0.9.3_7412 🌽 Better Item Drops & Resource Collecting Update

Meowllo~

Did you miss me?? We’ve been a bit busy, but here it is! The first part of making the game feel better by gutting all the old systems that just didn’t scale up to keep up with Snacko’s size is here: item drops!

Obelisk, MIAOs, crafting...item collection is actually very central to Snacko’s gameplay loop, and we felt like it deserved a clear coat of polish to live up to the rest of the game’s newer features and level of thought put into it.

Nothing felt more frustrating than clearing all the rocks to get 2 measly Citrine Shards.

We outgrew the old way of handling resources and drops quickly, but recursive has gone through the diligent work of converting every single way items spawn into the world into the new system. It was a lot of work, let alone the work that went into creating the new drops and the backend tools to set it up.
Let’s all clap for recursive! Thank you!
🌽 Item Drops

Okay, so, the above screen snips make you feel like you’re an investment banker or something, right? At least, that’s how I feel using it.

This let’s us control a couple of aspects:
 • Which items drop at what % probabilities
 • And when it does spawn, what is the % chance it drops X amount?
 • And are there any conditions that can affect these drop rates?

For example, Aquamarine Shards will now spawn a bit more frequently if you try to hunt for them in the Mushroom Forest on rainy days. Lapis Shards will be more common when you venture into the Desert Canyon after dark.

You also have a very rare chance of getting three shards in one rock!

This gives us more creativity to keep the resource gathering experience feeling rewarding and dynamic, while giving us better control over balancing for grinding in early game versus late game.

One example of this are the changes to Citrine and Emerald Shards. To help players get from the end of Grassy Plains to Desert Canyon, where the game first forces you to upgrade your tool, the spawn rate for Citrine and Emerald Shards are higher in the Spring.

This way, just by naturally playing and bonking the rocks in the farm, town, or Plains, players should have more than enough Citrine Shards to get into the Desert Canyon. Higher drop rates on the Citrine Shards means we can allow players to get that +1 Pickaxe and Axe easily without ruining the balance of giving the player too many gems, as Citrine effects are generally more geared towards the early game where money is still a tight resource.

Outside of just resource nodes, this means we were also able to add non-fish items to the fishing pool. On top of fish spawns should reflect their % chance better, you now also have a % chance of nabbing yourself a useful item while fishing in the Mines. You might get some garbage items, like a Boot, but you also have a shot at some handy materials, like a Fastener.

Another part of the new item drop system meant we could modernize the farm tiles: the harvest animation has been sped up, and items now pop out. You also have a chance to get other items, like Plant Material.

Harvesting large plots of farms should now feel much faster and fluid.

As always, with these new balance changes, we’ll be keeping an eye out on everyone’s progress and feedback and adjust accordingly when something is over or undertuned!

✨ Misc.
 • Added mirror to Mikan’s house so players can change their appearance early game
 • Item drops in the mines no longer go through the walls and out of the mines
 • Traditional Desk now allows you to place items on top
 • Spinach can now be placed
 • Farm tile rocks, etc. now share the same drops as the ones in the farm outside the tiles, making it consistent
 • Fixed issue with gamepad routing in the shop screen
 • The wiki has had its data reimported to better match up with the new items and changed recipes

This patch had a ton of hidden work to bring our old systems out of technical debt and setting ourselves up for being to create more engaging systems to work around our planned quest and NPC improvements.

We hope that even though on the surface, item drop %s are not the most exciting, you’ll feel a positive difference in your gameplay.

Thank you very much for reading~
We’re always around in Discord. If you have any thoughts on the new drop rates, please let us know!
More updates are coming! See you very soon ( ・ω・)ノ゙
0.9.3_6341 🖥️ Hotfix: Dropping inputs in windowed

Meowllo! Wee hotfix to fix a frustrating issue present in both demo and full game!
Inputs should no longer randomly drop when playing in windowed or fullscreen windowed mode.
If this continues to happen to you, please let us know ASAP~

We're working on some system changes on how drops are handled and set up. We think it'll be a great quality of life improvement for balancing, and it'll make it easier for the two of us to add new content in the future.

"Why are the farm drops different?"
"The mine drops should get better as I go deeper..."
Stuff like that should be a thing of the past once this is completed.

We know it's taking a bit for us to get into the core of NPC polish, but we'll get there!!
Thank you very much for reporting issues, chatting, and sharing your screenshots with us.

Since this patch note was very uneventful, here is a treehouse by Luna.
Thank you very much 🙇

0.9.3_7307 🌙 Night time lighting strength, new path, and floating vines!

Meowllo~ This patch just has some smol fixes plus some new items I made...just for you đź’Ś
🌟 Night Time Strength
• Slider to pick how dark it gets at night
 • Mines now has the same lighting from morning until evening (you know, since it's..."indoors"...)
 • This should help as well if you like to use the Darker world theme
🌱 Floating Vines & Wooden Slats Path
• New Wooden Slats: same height as the player house wall and the wall panels. Stackable and dyeable!
 • New Wooden Slats Paths: can offset by a quarter to close the gap. Dyeable!
 • New Floating Vine & Floating Vine - Half: just some floating leaves to give your wall panels or outdoors some extra ✨nature✨. These vines won't collide with you and impede your movement. Plus, they stack!
✨ Misc.
• Quest tasks for inviting NPCs now show the actual building name needed, instead of "Place house"
 • Forcing auto-save after successfully receiving a SNACK PACK in case of reset and losing the item
 • Better clarity on building grid for winter time
 • Player character's sprite now more grounded... It used to visually come off the ground a bit!

Coming up, we're going to do some internal work on QoL and start on our next big update, so we'll be focusing less on anything that's not a major bug hotfix until then. See you soon~

0.9.3_7294 🖌️ Placeable, Dyeable Cubes, Quarter Tile Snapping, & More

📦 Buildables Cubed

We've added these boxes you can place. They have surface areas on top, and you can dye the caps and sides separately. To make your life easier, we've also added quarter tile snapping, which means you can now place the wall panels in a more useful manner without needing to free place.

The grid has been changed to help convey this change.

The boxes should help eat away your growing Limestone collection. The crafting recipes can be bought at the Carpenter's under "Consumables". It'll appear in the same place as the wall panels.

Speaking of the wall panels, the collision has been changed so you can place them closer along the wall or other blocks without it telling you it can't be placed!

To go with these new additions, we've switched around how the housing expansions feel to give it more of a progression curve. The West Wing, because it doesn't eventually lead to the upstairs or basement, is now the cheapest expansion, requiring much less materials in exchange for some Cocoa Beans.

All expansions now have a Cocoa Bean price tag included in exchange for reducing the number of materials needed.
The changes for the expansion costs are as follows:
West Wing
 • wood framing 40 removed
 • drywall 20 → 10
 • nails 35 → 10
 • fastener 20 removed
 • glue 10 → 5
 • glass 10 removed
 • added → cocoa beans 35,000
East Wing

 • drywall panel 30 → 20
 • nails 30 → 20

✨ Misc.
 • Something Fishy - caught fish will now immediately count toward quest progress
 • New Game - Fixed bug where loading a game, quitting out, and starting a new game would retain barns/player house upgrades in a different save file
 • Builder Kit - Fixed an issue where placing fences would prevent the player from dyeing objects until they re-entered the map
 • Builder Kit - Fixed an issue where objects snapping to a flat surface weren't being placed exactly flat
 • Softwood Table - Surface slightly smaller, making it easier to place chairs, etc. closer to it without snapping onto the surface
 • You can now have more than one page of notes in your Planner
Also, thank you very much for the 200+ reviews! We are getting closer to 500~
Very excited to see what the builders in the community will do with these cubes đź‘€
