is common in many other weapon builds," Baggins said. "You may find the criteria of simply taking damage (Jasper) easier than keeping your stamina bar low (Opal)."
PLAYSTYLE
According to the Design Team, proficient Greatsword players will constantly switch stances depending on the situation — tanking enemy damage via the defensive stance when targeted, and letting loose through the offensive stance when their aggro is gone. However, using the wrong stance at the wrong time means either dealing less damage or losing large chunks of health.

Stances last a limited amount of time and can typically only be entered with skills, meaning that there is an opportunity cost to switching. The most successful players will time their positions, strategies, and attacks based on when their current stance will end.
GREATSWORD TANKS
For Danneh, versatility is one of the Greatsword’s most distinct traits, allowing for very diverse builds and playstyles. Many of the current weapons compliment it well, but if he had to choose one, he’d pick the Sword and Shield.

“The Sword and Shield is something I personally enjoy playing and it's the main tank weapon combo,” Danneh said. “Tanks have had it pretty tough for a while. Now, thanks to the Greatsword there's a solid option for more than just survivability. I think we’ll see some pretty defensive builds with a little bit of burst damage to make things more interesting.”
ATTACK CHAIN TIP
Every Greatsword light or heavy attack does large area of effect slashing damage except the first heavy attack, which has a smaller hitbox,“ Baggins said. ”Because of this I recommend starting your attack chain combo with a light attack, followed by two heavy attacks. Repeat when fighting large groups of enemies.“
BLOCKING TIP
“If you're using the Defiance Side of the Greatsword Skill Tree, make sure to block,” Baggins said. “The Faultless Defender and Arrow Deflection passives reward blocking. The Greatsword also has the highest block stability of any weapon other than the Shield, making it one of the better weapons to pair with Heavy Armor."
PRACTICE AND ASK FOR HELP
“Don’t be afraid to ask other players if they have any advice for your particular build or the content you are playing,” Danneh said. “Most people are really friendly. On top of that, of course, practice and training. If you have a few bad moments with it, don’t give up. Keep using it and you’ll get better and better!”
