Update 24 Arrives! Midnight Tactics

Hi everyone,
In this update we made several improvements for different aspects of the game. See below the details.

Version 0.81.07

ADDITIONS
  • Sort inventory button added.
  • Investigate Cautiosly skill check added for certain overworld incidents and quests with battlemaps. Successful "investigate cautiously" skill checks reveal the number and type of enemies. It also grants a suprise attack bonus to the hero (+10 melee & ranged attack for 10 turns). Hero can make a more informed decision about committing to the battle. This skill check is easier at night.
  • Sword in the Stone overworld incident added. Hero must persuade the ethereal defender of the sword that he is brave and worthy enough to wield it.
  • Forbidden Ritual overworld incident added. Hero discovers an otherworldly statue worshipped by the cultist. He has now the opportunity to fight the cultists and steal the valuable gems on the statue.
  • Crystal Field overworld incident added. Hero finds a strange place full of crystal formations.
  • Rabbit added as a huntable animal. Hero can find it randomly on the overworld map or at the camp while searching for hunt.
  • Ceremonial Staff added. (Damage 12. Defense 5.)
  • Aquathril Shortbow added. (Damage 9)


CHANGES
  • Changed one of the wilderness survival perks to "No travel speed penalty when it is raining".
  • “Follow the tracks” skill check is improved. Now, on success, hero can find 1, 2 or 3 huntable animals.
  • Some of the thievery skill perks now improve suprise attack.
  • Successfull skill checks give more XP.
  • Successfull intimidation skill checks give more reputation.
  • Maximum load capacity is increased by 5 for all characters.
  • Amulets may now have luck stat.
  • Introductionary texts for overworld incidents improved.
  • The last boss is now harder.
  • Enemies after level 12 are slightly harder.
FIXES
  • Enemies' lightning damage was not calculated correctly when raining. It was less than it should be.
  • Fixed an issue where game starts to play wilderness ambient music for a second when exiting from the town battlemap to the town.
  • Deers were not supposed to attack, but they were melee attacking the hero.

Version 0.80.24

Here is a bugfix update.
  • Fixed an issue regarding the Abandon Quest button.
  • Fixed an issue where hero accepted bandit demands and gave up the escort/delivery missions.

Development News: Hunting with Consequences

Hi everyone,
This week we continued working on “investigate cautiously” skill check which is made with “thievery skill”. Now all suitable overworld battlemaps have this option. Hero can check the enemies at battlemaps before the battle. As explained last week, he may have the opportunity to make a surprise attack. At nights, this skill check will be somewhat easier, because the hero can hide in darkness and investigate from the safety of shadows.

Another improvement is made regarding hunting incidents. When hero finds the tracks of a deer, either at the camp or as an overworld incident, he had the option to follow the tracks. We realized this option was not working as intented. It always found two deers no matter what, although it should have been a Wilderness Survival skill check. But this will be corrected and improved with the next update. Based on the hero’s success at the skill check, he will be able to find more or less deers. If he rolls a critical success, he will find three instead of two deers. Critical failure will also be a thing and it will spawn a forest enemy like snakes or giant centipedes. We will test and fine tune this feature.

“Follow the tracks” skill check will be affected by rain. On a rainy day, the tracks will be obscured, so it will be much harder to track the animal. But experience points will be more.



We added a new animal for hunting: rabbit. Since the game has rabbit legs and rabbit steak for cooking, this was a needed addition. Rabbits will have low health but high defense because of their small size. Like deers, rabbits will be trackable too.

Improvements on the flavor texts also continue. Here is another example:

Old text: “You found giant beehives. Do you want to investigate?”
New text: “You found giant beehives standing like guardians of the wild. The thunderous hum of countless bees resonates through the foliage. What bold move shall you make in the face of this natural wonder?”

Version 0.80.23

Here is a bugfix update.
  • When cooking food, if the necessary raw ingredients are on another inventory page, the game may calculate the food weight incorrectly, resulting in excessive weight in the inventory.

Development News: Luminous Glow of Blazing Mushrooms

Hi everyone,
As we mentioned briefly last week, we were working on a new kind of skill check called “Investigate cautiously”. We iterated on that and came up with a solution that we can integrate it to the existing incidents. There are lots of incidents like “Collapsed Golem” or “Ancient Battlefield” that our hero has only 2 options to interact with: investigate or leave. “Investigate” sends our hero to battlemap and “Leave” exits the incident. Now our hero will have the opportunity to “Investigate cautiously” and extract some intel about the battle before he commits to it.

Now these incidents will have 3 options:
“Draw your weapon and proceed!” – sends hero to the battlemap.
“Investigate cautiously (Thievery 55%)” – checks for information about the enemies.
“Leave” – exits incident.

“Investigate cautiously” skill check will use thievery skill. If successful, hero will learn the type and number of enemies. He will also have an opportunity of a surprise attack. Surprise attack will give +10 to all attacks for 5 turns at the start of the battle.

If skill check is unsuccessful, it will mean that the hero made too much noise and enemies became aware of his presence. They won’t call for back up but they will attack and hero will have no choice but to fight.
If hero fails critically (meaning rolling 1-5 on a 100) enemies will not only attack but also call for back up.

Another improvement is about flavor texts of these incidents. Or maybe we should say lack of flavor texts. They were usually very bland. We improved them too. Check below one example:

Old one: “You found the ruins of an old castle. Do you want to investigate?”
New one: “As you wander the untamed wilderness, you stumbled upon the remnants of a once majestic castle, now reduced to a haunting shell of its former glory.”



Here is another example:
Old one: “You have come to a place full of mushrooms. Do you want to investigate?”
New one: "You came to a wondrous place where the luminous glow of blazing mushrooms illuminates the path before you."
