Fall Guys review - it's bean fun

When you were conceived, millions of sperm struggled desperately to be first to the egg. Jostling and scrambling for a chance at fertilisation, they fought past a series of obstacles adapted to thin the herd. Millions became hundreds, became tens, became one, became you. A jelly bean with boneless limbs and two beady eyes, rolling down a sticky yellow vinyl ramp.

The premise of Fall Guys isn't too far from the battle royale game modus operandi - a lobby of hopeful legumes fall one by one until a victor is crowned. But rather than fighting for your life in the war-torn battlefields of PUBG or Apex Legends, you toddle precariously through a series of candy-coated mini-games, butting heads and making grabby hands at anything standing in your way.

Each match - or 'show' (think '90s children's game show; the kind featuring the omnipresent threat of 'gunge') features a maximum of five rounds of chaotic fun, randomly chosen from 25 potential mini-games. Games roughly fit into four categories - race, survival, team, and the unique final game designed to end the contest.

Fall Guys sold two million copies on Steam in one week

Fall Guys has enjoyed a storming start to life on Steam. The jolly bumble royale has already sold an impressive two million copies on Steam alone. Publisher Devolver Digital shared the information on Twitter (below) alongside some other fun stats that highlight the multiplayer game's quick ascent to the top.

The new PC game has been watched for over 23 million hours on Twitch, and has seen 60 million "fallen fall guys". The first week of play for the game also saw 1.5 million crowns grabbed to obtain victory. While I did plenty of falling, I certainly did not do much crown grabbing.

Since Fall Guys came out last week, it's also managed to hit over 120k in concurrent players. To put that into perspective, that's better than Horizon Zero Dawn, Doom Eternal, and Sea of Thieves did when they came to Steam. Such was the success of the quirky battle royale game that it also bumped into oodles of server issues. That's to be expected, to be fair. While Fall Guys developer Mediatonic would have hoped for success, it's unlikely it would have anticipated this kind of popularity.

Fall Guys - Thank You!

BEANS! It has almost been a week since we unleashed Fall Guys upon the world!

Thank you so much for supporting the game and being patient while we figured out our server issues. It was a little bumpy for the first few days, but we had it running smoothly over the weekend!

As an apology to you all, and a thank you for bearing with us, we’d like to give you an in-game reward. We’re still working out what this will be exactly, and the technical side of gifting it to you all, but we’ll have more details on that soon.

We’re absolutely delighted by the community’s response to Fall Guys ever since we crashed headfirst onto Steam! We are beyond excited that you all were able to finally get your hands on what we spent two years creating!

Of course, this wouldn’t be a Fall Guys party without deeply fashionable swag and we’ve got all sorts on offer for you lovely early adopters. First up, all players during the first week of release will receive their very own BIG BAD WOLF costume. Which, contrary to the name, is actually really good. Look:

There’s only one day left to purchase the game to snag it!

But what if you got all stumbly in the Fall Guys beta? We see you - for your contribution to the war against physics, if you played at least one game during the beta you will be rewarded with this Crash Test Dummy skin! Keep an eye out, we will be dishing these out to eligible players a few days after you jump back into Fall Guys.

For those of you who got the early dubs in, we had something pretty special. A Steam exclusive Alyx from HalfLife skin was yours if you cashed in some of your delicious victory crowns.

That’s since been replaced with an awesome collab from our friends at Hotline Miami… Jacket:

If you didn’t get a chance to rack up the wins in time, these will be on rotation and appear in the store again, sometime in the future, so don’t fret!

The store is about to change again… and… for a little spoiler… the next costume is a Ninja!

Looking to the future, we’ve already got loads and loads of ridiculous content and updates lined-up to keep your Fall Guys experience fresh and fashionable. There will be fiendishly fun new levels, stylish and silly new costumes, and completely new features coming soon as we continue to evolve the Fall Guys experience and take in feedback from our incredible community.

But most importantly, if you’ve been getting involved in the Fall Guys beta hilarity for yourself, chucking memes at us on Twitter or simply taking the time to kick back and laugh at all the uncoordinated silliness unfolding on Twitch, we want to say thank you. Jump in on Steam and we hope you have the absolute best time.

Speaking of Twitter, some of our tweets have really been ‘popping off’ as the trendy beans call it. Take a look for yourself here: Twitter

Fall Guys has more players than Horizon Zero Dawn, Doom Eternal, and Sea of Thieves

After a hugely successful beta, party game battle royale Fall Guys has had an even better launch. The multi-coloured multiplayer game has had peak concurrent players higher than several recent triple-A hits in its first week.

Pointed out by video games industry analyst Benji-Sales, Fall Guys' concurrent players record on Steam is 124,772, which is more than Doom Eternal, Sea of Thieves, Resident Evil 3, and Horizon Zero Dawn. Not bad for a game developed, as Sales points out, by a team that only had 30 employees at its biggest. It should be noted, too, that these are just Steam numbers, not including the PlayStation 4 players, where Fall Guys launched as part of this month's free games on PlayStation Plus. So, yeah, lot of people doing a lot of falling down this week.

That being said, maintaining this kind of mammoth launch hasn't been without its trials. Fall Guys servers have been intermittently struggling, leading to them going down entirely, as players flood the platform game. Everything's back to normal at time of writing, but do bear with developer Mediatonic and publisher Devolver Digital in the meantime.

Fall Guys is down

Fall Guys is down

You can't play Fall Guys right now, because there are too many Fall Guys. Seriously. Fall Guys, the game, is impossible to play at the moment because too many Fall Guys (i.e. you) are trying to connect. Developer Mediatonic says it's working on getting things ready for its first weekend as a live game.

If you hop into Fall Guys right now, you'll be able to pop around the menus, but trying to get into a game will immediately prompt a 'connection error' message, which will bump you back to the main menu when you click OK. In the past, you could still queue up for games during high traffic periods, but it could take a long time before you actually connected to one. Now, Fall Guys is just bumping you out while it gets things fixed up.

Mediatonic has been keeping players up to date with a separate technical support Twitter account called the Fall Guys Server Owl. According to this owl (obviously it's an owl, look at the profile picture), the team has gotten a lot of requests for a game update. "We're still working super hard on getting things all prepped for the weekend," it says. "Thank you so much for your patience, we know this isn't fun!"
